The read

Milwaukee limps into Philadelphia on the second night of a back-to-back, its third game in four nights, still looking for a first win. The Sixers had Friday off but will be without LeBron James, ruled out Saturday afternoon with low back sciatica.

James being out is already in this 12.5. The scoring hit is smaller than the name: James shot 5-of-13 and 5-of-14 in the first two games. What Philly really loses is the rebounding, the playmaking and the depth. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope likely starts, and Anfernee Simons, Adem Bona and Jabari Walker take on real minutes on a roster down to about eight. That's a genuine downgrade, but the number knows it.

What I think the number underrates is the matchup. Milwaukee's defense breaks down by fouling and giving up the paint: 32 and 26 fouls, opponents 32-of-41 and 28-of-30 at the line, 70 and 62 paint points allowed. That was against Washington and Chicago. It's also exactly how Philly scores right now. Thursday the Sixers went 7-of-28 from three and still put up 114, on 23-of-30 free throws and 24 from Joel Embiid. Embiid plays only one game of this weekend's back-to-back, and tonight is that game.

Early shooting tilts the picture too. Milwaukee's opponents shot 6-of-28 and 12-of-45 from three, and the Bucks still lost 128-116 and 132-125. Philly shot 11-of-40 and 7-of-28 and won both. Nobody is owed makes. But set the threes aside and Milwaukee's losses rest on fouls and paint defense, which tend to stick.

What I'm ignoring: the 2-0 and 0-2 records, the 29-point comeback against Cleveland and Milwaukee's two fourth-quarter fades. Tired legs tonight are plausible, but the back-to-back was priced from the open.

The risks are real. Philly's defense was flattered by cold shooting from the Knicks and Cavaliers, and the bench is thin. Tyler Herro's 34 on 12-of-24 Friday shows Milwaukee can keep pace if the threes fall. This is a lean, not a hammer: Philadelphia -12.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • PHI won last season's series 4-0

    4-0

Philadelphia beat Milwaukee all four times last season by 15.3 a game. Milwaukee's roster has changed, with Tyler Herro now there, so last season's matchups only go so far. The schedule tilts the same way tonight: Milwaukee is on a back-to-back and Philadelphia has two days of rest. Philadelphia is thin in the frontcourt, which is the one thing working against them.

REPLACEMENT

  • Dominick Barlow is OUT for PHI

    OUT

Barlow is out with a low back stress reaction and was expected to miss at least two weeks. Philadelphia is also without Ariel Hukporti and Tacko Fall, so the frontcourt is thin and the remaining bigs should see more minutes.

    TYRESE MAXEYPOINTS OVER 24.5
    NBAPhiladelphia 76ers· -115

    Tyrese Maxey
    Points over 24.5

    -115 · CASHED · ACTUAL 26

    Philadelphia 76ers

With LeBron James out, the ball has to live somewhere in this offense, and it lives with Tyrese Maxey. He played 40 and 42 minutes in the first two games with James on the floor and scored 28 and 32. Tonight the Sixers are down to about eight bodies. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is the likely replacement starter, and he took one shot Thursday. Anfernee Simons went 0-of-4 in his last outing. Somebody has to create, and Nick Nurse has already shown he will ride Maxey for heavy minutes.

The matchup helps him. Milwaukee has committed 32 and 26 fouls and has let opponents live in the paint, 70 and 62 points there. Maxey's speed going downhill is exactly what draws those fouls. He also gets his points without the three falling: he went 2-of-9 and 2-of-7 from deep and still cleared this number both nights. Milwaukee is on the second night of a back-to-back, its third game in four nights, and tired legs give up straight-line drives.

What beats it: the blowout. I have Philly laying 12.5, and if this is decided after three quarters, Maxey could sit the last stretch and finish in the low 30s for minutes. Joel Embiid plays tonight and will want his touches inside, so a big Embiid night shrinks Maxey's share. I'm on the over at 24.5, -115.

  • GARY'S PICK
    JAIME JAQUEZ JR.REBOUNDS OVER 5.5
    NBAMilwaukee Bucks· +114

    Jaime Jaquez Jr.
    Rebounds over 5.5

    +114 · CASHED · ACTUAL 8

    Milwaukee Bucks

Jaime Jaquez Jr. has been one of the busiest players on Milwaukee's floor: 31 and 35 minutes, with 7 and 11 rebounds. He plays the wing next to Myles Turner and Kyle Kuzma, and he is active on the glass in a way Tyler Herro and Ryan Rollins leave room for.

Philadelphia gives him chances. The Sixers have missed a lot of shots: 37-of-89 and 42-of-92 overall, 11-of-40 and 7-of-28 from three. Missed threes produce long rebounds that come off to the wings, which is where Jaquez lives. LeBron James, who pulled down 9 and 10 boards for Philly in the first two games, is out. That removes a big rebounder from the other side of every loose ball, and his likely replacement in the lineup is Caldwell-Pope, a spot-up shooter.

Plus money on a 5.5 line for a player who has cleared it twice in starter's minutes is the price I want.

What beats it: Embiid owns the defensive glass around the rim, and Philly getting to the free throw line as often as it does means fewer live misses to chase. The bigger risk is fatigue and the scoreboard. This is Milwaukee's third game in four nights, and if Philly runs away with it, Jaquez's minutes slide into the 20s. Over 5.5 rebounds, +114.
