The read

Four nights after Boston beat Chicago by 35 on this same floor, the Bulls are back at TD Garden for both teams' first East Group C game in the NBA Cup. The market remembers Monday, and that's why Boston is laying 15.5.

I think Monday was the outlier. Leave out the Bulls game and Boston is minus-3 combined: an 8-point loss at Detroit, a 4-point win over the Knicks and a 1-point overtime win over 0-4 Brooklyn. Covering tonight means winning by 16 or more, and Boston has done that once in four games.

Look at what built the 35. Boston made 21 threes to Chicago's 12, which is 27 points right there. Chicago turned it over 25 times, Boston had 14 steals, and the Celtics scored 39 points off turnovers to the Bulls' 17. Payton Pritchard hit 7 of 10 from three for 28 points. In his other three games he scored 17, 4 and 4. Shooting and live-ball turnovers swing a lot from game to game.

The Bulls' offense works when they take care of the ball. In their three non-blowout games they had 14, 12 and 12 turnovers and scored 132, 120 and 127. Josh Giddey had 30 assists and 3 turnovers across those games, and Norman Powell is coming off a 30-point night.

Then there's the common opponent. Boston beat a rested Knicks team by 4. Chicago lost to New York by 6 at home, with the Knicks on the second night of a back-to-back. That's a 10-point gap before home court and fatigue, which puts you near this number, not past it.

The risks are real. Chicago has allowed 124 or more in every game, lost by 43 at Toronto and by 35 here, and is minus-46 in third quarters. Nic Claxton is out, Jalen Smith is questionable with a finger sprain, and Boston grabbed 19 offensive rebounds on Monday. Point differential counts in Cup group play, so Boston has a reason to keep pushing.

At -118 the price is steep, so this is a small play. If Smith and Tobe Awaka both sit, I'd pass. Patrick Williams' expected season debut helps.

Injuries noted

Chicago Bulls: Tobe Awaka (Questionable) — Injury/Illness - Left Ankle Sprain; Nic Claxton (Out) — Injury/Illness - Left Hamstring Strain; Jalen Smith (Questionable) — Injury/Illness - Left Finger Sprain; Patrick Williams (Questionable) — Injury/Illness - Right Adductor Strain

Boston Celtics: Devin Carter (Out) — Injury/Illness - Illness

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • BOS won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Boston took two of three meetings last season by 10 a game. Three games is a small sample, and tonight is their first meeting this season. Chicago has three players questionable, so the final injury report will tell you more than this series.

REPLACEMENT

  • Nicolas Claxton is OUT for CHI

    OUT

Nicolas Claxton is out for Chicago with a left hamstring strain. Losing a big man shifts rebounds and interior minutes to the rest of the Bulls frontcourt tonight at Boston.

  • Devin Carter is OUT for BOS

    OUT

Devin Carter is out for Boston with mononucleosis. He has been sidelined for some time, so the Celtics rotation already reflects his absence.

  • Patrick Williams is Questionable for CHI

    Questionable

Williams is questionable with a right adductor strain. He is one of three questionable Bulls tonight, so Chicago's rotation is uncertain until the final report.

  • Jalen Smith is Questionable for CHI

    Questionable

Smith is questionable with a left finger sprain. Players often play through finger injuries, but he is one of three questionable Bulls, so check the final report.

  • Tobe Awaka is Questionable for CHI

    Questionable

Awaka is questionable with a left ankle sprain. He is one of three questionable Bulls tonight, so wait for Chicago's final report.

SITUATIONAL

  • BOS on 3d, CHI on 2d

    3d vs 2d

Boston has had three days off and Chicago two, so Boston gets one extra day. A one-day gap is a small edge. Chicago has more to worry about on its injury report, with Patrick Williams, Awaka and Jalen Smith all questionable.

STREAK

  • CHI has lost 3 straight

    L3

Chicago has lost three straight by an average of 15 points and is 1-4 in its recent games. That is a five-game sample, and they are without Nicolas Claxton tonight. Lopsided losses early in the season draw attention, so the line at Boston may already lean hard against them. The question is whether the number has priced in more of the slump than the roster deserves.

  • BOS has won 3 straight

    W3

Boston has won three straight by an average of 13.3 points and is 3-1 in its recent games. Four games is a small sample, and the sheet doesn't say who those wins came against. Tonight they host a Chicago team that has lost three in a row. When a hot home team meets a cold visitor, the line usually prices that in, so the value is in judging whether it has been pushed too far.

    Caleb Wilson

    Chicago Bulls

I'm taking plus money on a number Wilson has only cleared once, and that was the Washington game where he played 38 minutes and stayed on the floor through a tight finish. In his other games he has grabbed 6, 5, 6 and 4. He handles the ball and spots up more than he crashes the glass. He put up 18 shots against the Knicks and 15 here on Monday, so his energy goes into scoring.

This matchup makes it harder. Boston beat Chicago on the boards 54 to 40 four nights ago and took 19 offensive rebounds. Splitter said himself that the Celtics grab everything. Wilson finished that game with 5 in 32 minutes. Giddey sweeps up a lot of defensive rebounds as a guard, and Smith takes his share when he plays.

The biggest change is Patrick Williams. He told reporters he will make his season debut tonight, which puts another forward into the minutes and rebounds Wilson has been getting at the four. Add a spread of more than two touchdowns and a real chance of a fourth quarter decided early, and I like the under getting paid.

    Paul George
    Points under 20.5

    -109 · CASHED · ACTUAL 18

    Boston Celtics

The 38 he dropped in Detroit on opening night is propping up this number. His last three games went 15, 16 and 20, and he went 5 for 20 from three in that stretch. Tatum is running the offense right now, with 36 and 40 in his last two competitive games. White and Pritchard also need the ball, so George's touches are limited.

The game script points the same way. Boston is laying 15.5 at home against a team it beat by 35 on Monday. In that game George sat the entire fourth quarter, played 25 minutes and scored 16. Pritchard, Hauser and Gonzalez got the extra shots once it was out of hand. Point differential matters in Cup play, which might keep the starters out a little longer. Even so, a Bulls team that has given up 133, 134 and 135 in three of its losses is likely to fall far enough behind that Mazzulla sits his 36 year old wing early.
