The read
Friday night at Target Center, and this NBA Cup group game counts. Minnesota plays its first game since Anthony Edwards had knee surgery, and the Clippers arrive 1-3 with a turnover problem everyone has noticed.
The Wolves without Edwards are a different team. Edwards was scoring about 33 a game. In the first game without Edwards, Minnesota lost at home to a Golden State team missing Butler, Moody, Porzingis and Santos, and trailed by as many as 24. The "by committee" scoring went 15-of-45 from three. Rudy Gobert is 0-for-13 from the field over the last two games, so defenses can sag off and load up on Ball, Dosunmu and Kuminga.
Yes, the Clippers have turned it over 26, 26 and 24 times in three straight. But those came against OKC and the Lakers, who had 13 to 15 steals in those games. Minnesota hasn't had more than 11 steals in any game, and its fast-break high is 17. The Lakers got 24 on the break Wednesday. The pressure works the other way too. The Clippers have 10 or more steals every night, and LaMelo Ball has 13 turnovers in the last two games.
The Clippers lost by 8 at the Lakers with Doncic playing and by 7 at OKC, and both of those teams are 4-1. This Minnesota group isn't better than either. Rui Hachimura has reportedly been upgraded to probable. That brings back size against Kuminga and McDaniels, even with Hachimura shooting 10-of-38.
The risks are real. Minnesota has 17 or more offensive rebounds in three of five games, and the Clippers gave up 64 and 58 points in the paint to OKC and the Lakers. The Clippers' scoring has slid from 121 to 87. Cup point differential also gives the Wolves a reason to keep pushing if they get ahead. If Hachimura is ruled out late, this play gets thinner.
Minnesota probably wins. I don't trust this offense to clear 7.5 without its closer. Give me the points.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
LAC and MIN split last season 2-2
2-2The Clippers and Minnesota split four games last season. Tonight is the first meeting this season, and Minnesota is without Edwards, so last year's split says little about this game.
REPLACEMENT
Bradley Beal is OUT for LAC
OUTBradley Beal is out for the Clippers as they manage a right knee injury. His scoring has to come from elsewhere tonight at Minnesota.
Donte DiVincenzo is OUT for MIN
OUTDonte DiVincenzo is out for Minnesota while recovering from right Achilles surgery. This is a long-term absence that the Timberwolves rotation already accounts for.
Anthony Edwards is OUT for MIN
OUTEdwards is out after arthroscopic surgery on his right side, and the report says the procedure went well. A surgery absence usually lasts more than one night, so expect this to hold for a stretch. The Clippers have their own question, with Hachimura questionable, so check both reports before settling on a view of the game.
Max Strus is OUT for LAC
OUTMax Strus is out for the Clippers with a torn right plantar fascia. He is making progress but still not playing tonight.
Yanic Konan Niederhauser is OUT for LAC
OUTYanic Konan Niederhauser is out for the Clippers after right Lisfranc surgery. The Clippers are thin in the frontcourt tonight.
Brandon Ingram is OUT for LAC
OUTBrandon Ingram is out for the Clippers after right heel surgery. He is making progress but is not available tonight, so the Clippers lose another scorer.
Jordan Miller is OUT for LAC
OUTJordan Miller is out for the Clippers after left rotator cuff surgery. He has been out since before the season, so this is already priced in.
Rui Hachimura is Questionable for LAC
QuestionableHachimura is questionable with left quad soreness. With Edwards out for Minnesota, the Clippers' availability decides how one-sided this matchup looks, so check his status close to tipoff.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on 2 days rest
2d bothBoth teams are on two days of rest, so the schedule is even. Edwards being out for Minnesota matters much more than rest here.
STREAK
LAC has lost 3 straight
L3The Clippers have lost three straight by 10.3 points a game on average and are 1-3 over their last 4. That is a small sample, and they are missing Bradley Beal, Max Strus, Brandon Ingram, Yanic Konan Niederhauser and Jordan Miller tonight. A depleted roster explains the slide better than the record alone does. The line at Minnesota should reflect the injuries, so look at who is available.

2- GARY'S PICKTERRENCE SHANNON JR.POINTS OVER 14.5
Anthony Edwards is out after knee surgery, and Chris Finch has said plainly that the scoring will come by committee. Shannon is the first name in that committee. Dosunmu moved into the starting five and Shannon took over as the sixth man. In the first game without Edwards he played 27 minutes and scored 19. He took 13 shots and got to the line 10 times, making 8.
The free throws are what make this a bet. Shannon attacks the rim on every catch, and the Clippers foul a lot. They were called for 24 fouls against the Lakers and 24 against Sacramento. They also turn the ball over at a rate no team can survive: 24 or more in three straight games. Each of those giveaways is a chance for a downhill guard to get loose in the open floor, and Shannon is the Minnesota player most likely to take it.
He was already scoring in the low to mid teens before his role grew, while Edwards was taking 20 to 30 shots a night. Those shots have to go somewhere now. Even if the game gets away from the Clippers and the starters sit, a bench scorer keeps playing into the fourth quarter. I am taking the over at even money.
- GARY'S PICKRUI HACHIMURAPOINTS UNDER 14.5
Hachimura has been upgraded to probable, but he is coming back on a sore left quad after missing a game and sitting out practice. A quad problem takes the legs out of a jump shot, and his shot was already off before he got hurt. He went 3 of 13, 5 of 14 and 2 of 11 in his three games. He cleared this number once, and that night it took him 14 shots to get to 16 points.
The matchup does not help him. Jaden McDaniels is likely to guard him, and McDaniels is one of the longest and most disruptive forwards in the league. Gobert is waiting at the rim behind him. Hachimura also gets few free throws, so he has to make his jumpers to reach this line.
He is also low on the list of who gets the ball. Garland controls the offense, Wagler just scored 21 and is earning more touches, and Lopez gives the Clippers another option. Their turnover problem means fewer shots for everyone, and the third or fourth option feels that most. I expect a modest night, so I am taking the under.
