The read
Sacramento hosts its home opener Friday night against a Portland team that just beat Phoenix by 41, and the Kings are getting double digits after the Clippers beat them by 25. Those two scores are why this number looks the way it does, and they're the least useful thing about this game.
Portland's opener was a shooting night: 19-for-47 from three against a Phoenix team that went 6-for-32. It was 43-12 after one quarter, Damian Lillard played 24 minutes, Ja Morant 23, and the rest was a scrimmage. Sacramento's loss had its own cold streaks: Darius Acuff Jr. went 0-for-7 from three, Keegan Murray 1-for-8, and the team 16-for-28 at the line. Nobody's owed makes tonight, but one bad night shouldn't lower what you expect from Murray either.
Portland is the better team, and the depth is real. Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson come off the bench, and Robert Williams III backs up Donovan Clingan. With Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell out, Precious Achiuwa is the Kings' center whenever Domantas Sabonis sits. Those minutes, and the glass, are where Portland builds a margin.
But the one real change since Wednesday goes Sacramento's way: Malik Monk is back. Acuff was forced into 24 shots as a rookie. Monk takes some of that creation off Zach LaVine's plate and cuts into the Emanuel Sharp, Daeqwon Plowden and Nique Clifford minutes where the Kings bled. Portland is still without Shaedon Sharpe, and its depth is heavy on guards who overlap more than they stack.
Everything else is a wash. Both teams had a day off, every other absence was in the number from the open, and pace widens outcomes on both sides of 10.5 alike.
Laying double digits on the road asks Portland to be a tier above, and the loudest evidence for that is one shooting night each way. I'll take the points. If Acuff is truly this overmatched and the non-Sabonis minutes fall apart, Portland can run away with it, so this is a lean, not a hammer. Check the final injury report before tip. A late scratch of Lillard or Morant matters more than anything here.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
POR won last season's series 4-0
4-0Portland swept Sacramento 4-0 last season, winning by 6.3 a game. That is four meetings, a small set, and tonight is the first this season. Portland is without Shaedon Sharpe. Last season's sweep is useful background for this game, though rosters and form have moved since then.
REPLACEMENT
Shaedon Sharpe is OUT for POR
OUTShaedon Sharpe is out for Portland after right meniscus surgery. Deni Avdija should see more of the ball in Sacramento as a result.
SITUATIONAL

2d bothBoth teams come in on 2 days rest, so the schedule gives neither side an edge.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKDOMANTAS SABONISREBOUNDS OVER 12.5
Sacramento has one real center tonight. Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell are both out, so whenever Domantas Sabonis is on the floor he is the only Kings big going after the ball. Precious Achiuwa covers the minutes behind him. On Wednesday that setup got Sabonis 18 rebounds in 34 minutes against a Clippers frontcourt of Brook Lopez and Isaiah Jackson.
Portland is going to give him plenty of misses. The Blazers shot 94 times in the opener, 47 of them from three, and they did it while winning by 41. Lillard, Morant, Henderson and Camara all shoot without hesitating. Long rebounds off missed threes land near the lane, and in Sacramento's defense that is where Sabonis sits. Portland made 19 threes on Wednesday. A more normal shooting night on the road means more misses, and more misses means more rebounds for him.
I have the Kings staying inside the number, and that matters here. A competitive game keeps Sabonis at his usual 34 minutes instead of sitting him for the fourth quarter.
What beats it is Portland's size. Donovan Clingan and Robert Williams III combined for 17 rebounds, and the Blazers grabbed 16 offensive boards against Phoenix. If Clingan walls Sabonis off and Williams keeps tipping misses back to himself, Sabonis loses the contested ones. A Portland runaway that ends his night early beats it too.
- GARY'S PICKDARIUS ACUFF JR.POINTS UNDER 17.5
Darius Acuff Jr. took 24 shots in his debut because Sacramento had nobody else to run the offense with Malik Monk out. Monk is available tonight, and he only matters when the ball is in his hands. Every possession he runs comes out of Acuff's share. Zach LaVine already took 19 shots on Wednesday, so the rookie is the one who gives back volume.
The matchup won't help him make up for it. Portland can put Toumani Camara or Jrue Holiday on him most of the night, and those are two of the best perimeter defenders he'll face all year. Sidy Cissoko and Vit Krejci bring more length off the bench. Acuff went 5-for-24 and 0-for-7 from three against the Clippers. He doesn't have to shoot that badly again for this to cash. He needs fewer shots and an ordinary rookie night against Holiday and Camara.
What beats it is volume plus makes. If Doug Christie keeps running the offense through Acuff, he gets close to 20 shots again, and if a few threes fall, 18 points is right there. A lopsided game where Sacramento trails late and he starts hunting his own shot gets him there too.
