The read

Two unbeaten teams meet at the Moda Center tonight, and Ja Morant faces Memphis for the first time since the June trade. The revenge story will get the attention, but the bet comes down to who plays center for Portland.

Robert Williams III was downgraded to doubtful this afternoon, and RotoWire has him trending toward missing. Williams has been Portland's only reliable big behind Donovan Clingan, averaging 9.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in 18.0 minutes, with 14 and 10 at the Lakers. Clingan has topped out at 26 minutes, so the rest of the center minutes fall to Hansen Yang or Micah Potter, both coach's-decision DNPs the last two games. That's a bad night to be thin, because Memphis is grabbing 14.5 offensive rebounds a game, including 19 at Sacramento and 18 at Golden State.

The number also lines up with Portland's real form. Take out the 124-83 rout of Phoenix and Portland won by 8 at Sacramento and by 7 at the Lakers. Memphis beat that same Kings team by 11 on the road, without Zach Edey. Rest favors the Grizzlies too: two days off against one for a Portland team just back from L.A. And Portland's 46-of-78 shooting night at the Lakers won't repeat.

This is a lean, not a hammer. Memphis's 4-0 came against teams now 1-4, 0-4 and 2-3, and the Grizzlies only beat Utah by 5 after the Jazz lost Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. in the first half. Memphis also averages 17 turnovers and 26.5 fouls a game against a Portland team getting nearly 30 free throws a night, though Portland is just 63-of-89 at the line. Ty Jerome is 1-of-12 from three over the last two games, and rookie Cameron Boozer is 17-of-61 from the field.

If Williams surprises and plays, the rebounding edge shrinks. As it stands, 7.5 is a lot to lay with Portland thin up front. Take the points.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • POR won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

Portland won last season's series 3-1, but only by 3 points a game across 4 meetings. That means these games were close even when the Blazers won. Tonight is the first meeting this season, and both teams arrive hot: Memphis has won 4 straight, Portland 3. Last season's tight margins fit a game that should be priced close.

REPLACEMENT

  • Shaedon Sharpe is OUT for POR

    OUT

Shaedon Sharpe is out after right meniscus surgery, an injury first reported in August. Portland has been playing without him, so this is a long absence the team has already built around rather than a new hole tonight.

  • John Tonje is Questionable for POR

    Questionable

John Tonje is questionable on a two-way G League deal. He sits deep on the bench and should not change anything tonight.

  • Chris Youngblood is Questionable for POR

    Questionable

Chris Youngblood is questionable, a two-way player who also sat earlier this week with an ankle issue. He is a depth piece, so his status should not move tonight's line.

  • Jayson Kent is Questionable for POR

    Questionable

Jayson Kent is questionable while on a two-way G League deal. He is a deep reserve, so his status should not affect the game.

  • Hansen Yang is Questionable for POR

    Questionable

Hansen Yang is questionable while on G League assignment. He is outside the regular rotation, so his status has little effect on tonight's game.

SITUATIONAL

  • MEM on 3d, POR on 2d

    3d vs 2d

Memphis has 3 days of rest and Portland has 2. A one-day difference at this level of rest is small, since both teams are fresh. Do not lean on the schedule here; neither side is tired.

STREAK

  • MEM has won 4 straight

    W4

4 wins in a row for MEM (9.8-point average margin), sitting 4-0 over their last 4.

  • POR has won 3 straight

    W3

Portland is 3-0 and winning by 18.7 a game, which means the Blazers have been blowing teams out. Three games is a very small sample, and average margins that large almost always come down as the schedule fills out. The start is strong, but an 18.7-point average is not a number to expect night after night. A bettor should watch whether the spread is now leaning on those blowouts.

    Portland Trail Blazers

This one starts with Robert Williams III. He's doubtful with the left knee, and he got downgraded during the afternoon. He has been soaking up 18 minutes a night behind Clingan and pulled 10 boards at the Lakers on Tuesday. If he sits, Nori has Yang Hansen and Micah Potter behind his starter, and neither one has earned real run lately. That pushes Clingan from the low 20s in minutes toward the high 20s, and he is already rebounding at a pace that clears this number with that extra time.

The matchup helps too. Memphis puts up a ton of shots and misses plenty of them. Bricks like 37 of 85 at Utah and 42 of 96 at Sacramento leave a lot of long rebounds sitting there. Zach Edey only gives them about 21 minutes, and he gets into foul trouble, so for most of the night Clingan is boxing out Isaiah Stewart, Quinten Post or a smaller lineup. With Clingan as the only true big Portland trusts tonight, I'll pay the price on the over.

  • GARY'S PICK
    CEDRIC COWARDREBOUNDS OVER 6.5
    NBAMemphis Grizzlies· +112

    Cedric Coward
    Rebounds over 6.5

    +112 · CASHED · ACTUAL 7

    Memphis Grizzlies

The book is pricing Coward like a normal wing, and Memphis doesn't use him like one. Edey plays limited minutes, so Iisalo leans on his wings to finish possessions on the glass, and Coward has taken that job. He went 11 and 11 in his last two games while playing over 30 minutes, and even his quiet opener against Utah got him to 7.

Portland launches a lot of threes, so plenty of misses come off long and fall to the guards and wings, and that's where Coward lives. The 7.5 point spread tells me the market expects a competitive game, so his minutes should hold up even though he has had a couple of nights with five fouls. Getting plus money on a number below what he's been doing is a price I'll take.
