The read
Chase Center hosts the Warriors' home opener Friday night. Memphis rolls in off a blowout win, and Golden State is still wearing a blowout loss from Los Angeles. Both results are louder than they are useful.
Start with the Warriors' 127–105 loss at the Lakers. Golden State trailed 102–68 after three, Steve Kerr cleared the bench early in the fourth, and Stephen Curry logged just 21 minutes. The Warriors went 8-of-36 from three while the Lakers made 46 of 81 shots. That's a cold night plus a quarter of garbage time, not a verdict.
Memphis's 123–103 win over Utah is just as inflated. Ty Jerome scored 45 on 17-of-25 shooting, a night nobody repeats on schedule. It came against a Jazz team missing Jusuf Nurkic, Tony Bradley, Blake Hinson and Trey Alexander. The repeatable part was the possession game: 15 offensive rebounds to Utah's 5, plus 18 Jazz turnovers.
Rest is even, with both teams on one day off. Jimmy Butler III, Moses Moody, Kristaps Porziņģis and Charles Bassey all missed the opener too, so they're already in the number.
What has actually changed favors Golden State. Brandin Podziemski moved to Probable and is projected to start, taking the spot De'Anthony Melton filled scoreless on Wednesday. Memphis likely loses starter Cedric Coward, who played 28 minutes and carried 19.4% of the team's rebounds. Jerami Grant slides in capably, but the bench gets thinner. Add Curry playing real minutes at home, and the Warriors are the better side at this modest number.
The risk is size. Draymond Green starts at center with Al Horford behind, facing Zach Edey, Cameron Boozer and Quinten Post. If Memphis owns the glass the way it did against Utah, this can flip. Podziemski's back soreness is worth watching too.
This is a lean, not a hammer: Warriors -4.5.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
GSW won last season's series 3-0
3-0Golden State swept Memphis 3-0 last season, winning by 11.7 a game. That is only three meetings. The Warriors are now without Jimmy Butler, Kristaps Porzingis and Moses Moody, so this roster looks different from the one that won those games.
REPLACEMENT
Jimmy Butler is OUT for GSW
OUTJimmy Butler is out for Golden State as he recovers from right ACL surgery. It is a long-term absence, so the market has priced it, but it leaves Golden State thinner on the wing with Moses Moody also out.
Moses Moody is OUT for GSW
OUTMoses Moody is out for Golden State as he recovers from left patellar tendon surgery. He joins Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis on the sideline tonight against Memphis.
Kristaps Porzingis is OUT for GSW
OUTKristaps Porzingis is out for Golden State and is not with the team, with reports that he is weighing his future in basketball. There is no return timeline here.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKCAMERON BOOZERREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
Cameron Boozer led Memphis with 33 minutes in the opener and turned them into 11 rebounds on a night the jumper never showed up: 2 of 15 from the field, 0 of 6 from three. The shot will come and go. The glass work travels.
Tonight the rebounds get easier to find. Cedric Coward is Doubtful with a left wrist sprain, and Coward pulled down seven boards in 28 minutes Wednesday. Those misses need a new home, and Boozer is the forward already carrying the heaviest minutes. On the other side, Golden State starts Draymond Green at center with Al Horford behind, while Charles Bassey and Kristaps Porziņģis are both unavailable. The Warriors also hoist threes in volume and missed 54 shots at the Lakers, which means long rebounds bouncing toward a Memphis frontcourt that beat Utah 15 to 5 on the offensive glass.
The line sits at 8.5 with plus money on the over. Boozer cleared it Wednesday with room to spare, and this matchup is friendlier.
What beats it: Zach Edey vacuuming up the defensive boards in the minutes the two share, foul trouble against a Warriors team that cuts and drives constantly, or a lopsided fourth quarter that sends the Memphis starters to the bench early. Green is also a sharp box-out defender who makes every board a fight.
- GARY'S PICKJERAMI GRANTPOINTS OVER 14.5
Jerami Grant came off the bench Wednesday and still scored 15 in 24 minutes: 4 of 9 from the field, two threes, five free throws. Tonight the role grows. Cedric Coward is Doubtful with a left wrist sprain, and the projected lineup has Grant starting at small forward in Coward's place. More minutes for a veteran scorer who already gets shots up is the cleanest path to an over.
The matchup helps. Golden State's wing depth is thin with Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody out, which leaves Yaxel Lendeborg, a rookie, and Gui Santos to chase Grant, while Draymond Green is tied up in the paint with Zach Edey. Grant can rise over smaller defenders and get to the line against a rookie learning NBA whistles. Ty Jerome will run the offense again, and after a 45-point night the Warriors will load up on Jerome, which opens space for the secondary scorer.
The line is 14.5 with the over at plus money, and Grant got there in a bench role.
What beats it: Coward playing through the wrist and Grant staying in the 24-minute range, Jerome and Boozer soaking up the possessions, or a cold night from deep that leaves Grant living on free throws alone.
