The read
Two 0-1 teams, each coming off two days of rest, meet at TD Garden for Boston's home opener, and the market calls it close to a coin flip. Celtics -2.5 is the same number that was on the board Wednesday. Boston's price drifted cheaper Thursday and came right back. The only real move is the total, down from 223.5 to 221.5, which tightens the game for both sides and favors neither.
At a number this small, you're mostly picking a winner. I'd rather hold the team that knows who it is.
The Knicks' starting five of Brunson, Hart, Bridges, Anunoby and Towns is the group that just raised a banner. Their loss to Philadelphia was a bad shooting night, not a warning sign: 11-for-33 from three, 5-for-21 in the third quarter, Brunson 6-for-19, Anunoby 3-for-12 and Bridges 2-for-8. Towns got just 23 minutes because of foul trouble, and Mike Brown admitted the Knicks probably ran Drummond too long filling in. None of that means the shots are due to fall tonight. It means the 0-1 doesn't reveal anything wrong with how this team is built.
Boston is two games into a new look. Jaylen Brown is in Philadelphia, and Paul George and Mitchell Robinson are new. Jordan Walsh is projected to start after playing 13 minutes in the opener, with Hauser, Scheierman and Queta floated as alternatives. Conley sat by coach's decision, and the center minutes are split between Robinson and Queta.
The Detroit loss was noisy in both directions. George went 7-for-12 from three for 38, Tatum went 6-for-23, and a 72–50 lead vanished under a 23–0 run. Don't read character into the collapse, and don't take George's night as the new normal.
What doesn't matter: Devin Carter's absence, which is already in the number, along with the Knecht signing, the ring-box and phishing stories, George's fine, the Tatum–Brown back-and-forth, and Robinson's reunion with New York.
This is a lean, not a hammer. But in a game priced as nearly even, I want the side with the settled rotation. Knicks +2.5.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKJALEN BRUNSONPOINTS OVER 24.5
Jalen Brunson opened the season 6-for-19 against Philadelphia and still scored 21. Tonight's number is 24.5, which is below what he averaged across last season. I think the cold opener is why it landed there.
The game is priced within a field goal. A close game keeps Brunson on the floor late and keeps the ball in his hands in the fourth quarter. He played 34 minutes in the opener and has lived in the mid to high 30s in tight games.
The matchup gives him somewhere to go. Derrick White is the problem defender, and Boston can't keep him on Brunson the whole night. Payton Pritchard played 27 minutes in Detroit, and Brunson will hunt him on switches every time he's out there. Jordan Walsh is only a projected starter after playing 13 minutes in the opener, and Conley sat. Boston is still sorting out its guard rotation behind White, and Brunson punishes that as patiently as anyone in the league.
Bridges and Anunoby went a combined 5-for-20 against Philadelphia. If they stay quiet, more of the offense comes back to Brunson. If they heat up, he's still the one closing.
What beats it: White draws the assignment for long stretches and wins it. Towns stays out of foul trouble and becomes the focus of the offense. The game breaks open and the starters sit. A second straight bad shooting night does it too. Over 24.5 at -114.
- GARY'S PICKJAYSON TATUMREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
Jayson Tatum had four rebounds in 37 minutes at Detroit, and I'm not reading much into it. Duren and Ausar Thompson own the glass against anyone, and Tatum spent that night as a playmaker, finishing with 11 assists while his shot wasn't falling. He averaged more than 10 boards a game last season. The line has him at 8.5 with plus money on the over.
The Knicks miss shots in volume. They went 35-for-94 in the opener, and even on a better night Brunson, Bridges and Anunoby take a lot of contested jumpers. Long rebounds off missed threes go to wings, and Tatum is the wing Boston wants starting the break. The total coming down points the same way: fewer made baskets means more misses to clean up.
Boston splits its center minutes between Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta. Neither played much more than 20 minutes in Detroit, and Robinson had a poor night on the glass. When Boston's big is on the bench or in foul trouble, Tatum is the one who has to finish possessions.
What beats it: New York's crashers. Towns, Hart and Drummond all chase the offensive glass, and Hart in particular takes boards out of a wing's hands. A hot Knicks shooting night shrinks the pool. If Robinson bounces back and grabs everything around the rim, Tatum's share drops. Over 8.5 at +102.
