The read

Houston rolls into American Airlines Center at 5-0 for an NBA Cup rematch, nine days after beating Dallas by 18 in the opener. The Rockets are the better team, but I don't trust them to win by 7+ on the road tonight with a thin backcourt, Sengun's back in question and Oklahoma City waiting in Houston tomorrow.

That opener margin came mostly from turnovers. Dallas gave it away 21 times, and Houston won points off turnovers 32-19, fast-break points 29-17 and offensive rebounds 17-8. In the three games since with Flagg and Irving both available, Dallas committed 15, 17 and 11.

Dallas is about as healthy as it has been. Flagg is playing through the shoulder sprain at a high level: 29 points and 11 assists at Miami, then 26 and 8 with zero turnovers against OKC. Irving is off the report, Martin is back, and the Mavs won both games Marshall missed.

Houston is going the other way. Sheppard is out with a new back issue, Adams is out, Smart has missed three straight, and Udoka's own word on Sengun was "we'll be cautious." This is also the front end of a back-to-back.

The Rockets give back late leads, too. At home against Atlanta they were up 20 with 5:00 left and won by 10. At Atlanta, they were up 14 with 5:00 left and won by 7. In the opener they led by 37 and won by 18. With the bench thinner and OKC tomorrow, the starters may sit early. Dallas also fires away from deep, with 46 and 45 threes in its last two games, and that variance helps an underdog.

The Houston case is real: a +14.2 average margin, a 32-point win at Milwaukee without Sengun, and an 18-point win over Dallas with Eason ejected in the 1st quarter. Dallas's 24-point rout of OKC came against a Thunder team missing Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Caruso and Wallace. Houston also averages 27.4 free-throw attempts to Dallas's 17.2.

Sengun is the swing. He scored 23, 29, 17 and 29 in his four games, and reports on his status are split. If he sits, I like this more. If he plays full minutes, it's still Dallas, just smaller.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • HOU and DAL split last season 2-2

    2-2

Houston and Dallas split four games last season, so the series doesn't favor either side. Tonight is the first meeting this season, and both teams have players out or questionable, so the injury report matters more than last year's split.

REPLACEMENT

  • Dereck Lively II is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Dereck Lively II is out for Dallas after right foot surgery and had already been ruled out ahead of time. This is a known absence, so the market has likely adjusted for it.

  • Santi Aldama is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Santi Aldama is out for Dallas tonight after right knee surgery; he had been listed as doubtful. His minutes have to go to someone else on the Dallas roster, so check the rotation news before looking at Dallas player props.

  • Reed Sheppard is OUT for HOU

    OUT

Sheppard is out with low back soreness, and that was reported a day early. Houston also has Sengun questionable with back soreness and Smart questionable with a forearm strain, so the team's depth is the question tonight. Wait for the final word on those two before deciding how you see Houston.

  • Julian Phillips is OUT for HOU

    OUT

Phillips is a two-way player listed out on G League designation. This is a roster formality with no real betting effect.

  • Quadir Copeland is OUT for HOU

    OUT

Copeland is on a two-way deal and listed out on G League designation. This is routine and won't move this game.

  • Sergio De Larrea is OUT for DAL

    OUT

De Larrea is out with a right knee sprain, and that was reported a day ahead of tonight. Dallas has had time to plan the rotation without him, and the line should already reflect it. For player props, look at whoever on Dallas picks up his minutes.

  • Steven Adams is OUT for HOU

    OUT

Steven Adams is out for Houston with a right soleus strain. Houston is down a big man tonight at Dallas, which affects its rebounding and frontcourt rotation.

  • Tarik Biberovic is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Tarik Biberovic is out for Dallas with right heel bursitis after being listed as doubtful. It is a depth loss for the Mavericks against Houston.

  • Naji Marshall is Questionable for DAL

    Questionable

Marshall is questionable with an illness, and illness tags often get decided right before the game. Dallas already has De Larrea out, so check late news before betting Dallas props.

  • Alperen Sengun is Questionable for HOU

    Questionable

Sengun is questionable with low back soreness, which is the same issue that has Sheppard ruled out. Houston could be thin if Sengun sits as well. His status is the main injury news to watch for this game.

  • Marcus Smart is Questionable for HOU

    Questionable

Smart is questionable with a left forearm strain. Houston already has Sheppard out and Sengun questionable, so his status matters more than usual for the team's depth. Wait for the final report before betting Houston props.

SITUATIONAL

  • Both sides on 2 days rest

    2d both

Both teams are on two days of rest, so the schedule is even. Houston's back problems, with Sheppard out and Sengun questionable, matter much more than rest.

STREAK

  • HOU has won 5 straight

    W5

Houston has won five in a row, and the wins have been lopsided at 14.2 points a game on average. That is a 5-0 start over a short stretch, and the sheet doesn't say who they beat, so part of that margin may be the schedule. Runs like this end and blowout margins tend to shrink. At Dallas tonight, ask whether the spread is pricing the streak or the team underneath it.

    Cooper Flagg
    Points over 23.5

    -107 · CASHED · ACTUAL 33

    Dallas Mavericks

In every full game Flagg has played, he has cleared this number. The only game that kept him under was the night in Indiana when Nesmith hit him and he left before halftime. Since that shoulder sprain he has come back with 29 at Miami and 26 against Oklahoma City, so the shoulder is not limiting him.

The opener matters most to me. Houston won by 18 and Flagg still scored 32 against this defense. He got to the line 13 times by going straight at a frontline that had no answer for his downhill attack. Houston is still thin up front. Adams is out, Sengun is nursing his back, and if Sengun sits, Capela and Tshiebwe are the bodies Flagg is driving into.

Dallas also needs more from him tonight. De Larrea is out, Marshall looks like he misses a third straight game, and Irving is coming off a questionable tag for knee management. Flagg is running the offense now, with 11 assists at Miami and 8 against the Thunder. He has the ball and he is taking the shots, which is how a scorer gets past 24.

The risk is a blowout that ends his night early. In the opener Dallas trailed by more than 30 and he still played 33 minutes, because this coaching staff keeps its best player on the floor. This is also an NBA Cup game that counts in the group standings. I will lay the small price.

  • GARY'S PICK
    KYRIE IRVINGPOINTS UNDER 18.5
    NBADallas Mavericks· -103

    Kyrie Irving
    Points under 18.5

    -103 · LOST · ACTUAL 35

    Dallas Mavericks

The market is pricing the Kyrie of a few years ago. The player Dallas is actually using has a managed left knee. He played 24 minutes in the opener, 25 in Indiana on a restriction, sat the back half of the back-to-back, and was questionable again Wednesday before logging 27. His workload stays capped, and Dallas has every reason to keep it that way through November.

His role has changed too. Flagg is running the offense, so Irving spends more possessions spotting up off the ball. He is shooting very few free throws, so reaching 19 depends on his jumper getting hot. The one game he cleared this line came in Indiana, where he made five threes against a Pacers defense with a lot of holes. Against Houston in the opener, he had 15 on nine shots in 24 minutes.

Houston defends guards as well as anyone. VanVleet, Amen Thompson and Eason keep pressure on the ball for the whole game, and that length makes it hard for a scorer working in short shifts to find a rhythm. If the Rockets build a lead the way they did in the opener, Dallas has even less reason to push his minutes.

At close to even money I am happy to take the under on a capped veteran facing this defense.
