The read
Both of these teams played last night, but only one slept in its own bed. Cleveland flew in for an 8 p.m. tip at State Farm Arena, pushed back an hour for the Dream's WNBA Finals game, to face an Atlanta team that has lost three straight. The line says coin flip. The spot says Hawks.
Start with the legs. Both clubs are playing their third game in four nights, but the Cavs added a flight. Their starters are also still carrying Monday's overtime: Harden 39 minutes, Mitchell 38, Mobley 38, Watson 37.
Then the depth. Jaylon Tyson (cervical strain) and Meleek Thomas (right foot) are both questionable after playing Wednesday. They combined for 27 points Monday and 17 last night, more than half of Cleveland's 32 bench points against Washington. Thomas is also the third ballhandler Atkinson just found. Atlanta's bench scored 51 last night, with Kingston Flemings going for 23 and Aaron Wiggins in double figures four games running.
The turnover battle leans Atlanta too. Hawks opponents average 20.2 giveaways, and Atlanta turns them into 23.8 points a night. Cleveland averages 17.25, with Harden and Mitchell combining for 32 in four games. The Cavs were cleaner the last two nights (13 and 12), but a tired road team facing Dyson Daniels is where old habits come back.
That 3-1 record is softer than it looks. All three wins came at home: Brooklyn (0-4) by four, Minnesota in overtime on the Wolves' back-to-back, and Washington. In their one road game, the Cavs blew a 69-45 halftime lead in Philadelphia. They're -18 in fourth quarters this season, while Atlanta is +20. Mobley's 12-of-18 from three won't last, and Harden is 18-of-55 from the field.
The risk is real. Atlanta lost by 12 at home to a 1-4 Miami team that scored 70 in the paint, and Cleveland grabbed 15 and 13 offensive rebounds the last two games. But Washington put 66 in the paint on the Cavs last night, and the Hawks average 56 there themselves.
If Tyson and Thomas both sit, I like this even more. Either way, I'm laying the short number with the home team that didn't have to travel. Hawks -1.5.

The research

HEAD-TO-HEAD
CLE and ATL split last season 2-2
2-2Cleveland and Atlanta split last season's series 2-2, so neither side owned the matchup. Tonight is their first meeting this season. An even split gives a bettor no strong head-to-head lean, which puts the focus on current form and who is available.
REPLACEMENT
Mouhamed Gueye is OUT for ATL
OUTMouhamed Gueye had surgery to repair a fractured left foot he suffered in a workout, so he is out for a while. Along with Veesaar, it thins Atlanta's frontcourt, which makes the Hawks' bench rotation the place to look for who picks up minutes.
Henri Veesaar is OUT for ATL
OUTHenri Veesaar is out with a torn right ACL and is expected to miss the season. That is a long-term loss for Atlanta's frontcourt, and with Mouhamed Gueye also out, the Hawks are thin up front. Expect more minutes and rebounds for whoever is left in the rotation. Because this is season-long, the market should already have it built in, but rebound props for remaining Hawks bigs are where it shows.
SITUATIONAL
Both sides on a back-to-back (played yesterday)
1d bothCleveland and Atlanta both played last night, so both teams are on a back-to-back. Neither side has a rest edge. Tired legs on both ends can mean sloppier, lower-efficiency play, which is a factor to weigh on the total more than the side.
STREAK
ATL has lost 3 straight
L33 losses in a row for ATL (9.7-point average deficit), sitting 2-3 over their last 5.
CLE has won 3 straight
W3Cleveland Cavaliers has won 3 straight, winning by 5.3 a game over the run; 3-1 across the last 4.

2- GARY'S PICKEVAN MOBLEYREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
Atlanta cannot keep bodies off its glass right now. Houston beat the Hawks 52 to 35 on the boards Monday, and Miami just poured 70 points into the paint Wednesday. The frontcourt behind Okongwu is thin: Gueye and Veesaar are out, Landale is playing through a broken nose, and Ejiofor is off on assignment. Okongwu has been landing between four and nine rebounds a night, which tells you he is not cleaning up the misses.
Mobley has been Cleveland's steadiest rebounder from day one, pulling in 12, 10, 10 and 8 while logging heavy minutes. The Cavs crashed for 15 offensive boards against Washington, and with both teams on the second night of a back-to-back, tired legs mean more missed jumpers and more long caroms for the bigger, fresher frame. Allen will take his share, but there are plenty to go around against this Hawks front line. I will pay the juice on Mobley clearing nine.
- GARY'S PICKJAMES HARDENPOINTS UNDER 18.5
This number sits above what Harden has actually been producing. Through four games the scoring has gone 16, 19, 12 and 16, and the shot has been off: 5 of 18 against Washington and 1 of 8 against Brooklyn. He is pushing 34 to 39 minutes, and tonight is the second night of a back-to-back on the road for a veteran guard whose legs carry his jumper.
Cleveland also has more hands on the ball now. Meleek Thomas came into the rotation as the third ballhandler Atkinson said they needed, Mitchell keeps getting his looks, and Mobley is hot from deep. Harden has been leaning into the playmaking role, and Atlanta can throw Dyson Daniels, one of the better perimeter defenders in the league, at him for long stretches. I expect a solid floor game with assists, and a scoring total that lands in the mid teens. Under 18.5.
