Two 1-0 teams, one city, no travel. The Clippers make the short trip to Crypto.com Arena on Friday night, and the Lakers are laying 8.5 in a crosstown game where home court counts for less than usual.
That's the starting point. Neither team flew, both had Thursday off, and the Clippers called this arena home for years. Nearly all of the 8.5 has to come from the Lakers simply being the better team.
The Clippers' injury list looks brutal: Ingram, Beal, Strus, Jordan Miller and Konan Niederhauser are all Out. None of them played Wednesday either. This is the same group that handled Sacramento, and those absences are already in the price.
The Lakers' news came late and mostly cancels out. LaRavia was ruled Out this afternoon after 18 productive minutes in the opener. Sexton makes a debut, but on an expected minutes restriction. That's close to a wash, maybe a slight dent.
Ignore both blowouts. Sacramento shot 8-28 from three. Golden State shot 8-36 without Butler, Porzingis, Moody or Podziemski and got only 21 minutes from Curry. Kessler's 12-12 and Garland's 30 were single nights, and neither carries forward.
The real game: Dončić is the best player on the floor, and with their wings out, the Clippers' half-court offense leans hard on Garland. But Dunn, Jones Jr. and rookie Wagler give them real perimeter defenders. Lopez brings size against Kessler. A bench that scored 53 gives them the depth to keep this within range.
The Lakers are the better team. At 8.5, though, they're priced like a clear tier above in a game with little home edge. The Clippers' absences are already in the number, and the Lakers' late changes don't add to their edge. I'd see it the same way at 8.
This is a lean, not a hammer. Two games against short-handed opponents leave plenty unknown. If you're on a side, it's the Clippers with the points.

This number asks Hachimura to be a featured scorer, and nothing about how the Clippers played Wednesday puts him in that role. Garland is the engine. He took 19 shots in 32 minutes against Sacramento and had the ball in his hands from the opening tip. Behind him the Clippers spread it around: Lopez at 17, Wagler at 15, Dick at 12, Jackson at 13. The bench put up 53. That's an offense that finds points from a lot of places, and Hachimura is one of many.
He got his looks in the opener, 13 shots in 32 minutes, and turned them into 10 points. Even if a few more of those fall, 17.5 needs a big volume night on top of efficient shooting. With Wagler and Dick both earning minutes and shots off the bench, I don't see where the extra attempts come from.
The matchup doesn't help. The Lakers start Thybulle and Ziaire Williams, two long, active wings, and Hachimura spends most of his night against one of them. He isn't a player who creates much off the dribble against length. His points come from spot-ups, cuts and the occasional post touch, and those don't pile up against this group.
What beats it: Garland gets trapped hard enough that the ball keeps swinging to Hachimura, the second unit goes cold and Lue leans on his starters, and Rui hits three or four from deep. A hot night from the arc is the clearest path over. I'll take the number as priced.

Kessler went 12 for 12 and scored 26 against Golden State, and this line is still feeling that game. That night was as good as it gets for him. Golden State was missing Porzingis and Bassey, played Horford only 17 minutes and had no real size to stop the lob. Every one of Kessler's shots was a catch at the rim off a Dončić or Reaves feed, and the Warriors had nobody to meet him there.
The Clippers do. Isaiah Jackson starts and Brook Lopez played 27 minutes off the bench with 11 rebounds. That's two bodies who protect the rim and keep the glass honest. The Clippers won the boards 49 to 42 on Wednesday. Kessler's scoring lives on dunks, putbacks and lobs. Against real size those chances shrink, and he isn't going to make up the difference with a jumper.
The Lakers' rotation shifts in a way that doesn't feed him either. Sexton makes his debut, and he's a guard who looks for his own shot before he looks for the roll man. More touches for Sexton means fewer possessions running through the Dončić pick-and-roll that produced Kessler's big night.
What beats it: Jackson gets into early foul trouble, the Clippers go small with Lopez on the bench, and Dončić runs the lob game over and over against a thin frontcourt. A few offensive rebounds that turn into putbacks would do it too. I think the number is a couple of points too high for this opponent.
