The read
The Knicks and Sixers open NBA Cup group play tonight in Philadelphia, and the 4-1 Sixers are home underdogs to a 2-3 Knicks team they already beat in New York. That price only makes sense if Philly is short-handed, and I don't think it will be.
Philly won that first meeting 106-100 and has outscored opponents by 17 over five games, while New York is +1. When Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid all start, the Sixers are 3-0, winning by 6, 8 and 5. Jaylen Brown is questionable with a sore left knee, and Caldwell-Pope would start if he sits. That alone doesn't turn Philly into a home dog. The market is betting that a star sits on the front end of this back-to-back.
Last weekend, Embiid played the first night (28 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists against Milwaukee) and sat the second, while James sat the first. Tonight is the home game, and it counts in the Cup standings. Tomorrow is in Charlotte. If anyone rests, Charlotte is the obvious spot, and neither star is on the injury report.
The matchup favors Philly too. The Knicks have 80 turnovers in five games, and the Sixers have scored at least 20 points off turnovers every night. That decided the first meeting: 22 points off turnovers and 24 on the fast break. Maxey has scored between 26 and 32 every game. New York is playing its third game in four nights, and Mikal Bridges is 10-for-37 from the field, with just 13 minutes as a starter on Wednesday.
The risk is the glass. The Knicks average 14.6 offensive rebounds and won second-chance points 28-7 in the meeting. Philly's frontcourt is thin, with Jabari Walker, Dominick Barlow, Tacko Fall and Ariel Hukporti out. Without Embiid against Detroit, the Sixers gave up 15 offensive boards and lost by 13 without ever leading. They also keep digging holes: they trailed Cleveland by 29 and Indiana by 13 after three quarters.
This is an Embiid bet. If he's active, take the Sixers and the points. If he sits, I'd flip to the Knicks.

The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
NYK won last season's series 6-2
6-2New York won last season's series 6-2 and did it by 15.1 a game across 8 meetings, a solid sample for a head-to-head. Tonight is the first meeting this season. Eight games of one-sided results carries some weight, but it reflects last season's rosters and form, so check how both teams look now before leaning on it.
REPLACEMENT
Dominick Barlow is OUT for PHI
OUTDominick Barlow is out for Philadelphia with a low back stress reaction, and earlier reporting had him missing at least two weeks. This is an ongoing absence, so his minutes are likely already spread around in recent games.
Jabari Walker is OUT for PHI
OUTJabari Walker is out for Philadelphia with left patellar tendinopathy. It is a frontcourt depth loss and unlikely to change the line.
Jose Alvarado is OUT for NYK
OUTJose Alvarado is out for New York with a left ankle sprain. The Knicks lose a backup guard tonight at Philadelphia.
Tacko Fall is OUT for PHI
OUTTacko Fall is out for Philadelphia with a left quadriceps strain. It is a depth loss at center and unlikely to move the line.
Ariel Hukporti is OUT for PHI
OUTAriel Hukporti is out for Philadelphia with a torn right Achilles. He will miss a long stretch, so the market already treats him as gone.
Jaylen Brown is Questionable for PHI
QuestionableBrown is questionable with left knee soreness, and he has carried that tag since yesterday. Both teams are on equal rest, so his status is the main variable for Philadelphia tonight. Check it before tipoff.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothBoth teams are on two days of rest, so neither has a schedule edge. Brown's knee is the main variable for this game.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKTYRESE MAXEYPOINTS OVER 23.5
Maxey is the one Sixer who plays both nights of every back-to-back, and he plays big minutes in them. His lowest scoring night this season is 26. He put up 28 on this Knicks team in the opener, getting to the line nine times while Mikal Bridges and the rest of the New York wings chased him around screens for 40 minutes.
Tonight sets up for even more volume. Jaylen Brown is a game-time decision with a sore knee. Philadelphia is also starting a back-to-back, and the plan for Embiid and LeBron has been to rest at least one of them across the two nights. Whatever Nurse decides, the shots that leave with Brown, Embiid or James go to Maxey first. When the Sixers were short last weekend, he scored 26 and 29 with LeBron and then Embiid out.
The Knicks are on their third game in four nights and gave up 127 in Chicago on Wednesday. Their point of attack defense has been loose. Maxey's free throw volume gives him a floor even on a cold shooting night, and the number sits a few points under what he has been producing. I'll take the over at a fair price.
- GARY'S PICKKARL-ANTHONY TOWNSREBOUNDS OVER 11.5
Towns has turned into a glass eater under Mike Brown. He grabbed 20 against Detroit and 13 in Chicago, and Brown publicly praised the shift in his mindset. In the opener against Philadelphia, he pulled down 12 in only 24 minutes with Embiid on the floor, and the Knicks crushed the Sixers on the offensive glass that night.
Philadelphia's frontcourt is a mess. Hukporti is gone for the year, and Walker, Barlow and Fall are all out. Nurse has been reduced to Adem Bona or small ball with Dean Wade and LeBron at the five. The Sixers just let Milwaukee grab 62 rebounds and Detroit 54. If Embiid or James sits either night of this back-to-back, the paint gets even thinner.
Fouls are the risk. He has picked up five in three of his games and Drummond is behind him. But Towns has played 28 minutes or more in every game since the opener, and his rate per minute clears this line comfortably. I'll pay the juice on the over.
