The read

The Bulls play their home opener on the second night of a back-to-back, and so do the Wizards, who flew in after a home loss to Toronto. Chicago is laying 1.5, which tells you the market sees a near coin flip. I'll take the points.

Start with what the number already knows. Both teams are playing their third game in four nights. Chicago's short trip home from Milwaukee beats Washington's flight in, but that was baked in when the schedule came out. Dybantsa, Vukcevic, Watkins and Claxton haven't played all season, so their absences change nothing. Patrick Williams was a coach's-decision DNP on Friday, so his questionable tag doesn't matter.

Then ignore the noise. Chicago's 43-point loss in Toronto came on 4-for-36 from three and 27 turnovers. That was a bad night, not who the Bulls are. Washington beat Milwaukee while shooting 6-for-28 from deep by living at the line. Two games each tells you very little.

What matters is who's on the floor. Anthony Davis is confirmed for the second night of the back-to-back with no minutes limit, and Davis is the best player in this game. Chicago has to handle Davis, Alex Sarr and Deandre Ayton without Nic Claxton, its best rim protector. Splitter putting Zach Collins back in the rotation for size tells you the Bulls see the problem too. Noa Essengue, whose length and deflections (three steals and a block Friday) earned the coach's praise, slid from Probable to Questionable late this afternoon. At most numbers that's nothing; at 1.5, small things count.

It isn't a one-way game. Toronto beat Washington 19 to 6 on the offensive glass, and the Bulls crash hard. Chicago also sleeps at home tonight while Washington traveled.

Still, with Davis and Trae Young both in, the Wizards are a slightly better team than a pick'em in Chicago implies. The half point is a bonus, not the reason. This is a lean, not a hammer, and if Davis is a late scratch, I'm off it.

REPLACEMENT

  • Nicolas Claxton is OUT for CHI

    OUT

Claxton has a hamstring injury and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Without him, Chicago is thinner at center, which matters against Anthony Davis tonight.

JOSH GIDDEYPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS UNDER 29.5
    NBAChicago Bulls· -121

    Josh Giddey
    Points Rebounds Assists under 29.5

    -121 · CASHED · ACTUAL 27

    Chicago Bulls

Giddey PRA under 29.5 at -121. This number is priced on who Giddey has been, and his role under Tiago Splitter is smaller than that.

Through two games he has played 24 and 25 minutes. Combined points, rebounds and assists came to 15 in Toronto and 19 in Milwaukee. He has shot 4-for-19 from the field and 0-for-6 from three. Even his best night, nine assists in Milwaukee, left him ten short of this line.

The minutes are the real story. Tre Jones ran the second unit well enough on Friday that he closed the game in Giddey's place. Giddey checked out with 3:56 left and never came back. Splitter praised Jones by name and said Okoro can finish games too. He also said the starting lineup isn't changing, and I believe him. Giddey still starts. But a starter who sits down the stretch while Jones handles the ball isn't reaching 30 on 25 minutes unless he's efficient everywhere, and he hasn't been.

Tonight is the second night of a back-to-back and Chicago's third game in four nights. That pushes a coach toward spreading minutes, and Splitter has already shown he'll go ten deep.

What beats it: a close fourth quarter where Splitter decides Giddey's passing is what he needs to close. A track meet would hurt too. Washington missed a lot of shots against Toronto, and a long night of defensive rebounds plus a run of assists can stack up fast for him. If Giddey plays 32 minutes, this is in trouble. Nothing he's seen through two games says he will.

  • GARY'S PICK
    ALEXANDRE SARRPOINTS UNDER 11.5
    NBAWashington Wizards· +102

    Alexandre Sarr
    Points under 11.5

    +102 · CASHED · ACTUAL 10

    Washington Wizards

Sarr points under 11.5 at +102. Getting plus money on this side is the draw.

Look at where Washington's shots go. Anthony Davis has taken 20 and 12 shots. Trae Young has taken 13 and 15. KyShawn George and Tre Johnson have both had nights of double-digit attempts. Sarr has been left with 9 shots in the opener and 4 against Toronto. He scored 6 and 7 in 24 and 25 minutes. He's been the fifth option among the starters, a screener and help defender next to Davis, and Deandre Ayton takes a share of the big minutes behind him.

Davis is confirmed for tonight with no minutes limit. As long as he is out there, the post touches against a Chicago front line missing Nic Claxton go through Davis. If the Bulls are short on size, Washington's answer is to feed its best player, not the third big. Second night of a back-to-back, with Ayton fresh off the bench, I don't see Sarr's minutes growing either.

What beats it: Davis in foul trouble or fading on tired legs, which would push the interior work to Sarr. Chicago has fouled a lot, 34 times in Toronto, and a handful of free throws can carry a big man over a line like this on their own. A couple of Young lobs plus a corner three and he's at 12 before you notice. That's the risk, and at plus money I'll take it.
