The read

Four nights after Charlotte beat Washington by 7, the rematch moves to Capital One Arena for both teams' first NBA Cup game, and AJ Dybantsa makes his home debut. The market has flipped the script and made the Wizards a 1.5-point favorite. That's an 8.5-point swing from Monday's result, and I don't think home court and one rookie cover it.

Start on the glass. Charlotte grabbed 20 offensive rebounds Monday and won second-chance points 26-15. That wasn't a fluke: Washington allows 15.2 offensive boards a game, and Charlotte averages 14.6. Even in Dybantsa's debut, Cleveland outrebounded the Wizards 47-27. Now Justin Champagnie, who pulled down 14 at Chicago, is out after foot surgery.

Then there are the turnovers. The Hornets average 20.2 a game, and that's how they lose: 27 in the Atlanta blowout, 25 at Detroit. In their three wins they had 21, 16 and 12. Washington's opponents average just 14 turnovers, and the Wizards had only 4 steals Monday. This defense is poorly built to punish Charlotte's worst habit.

Brandon Miller is on a heater too: 34, 39 and 31 in his last three games, including 39 on 15-28 against this team. Washington, meanwhile, is 45-158 from three on the season.

It's not risk-free. Charlotte blew a 21-point lead after three against Miami and let Washington close Monday on an 8-0 run, so a late fade is the nightmare. Anthony Davis scored 29 on the Hornets, Dybantsa went 8-12 for 19 in the debut, and the Wizards piled up 66 paint points in Cleveland. Naz Reid sat the second half in Detroit for not meeting team standards. And the whole play leans on Dennis Schröder, who was upgraded to probable with a sore right foot. If Schröder sits, Sion James (5-27 from the field) runs the point, and I'd stay away.

With Schröder in uniform, I'll take the Hornets and the points. Charlotte's back-to-back is tomorrow, not tonight, so there's no fatigue tax to pay.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • CHA won last season's series 4-0

    4-0

Charlotte swept Washington 4-0 last season and won by 16 a game, so the matchup was lopsided. Tonight is their first meeting this season, and rosters change year to year, so last season's series says more about where these teams were than where they are. Use it as context for the matchup, not as a reason on its own.

REPLACEMENT

  • Kon Knueppel is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Kon Knueppel is out for Charlotte, on G League assignment while working back from a hamstring issue. He is not available tonight, so his minutes go elsewhere on the roster.

  • Tristan Vukcevic is OUT for WAS

    OUT

Tristan Vukcevic is out for Washington with a left hip impingement. He has been out for weeks, so it is a known absence.

  • Grant Williams is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Grant Williams is out for Charlotte with a right hamstring strain and was set to be re-evaluated. Charlotte is missing frontcourt depth tonight, which can shift minutes to others.

  • Kylan Boswell is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Boswell is on a two-way deal and is listed out on G League designation tonight. He was also out with a knee issue for the season opener, so Charlotte has already played without him. His absence shouldn't shift how you see this game.

  • Coby White is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Coby White is out for Charlotte with a left calf strain. His touches go elsewhere in the Hornets rotation tonight, which matters for anyone looking at Charlotte guard props.

  • Michael Ajayi is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Ajayi is on a two-way deal and listed out on G League designation. This is a routine move and won't affect how you see this game.

  • Justin Champagnie is OUT for WAS

    OUT

Champagnie is out after right foot surgery, and earlier reporting said he would miss several games. Washington will be without him for a stretch, so expect this status to hold for a while. Since the market has had time to price it in, the bigger questions are the other names on this game's report.

  • Jamir Watkins is OUT for WAS

    OUT

Jamir Watkins is out for Washington after left ACL surgery. This is a long-term absence the Wizards have already adjusted to.

  • Dennis Schroder is Questionable for CHA

    Questionable

Schroder is questionable with right foot inflammation and soreness. Washington has its own questionable player in Tre Johnson, and rest is even, so both injury reports matter for this game.

  • Tre Johnson is Questionable for WAS

    Questionable

Johnson is questionable with right Achilles soreness and tightness. Teams tend to be careful with Achilles issues, and Washington already has Champagnie out, so check his status late.

SITUATIONAL

  • Both sides on 2 days rest

    2d both

Both teams are on two days of rest, so the schedule gives neither side an edge. The injury reports matter more here, with Schroder and Tre Johnson both questionable.

    -109 · LOST · ACTUAL 19

    Charlotte Hornets

Brandon Miller has scored 34, 39 and 31 in his last three games, and the 39 came against this Washington team four nights ago on 28 shots. That shot volume is why I'm on the over. Coby White is still out, and Kon Knueppel was only recalled this morning after practicing in the G League, so I don't expect him to take much off Miller's plate tonight. Miller is the half-court offense. He's taking 26 to 29 shots a night and getting to the line, so he doesn't need a hot shooting night to clear this number.

Washington had Bilal Coulibaly on him early Monday, and it didn't slow him down. If Tre Johnson comes back from the Achilles soreness, Coulibaly's minutes probably shrink, which leaves fewer good defensive bodies to throw at Miller. AJ Dybantsa is still on a minutes limit, so he won't be the answer for long stretches either.

I'm also looking at the game script. Washington is only a point and a half favorite, and Charlotte's two duds this year came in blowouts. In close games Miller has played 36 to 38 minutes. This is a Cup game that counts, so I expect him to play his full minutes even with Philadelphia tomorrow night. At close to even money, I'll take the best scorer on the floor against a defense he just carved up.

  • GARY'S PICK
    NAZ REIDPOINTS UNDER 17.5

    Naz Reid
    Points under 17.5

    +100 · CASHED · ACTUAL 12

    Charlotte Hornets

Charles Lee sat Naz Reid for the entire second half in Detroit and said Reid didn't meet the team's standards. He gave no injury and no specifics. Reid is projected to start again, but I expect a short leash after a public message like that, especially on the first night of a back-to-back. Lee has Ryan Kalkbrenner and Tidjane Salaun to turn to, and Grayson Allen can soak up minutes if the coach goes small. One bad stretch and Reid's minutes could shrink in a hurry.

The matchup doesn't help him either. Reid got 18 against Washington on Monday, but it took him 22 shots, he went 2 for 8 from three and he didn't get to the line. Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr protect the rim, and Deandre Ayton gives Washington another big off the bench, so Reid's interior looks get crowded. Getting to 18 means he needs either a heavy shot diet or a hot night from deep. With his coach watching every possession, I don't trust him to get the first one.

Getting plus money on a line near his season form, with real minutes risk, is a price I'll take.
