The read

Cleveland plays its home opener two nights after blowing a 29-point lead in Philadelphia. Brooklyn plays its first road game after a home loss to a short-handed Charlotte. Both teams are 0-1, but they got there very differently.

I'm not reading much into the Philly collapse. Cleveland lost by 8 on the road to a 2-0 team with Maxey, Embiid, Jaylen Brown and LeBron, on a night it went 7-of-29 from three and turned it over 21 times. Neither the big first half nor the second-half fade is who this team is, and those missed threes aren't owed back tonight. The schedule is a wash: Brooklyn has had two days off and Cleveland one, at home. Nobody on the injury report has played yet, so both rotations should look like they did in the openers.

The backcourt matters most. Harden and Mitchell against Dëmin and Ellis is a wide gap. Dëmin went 2-of-10 and 0-of-5 from deep, and Ellis took seven shots in 34 minutes. Brooklyn's offense ran through Randle and Porter Jr., and Randle's 33 on 11-of-18 was a good night, not one to expect every time. Even so, Brooklyn lost at home to a Charlotte team that was missing Knueppel, Coby White, Grant Williams and Boswell and shot 15-of-48 from three.

Sharpe is the other pressure point. Sharpe picked up a second foul at 7:28 of the first quarter on Wednesday, Wagner came in, and Charlotte went on an 11-1 run. Allen and Mobley make foul trouble inside more likely.

Brooklyn's best way to cover is turnovers. Harden, Mitchell and Watson combined for 16 of Cleveland's 21, and Watson is still new. Cleveland's bench was cold too: Tyson 1-of-6, Hezonja 5-of-13, Merrill 2-of-5. But Brooklyn gave it away 22 times against Charlotte, and Cleveland's length is a tougher test for young ballhandlers.

At 10.5, I think the talent gap is big enough. It's a lean, not a hammer: each team has played one game, and the starting lineups are projected, not confirmed. I'll take Cleveland.

Sharpe grabbed eight rebounds in 30 minutes against Charlotte on a night the Hornets missed 52 shots. That was a lot of chances, and he still finished under this number. Tonight he's across from Allen and Mobley, two of the better rebounding bigs in the league, and Cleveland's wings rebound too. Tyson had six in 24 minutes Thursday.

The bigger problem is minutes. On Wednesday he picked up his second foul with 7:28 left in the first quarter, and Wagner played the next stretch. Allen rolling hard to the rim and Mobley attacking off the dribble make an early whistle more likely tonight. Brooklyn also starts its first back-to-back here, so Fernández has reason to give Wagner and Clowney some frontcourt minutes.

I have Cleveland winning by double digits. In a lopsided fourth quarter, the trailing team's starting center usually spends a lot of it on the bench.

What beats this is a cold shooting night from Cleveland. They missed 48 shots in Philadelphia, and a game full of long rebounds gives him more chances. If he stays out of foul trouble and plays 32 minutes or more, nine is reachable. At plus money with this frontcourt across from him, I'll take the under.

    Cleveland Cavaliers

Harden had five assists in Philadelphia, and I don't think this matchup holds him there. He runs Cleveland's offense, and on Thursday the players he was passing to went cold: Watson was 2-of-7, Tyson 1-of-6, Merrill 2-of-5 and Hezonja 5-of-13. I'm not betting on those misses coming back. I'm betting on the defense he's facing.

Charlotte took 48 threes and 93 shots against Brooklyn on Wednesday while missing Knueppel, Coby White, Grant Williams and Boswell. Cleveland took only 29 threes in Philly. If Brooklyn's defense gives up open looks like that again, Harden gets more catch-and-shoot passes to his shooters. Dëmin and Ellis won't keep him out of the paint for long, and with Allen and Mobley rolling to the rim he has two lob targets on every pick-and-roll. Brooklyn also turned it over 22 times, and those turn into fast breaks with Harden pushing the ball ahead.

His six turnovers were sloppy, and they also show how much the offense ran through him. Cleveland's second unit has nobody else who organizes it, so that usage stays.

What beats it is the spread. If Cleveland is up 20 after three quarters, Harden sits the fourth and has to reach seven in about 30 minutes. Another cold night from the wings would also leave him short. I'll take the over at -118.
