The read

It's Friday night at Mortgage Matchup Center, with the NBA Cup opener for both teams and their first meeting of the season. Denver lays 4.5 on the road against a Suns team that spent the week admitting its defense is a problem.

The offenses are basically even: Denver scores about 111 points per 100 possessions and Phoenix about 110. The gap is at the other end. Denver allows about 114 per 100. Phoenix allows about 125 and has been over 120 in all three games. Throw out the 83-124 blowout in Portland and Phoenix still allows about 123.5. Dillon Brooks called the defense "terrible." I won't argue.

Phoenix's results also look better than they were. Both teams have played Oklahoma City and Golden State: - At OKC: Phoenix lost by 11 to a Thunder team missing Holmgren, Wallace and Jalen Williams on the second night of a back-to-back. Denver lost by 12 to a nearly full Thunder roster in its opener. - Vs. Golden State: Phoenix's 131-122 win came without Curry, Draymond Green, Horford and Podziemski, also on a back-to-back. Denver's 20-point loss came with all four available.

Then there's the matchup that decides this one. Mark Williams is out and Maluach is a second-year starter. Ott says the Suns need "48 minutes of great center play" and aren't where they need to be on the defensive glass. Phoenix has given up 47 offensive rebounds and 68 second-chance points in three games. Nikola Jokic just went 21-13-10 in New Orleans. Cam Johnson is expected back, adding a shooter to a team hitting 32.8% from three against a defense allowing 40.7%.

The risks are real: - Schedule: Phoenix is home on three days off after a week of defensive practice. Denver closes a road trip on one day off. - Denver's mistakes: the Nuggets average 16 turnovers, and Golden State shot 22-44 from three against them. - Gordon's slump: Aaron Gordon is 7-29 over the last three games. - Booker's range: Devin Booker swung from 43 points to 3 in consecutive games, and the 43 version can beat any number. - Ighodaro: Oso Ighodaro may return from an oblique strain and give Phoenix another big body.

This is a lean, not a hammer. Phoenix's defensive and rebounding holes line up with exactly what Jokic does best. I'm laying the 4.5 with Denver.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • DEN won last season's series 3-0

    3-0

Denver swept Phoenix in three meetings last season and won by 14 a game. That's a clear gap, but it's three games from last year with different rosters, and tonight is the first meeting this season. Phoenix also has the rest edge tonight, so last season's margin shouldn't carry over automatically.

REPLACEMENT

  • Spencer Jones is OUT for DEN

    OUT

Spencer Jones is out for Denver while the team manages a hamstring injury on both legs. His minutes go to other Nuggets wings tonight.

  • Drew Timme is OUT for PHX

    OUT

Timme is a two-way player listed out on G League designation. This is a roster formality and won't move the game.

  • Julian Strawther is OUT for DEN

    OUT

Julian Strawther is out for Denver with a left knee sprain. His wing minutes go to other Nuggets tonight at Phoenix.

  • Mark Williams is OUT for PHX

    OUT

Mark Williams is out for Phoenix after left shoulder surgery. He has been out since before the season, so Phoenix's frontcourt has already been playing without him.

  • Cameron Johnson is Questionable for DEN

    Questionable

Johnson is questionable with a right ankle sprain, and he has carried that tag since yesterday. If he plays, keep in mind he may be limited. Denver also has Diallo questionable, so check the wing rotation before tipoff.

  • Alpha Diallo is Questionable for DEN

    Questionable

Diallo is questionable for personal reasons, which is harder to predict than an injury. Check his status close to tipoff.

  • Oso Ighodaro is Questionable for PHX

    Questionable

Ighodaro is questionable with a right oblique strain. Oblique injuries can linger, so check his final status before tipoff. Denver also has two players questionable.

SITUATIONAL

  • PHX on 4d, DEN on 2d

    4d vs 2d

Phoenix has had four days off, and Denver has had two. Two days usually isn't enough to change much for players' legs, but it gives the home team more practice and recovery time. This counts in Phoenix's favor, and Denver's three-game sweep last season pulls the other way, so neither should decide the game alone.

    Denver Nuggets

This is the softest frontcourt Jokic will see for a while, and I get to bet it at plus money. Mark Williams is out after shoulder surgery. Oso Ighodaro is coming back from an oblique strain and will be eased in. That leaves Khaman Maluach, a second-year center, and Duop Reath on a two-way deal to hold the paint against the best positional rebounder in the league. Jordan Ott said it himself this week: Phoenix is nowhere near where it needs to be on the defensive glass. Portland, Golden State and Oklahoma City all crashed the Suns' boards at will.

The two quiet nights on Jokic's line came against Oklahoma City's length and a Golden State team that made 22 threes and left few long misses. Against two thinner New Orleans frontlines he grabbed 15 and 13. Phoenix lets a lot of threes fly, and those long caroms land in Jokic's area. This game should run close to 100 possessions, Denver is a short road favorite so his minutes should hold, and the Suns have no one to keep him off the ball.

    Phoenix Suns

This is the other side of the same matchup, and the price is better than it should be. Maluach's rebounding is tied to his minutes. He grabbed nine in 28 minutes against a Golden State team missing four rotation players and six in 17 minutes at Portland. He got those minutes because Ighodaro was hurt and Williams was out. Ighodaro practiced fully this week, Ott says he is trending toward tonight, and the local beat expects him back. The Suns have already said Maluach and Reath give up time when Ighodaro is cleared.

When Maluach is on the floor, he is matched against Jokic, who seals bodies off the glass better than anyone. Aaron Gordon and Trevon Brazile have been crashing hard for Denver too. Gordon just pulled down 11 at New Orleans. Ott's line about wanting 48 minutes of great center play tells you he is still experimenting at the position. A rookie-level big losing minutes to a returning teammate and boxed out by Jokic should struggle to reach eight, and I am getting paid plus money to bet that he doesn't.
