The read

A 4-1 Detroit team walks into Barclays on Friday night for an NBA Cup group game against a Brooklyn team still looking for its first win. The market wants the Pistons to win by nine on the road. I'm taking the points.

Detroit's offense hasn't been building margins since Jalen Duren's hamstring gave out. In three games without the big man, the Pistons scored 106, 97 and 97. Over the last two they shot 22-70 from three, with Duncan Robinson at 8-27. Wednesday's win over Charlotte was ugly, and Bickerstaff said so: 34-76 shooting, rescued by 25 Hornets turnovers.

The spot is rough too. This is game 3 in 4 nights. Cade Cunningham logged 39 minutes Wednesday and Paul Reed logged 38, and behind Reed there's almost nothing; Tolu Smith got 1 minute. Reed had 5 fouls and a flagrant at New York. Without Duren, Detroit got outrebounded 45-33 by Charlotte and gave the Knicks 19 offensive boards. Brooklyn pulled down 18 offensive rebounds at Cleveland and comes in with 2 days off at home.

The Nets' 0-4 is also softer than it reads: losses by 7, 4, 27 and 1. The blowout came on the second night of a back-to-back. They were down 15 with 5:00 left at Cleveland and lost by 4, and they took Boston to overtime on the road. They fired 49 and 50 threes in two of those games, exactly the kind of late variance you want when holding +8.5. Detroit, meanwhile, has cleared 8.5 just twice: against Miami and against a Philly team on a back-to-back without Embiid. The wins over Boston and Charlotte were by 8, both at home.

The risks are real. Brooklyn turned it over 22 and 19 times in its first two games, allows 124 a night and fouls a ton. Noah Clowney's illness could thin the defense further, and the Charlotte comparison favors Detroit by 15. But a tired, thin road favorite that's been winning ugly isn't one I want laying nine. Nets plus the points.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • DET won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

Detroit won three of four meetings last season by 26.8 a game, which is a lopsided margin. Brooklyn is short-handed again tonight, with Demin out and several young players on G League assignment. A big spread has to account for both of those, along with Brooklyn getting an extra day of rest.

REPLACEMENT

  • Egor Demin is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Demin is out with a right bone bruise. The other recent news on him is that Brooklyn picked up his third-year option, so the team still sees him as part of its plans. Brooklyn has several more players out tonight, so this one is part of a thin roster.

  • Tyler Bilodeau is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Tyler Bilodeau is out for Brooklyn on a two-way deal and dealing with a shoulder issue. He is a deep reserve, so this is unlikely to move anything.

  • Ben Saraf is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Saraf is on G League assignment. That's a development move rather than an injury, and it doesn't change much for Brooklyn tonight.

  • Grant Nelson is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Nelson is a two-way player listed out on G League designation. This is a roster formality and shouldn't change how you see the game.

  • Joshua Jefferson is OUT for BKN

    OUT

Jefferson is on G League assignment, which is a roster move rather than an injury. It shouldn't change how you see this game.

  • Ugonna Onyenso is OUT for DET

    OUT

Onyenso is on a two-way deal and listed out on G League designation. This is routine and has no real effect on Detroit's outlook tonight.

  • Jalen Duren is OUT for DET

    OUT

Jalen Duren is out for Detroit with a right hamstring strain and is set to be re-evaluated in two weeks. Detroit loses its starting center at Brooklyn, so rebounding and interior minutes go to others.

  • Isaac Jones is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Jones is on a two-way deal and listed questionable on G League designation. This won't change how you see the game.

  • Drake Powell is Questionable for BKN

    Questionable

Powell is listed questionable while on G League assignment. That's a roster move rather than an injury, and it adds one more name to Brooklyn's thin list tonight.

  • Isaiah Joe is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Joe is questionable with a right hip contusion. A bruise like that often clears quickly, but check the final status before tipoff.

  • Elijah Harkless is Questionable for DET

    Questionable

Harkless is a two-way player listed questionable on G League designation. It's a roster formality with little betting effect.

SITUATIONAL

  • BKN on 3d, DET on 2d

    3d vs 2d

Brooklyn gets one more day of rest than Detroit, three days to two. That's a small edge, and Brooklyn's thin roster probably matters more than the extra day. Don't give it much weight.

STREAK

  • BKN has lost 4 straight

    L4

Brooklyn has lost four straight, by 9.8 points a game on average, and is 0-4 over that stretch. Four games is a small sample, and the sheet doesn't name the opponents, so some of the margin may be who they drew. Losing streaks tend to break and deficits tend to tighten. Against Detroit tonight, check whether the number is built on the four losses or on a fuller view of both rosters.

    Cade Cunningham
    Assists under 9.5

    -135 · CASHED · ACTUAL 4

    Detroit Pistons

Cade has been steady as a passer, and steady is the problem for this number. His assist nights have sat in the seven and eight range all season, including the games where Detroit shot well and moved the ball. He has had nothing close to double digits. With Duren out, he has carried more of the scoring, and that showed against Charlotte: 22 shots, 30 points and seven assists.

Ausar Thompson is back and just handed out eight himself. Daniss Jenkins also runs stretches of the offense. Those two take creation off Cade's plate. Then there is the game script.

Detroit is laying 8.5 against an 0-4 team on the third game in four nights, and Cade's knee drew attention in the Charlotte game. If this gets comfortable after three quarters, Bickerstaff has every reason to sit him early. The juice is real, but the line sits above everything he has done, and I will pay it.

  • GARY'S PICK
    DUNCAN ROBINSON3-POINTERS OVER 3.5
    NBADetroit Pistons· +128

    Duncan Robinson
    3-Pointers over 3.5

    +128 · LOST · ACTUAL 2

    Detroit Pistons

Robinson is getting up eight to ten threes a night as a starter playing around 30 minutes. At that volume, four makes is a normal shooting night for him. He opened the season with three straight five-make games before cooling against the Knicks and Charlotte, and I am happy to buy him after a cold spell at plus money.

The matchup helps. Indiana went 21 of 43 from deep against Brooklyn, and Cleveland and Charlotte both got good looks. The Nets' perimeter group is thin tonight.

Demin is out, Clowney is sick and may sit, and Brooklyn is leaning on young guards and a G League recall. Detroit's offense without Duren is Cade getting into the paint and kicking out, and Robinson is the first read on the weak side. Isaiah Joe returning could cost him a few minutes, but Robinson's starting role is safe and the shots will be there.
