The read
Both teams had Thursday off after their openers, and they arrive at Kia Center in opposite moods. Minnesota is coming off a 25-point romp in Miami. Orlando is coming off a home loss to Atlanta that slipped away in the fourth quarter. The market's reaction says a lot: Minnesota opened -1.5, and by Friday afternoon the line had flipped to Orlando -1.5, with the total sliding from 237.5 to 234.5.
Nothing about who plays explains that flip. Black, Isaac, Nelson and Penda were already out for Orlando, DiVincenzo was already out for Minnesota, and no rest decisions were reported. The market simply let the air out of a blowout built on shooting. Edwards hit 9 of 17 from three, Minnesota made 21 of 50, and Miami made 8 of 33. That correction is fair, and it's in the number. What's left is a coin-flip game with a point and a half of slack.
In that game, I want the team whose edges look like they travel. Orlando turned it over 20 times against Atlanta and gave up 24 points off those turnovers, with Banchero accounting for six. Minnesota had 11 steals and 31 points off turnovers in Miami, including four steals from Kuminga and three from McDaniels. Without Anthony Black, Orlando is thinner on ball-handlers. Depth leans Minnesota too: Dosunmu scored 16 off the bench, while Orlando leaned on Banchero for 41 minutes and got nothing from Cain in 14.
Orlando's best night shouldn't be the baseline, either. Banchero shot 10 of 12 and Carter 8 of 10, and the Magic still lost.
The worry is fouls. Minnesota committed 26 in Miami, and Gobert, McDaniels, Kuminga and Ball each finished with four. Orlando lived at the line against Atlanta, going 30 of 39. If Banchero and Wagner put Minnesota's starters in foul trouble, this tilts Orlando's way. The lineups are also still projections. That's why this is a lean and not a hammer.
Minnesota +1.5 at -115. A one-point loss still cashes.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKPAOLO BANCHEROPOINTS OVER 22.5
Orlando's offense runs through one player right now, and tonight he has even less help. Anthony Black is out with the ankle sprain, Jonathan Isaac is out, and Jevon Carter never left the bench on opening night. In Sean Sweeney's first game, Banchero played 41 minutes, took 12 shots from the field and 16 at the line, and handed out 10 assists. Suggs went 2 of 8 and Bane went 5 of 15. When the guards miss, the ball goes back to Banchero, and I expect the same tonight.
The matchup helps the free throw side of his night. Minnesota committed 26 fouls in Miami, and Miami got to the line 26 times. Gobert, McDaniels, Kuminga and Ball each finished with four. Banchero plays through contact, and a Minnesota team that reaches will keep sending him to the line.
This line sits right on what he averaged last season, when he had more help around him. I don't need another 35. I need the heavy minutes and the trips to the line to hold up.
What beats it is McDaniels. He's long enough to make Banchero fight for every catch, and Gobert behind him takes away the easy finish. Banchero also turned it over six times on opening night, and if Minnesota's hands end his possessions before he gets a shot up, his volume dries up. A Minnesota blowout that sits him early would do it too. The total sliding to 234.5 says the market expects a slower night. I'll take the volume at -104.
- GARY'S PICKJONATHAN KUMINGAREBOUNDS UNDER 5.5
Minnesota's rebounds already have owners. In Miami, Gobert grabbed 15, Edwards grabbed 10 from the guard spot, McDaniels added 8, and Dosunmu chased down three offensive boards off the bench. Kuminga played 30 minutes and finished with one. That fits his job in this lineup. He's the slasher and the hands in the passing lanes, with four steals in the opener, and he spends his defensive possessions on the perimeter, where the long misses fly over him.
Orlando won't hand over the glass either. Banchero, Carter, Wagner and Bitadze put real size on the floor, and Carter's job is to keep Gobert off the ball, which drops the misses into a crowd. Kuminga also finished with four fouls in Miami. Another night like that trims his minutes, and fewer minutes means fewer chances.
Last season he lived around five boards a night. The line asks for six, in a role that sends fewer rebounds his way.
What beats it is Gobert in foul trouble. If Gobert sits, Kuminga slides into a bigger frontcourt role and the boards start coming to him. Orlando's cold shooting is the other risk. The Magic went 13 of 40 from three on opening night, and misses like that produce long caroms that land with wings. At -135 I'm paying for a role I trust.
