The read

The Pacers walk into Kaseya Center tonight without Tyrese Haliburton, without Ivica Zubac, and without Rick Carlisle, who is away for a family service, so assistant Lloyd Pierce coaches the NBA Cup group opener. That's why Miami is laying 7.5. I'm taking the points anyway, because this Heat team hasn't earned that number at home.

Miami is 0-3 at Kaseya and has been outscored 372-326 there, about 15 points a night. The Heat never led Detroit and led Minnesota by 4 at most, all with the same healthy starting five. Their defense allows 120.8 points per game, and opponents are hitting 39.5% from three. Their lone win, by 12 at Atlanta, is the only time they've cleared this number.

Indiana has already played this game. Wednesday against a 4-1 Philadelphia team, with no Haliburton and no Zubac, the Pacers led by 13, were up 88-75 after three, and lost by just 5 while shooting 9-of-36 from deep. Andrew Nembhard ran the show with 14 assists, and Pascal Siakam has scored 20+ in three straight. Indiana averages 55.2 paint points and 26.4 free-throw attempts, which puts pressure on Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Early fouls on one of them have shaped three of Miami's five games, and Antetokounmpo is 25-of-42 at the line.

The risks are real. Without Zubac, Milwaukee won the boards 61-48 and scored 24 second-chance points, and Antetokounmpo just grabbed 18 rebounds. Indiana was outscored 39-21 and 26-17 in its last two fourth quarters. Dallas beat the Pacers by 16 and the Heat by only 4. Miami's new pick-and-roll attack produced 70 paint points in Atlanta. Nembhard (neck) and Aaron Nesmith (hamstring) are both probable, and a late scratch from either changes this.

Still, a 1-4 team that hasn't won at home shouldn't be laying this many points against a team that just took a far better opponent to the wire in the same spot. Give me Indiana +7.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • IND won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Indiana won two of three meetings last season by 5 a game, which means those games were close. Indiana is without Haliburton tonight, so that series doesn't describe this matchup well. Miami has Fontecchio questionable with an illness.

REPLACEMENT

  • Johnny Furphy is OUT for IND

    OUT

Johnny Furphy is out for Indiana while recovering from a torn right ACL. This is a long-running absence that is already built into the Pacers rotation.

  • Tyrese Haliburton is OUT for IND

    OUT

Haliburton is out with a left hamstring strain, and earlier reporting said he will miss at least the next stretch of games. This looks like a multi-game absence, so it should hold beyond tonight. Indiana's ball handling shifts to other players, and that matters more for assist and usage props than for the side.

  • Ivica Zubac is OUT for IND

    OUT

Ivica Zubac is out for Indiana with a left ankle sprain. The Pacers lose their starting center at Miami, so their rebounding and rim protection get thinner.

  • Ben Sheppard is OUT for IND

    OUT

Ben Sheppard is out for Indiana after left meniscus surgery. Indiana loses wing depth tonight at Miami.

  • T.J. McConnell is OUT for IND

    OUT

T.J. McConnell is out for Indiana with a right hamstring strain. Backup guard minutes go to others on the Pacers tonight at Miami.

  • Simone Fontecchio is Questionable for MIA

    Questionable

Fontecchio is questionable with an illness, a tag that usually gets settled late. Check his status close to tipoff, especially with Haliburton out for Indiana.

SITUATIONAL

  • Both sides on 2 days rest

    2d both

Both teams are on two days of rest, so neither has a schedule edge. Haliburton being out for Indiana matters much more than rest here.

    Indiana Pacers

Indiana is out of ball handlers. Haliburton is gone for at least two weeks with the hamstring, McConnell still hasn't played a game, and Sheppard is out for months after meniscus surgery. That leaves Nembhard as the engine, and we already saw what that looks like on Wednesday against Philadelphia: 35 minutes, 14 assists, every possession running through the same pair of hands.

Behind Nembhard the guard depth is Quenton Jackson and Braden Smith, so there is nobody to take the ball away. Lloyd Pierce running the bench with Carlisle away has no reason to change the one structure Indiana has right now. This Pacers team moves the ball regardless of who starts it, with 30 assists in Wednesday's loss, and Miami is trying to play faster after Spoelstra called the pace way too slow.

A quicker game means more possessions for Nembhard to create. The neck is the risk, and Nembhard carried the same probable tag into Wednesday and handed out 14. I'll pay the price on the only real creator left on the roster.
