The read

Two 2-0 teams, both on the second night of a back-to-back, meet in Atlanta's home opener, and the Hawks are laying just 1.5. At a number that small there's no cushion, so whoever holds the real edge in personnel decides it.

That edge sits with Atlanta. Fred VanVleet is out tonight on a workload plan reported back on October 20, so the market has known about that all along. What it may not have fully absorbed: Marcus Smart (forearm strain, added at 3:30 PM) and Reed Sheppard (knee bone bruise, missed Friday) were both still questionable on the 7 PM report. Those three guards carried Houston's backcourt minutes. Without them, the ball runs through Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun, with Bogdan Bogdanovic filling in. Durant and Sengun can create their own looks, but they'll be doing it against Dyson Daniels, Luguentz Dort, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Jalen Johnson. That group forced 20 turnovers at Orlando and 25 at Charlotte. Houston already gave it away 15 times in each of its first two games with VanVleet running the show.

The back-to-back is the same for both teams and already priced. How Friday went isn't. Houston's core ground through a tight one in Austin: Durant 37 minutes, Sengun 36, Thompson 36, Jabari Smith Jr. 34. Atlanta's starters watched the end of a 47-point blowout, none past 29 minutes. With VanVleet and Steven Adams resting, Houston's top guys carry the load again. Atlanta can lean on Aaron Wiggins, Dort, Jock Landale and Kingston Flemings off the bench.

Don't read much into the early margins. Charlotte shot 11-for-51 from three without Kon Knueppel and Coby White. Houston's win over Dallas was built on a 38-12 quarter, and the Spurs game came down to one Thompson block.

Hawks -1.5 at even money. It's a lean, not a hammer: if Smart and Sheppard both suit up, most of the edge goes away. If both sit, I like it more.

The research

REPLACEMENT

  • Mouhamed Gueye is OUT for ATL

    OUT

Gueye had surgery on a fractured left foot. Along with Henri Veesaar's absence, Atlanta is down two frontcourt pieces tonight against Houston.

  • Henri Veesaar is OUT for ATL

    OUT

Veesaar tore his right ACL and is expected to miss the whole season. With Mouhamed Gueye also out, Atlanta's frontcourt depth is thin, and minutes up front should go to whoever's left, Jalen Johnson included.

    +105 · CASHED · ACTUAL 7

    Houston Rockets

Houston plays tonight without Fred VanVleet, who ran the offense in both openers and had 11 assists against Dallas. Marcus Smart and Reed Sheppard are both questionable, so the guard minutes behind him are uncertain too. When the Rockets are thin at the point, the offense runs through Alperen Sengun at the elbow and the top of the key. He has already been that hub, with seven assists in Austin and five against Dallas, and VanVleet was on the floor for both.

Atlanta's defense will push the ball toward him. Dyson Daniels, Luguentz Dort and Nickeil Alexander-Walker crowd ball handlers and jump the passing lanes on the perimeter, which is how they forced 25 turnovers at Charlotte. Houston's best answer is to get the ball to Sengun early and play off him: Kevin Durant coming off screens, Jabari Smith Jr. spotting up, Amen Thompson cutting baseline. With Steven Adams out, there are fewer backup center minutes to cut into his night, and a 1.5 spread points to a close game where he plays deep into the fourth quarter like he did Friday.

Plus money on 5.5 for the main creator on a team missing its point guard is a price I'll take.

What beats it: Smart and Sheppard both play and take on the setup work, Houston's shooters go cold on the second night of a back-to-back, or Atlanta's hands turn Sengun's passes into steals before they become assists.

    NBAAtlanta Hawks· -103

    Jalen Johnson
    Points Rebounds Assists over 36.5

    -103 · CASHED · ACTUAL 51

    Atlanta Hawks

Jalen Johnson has posted 34 and 40 in points, rebounds and assists through two games while playing about 28 minutes each night. Neither minute total reflects a normal workload. He sat a long stretch at Orlando in foul trouble, and Atlanta emptied its bench with about seven minutes left in a 47-point rout at Charlotte. Tonight is a home opener against an unbeaten team with a 1.5 spread, so his minutes should climb into the mid 30s. He also gets them on fresher legs: he played 29 Friday while Durant, Sengun, Thompson and Smith all logged 34 or more in Austin.

His production comes from three directions, which is why the combined number is the one I want. He scored 19 and 20 without making a three. He handed out eight assists at Charlotte as a secondary creator. He pulled down 14 rebounds at Orlando. A Houston team without VanVleet, and with Smart and Sheppard in doubt, is a turnover risk against this defense, and those turnovers turn into Johnson grabbing the ball and pushing it himself, which feeds all three columns.

At -103 I'm paying close to even on a player whose output has run well above this line and whose minutes are set to go up.

What beats it: Amen Thompson is the defender Houston will put on him, and Thompson can take away his drives. Houston grabbed 17 offensive rebounds against Dallas, so defensive boards may be harder to come by, and another round of early fouls would sink it.
