The read

The Spurs play their first Austin game of the season Friday night at Moody Center, coming off an opening loss to Oklahoma City. The Rockets arrive after beating Dallas by 18 in their opener. Both teams play again tomorrow, and San Antonio is laying 5.5.

The matchup that matters is size. San Antonio's projected lineup puts three guards, Fox, Castle and Harper, around Vassell at the four and Wembanyama in the middle. That group shared just 12 minutes in the opener. Houston answers with Smith, Şengün, Durant and Thompson, a big, physical front line that crashes the glass. Wembanyama can erase shots at the rim but can't box out everybody. With Tobias Harris out, the Spurs' extra size on the wing has to come from Champagnie, Keldon Johnson and Barnes. Every second chance Houston gets makes a six-point Spurs win harder to reach.

Fred VanVleet is the swing piece. Houston plans to play VanVleet in only one game of each back-to-back, but VanVleet isn't on the 8:00 PM injury report and is projected to start. That points to VanVleet playing tonight and sitting tomorrow. Even if not, Marcus Smart is a capable starter.

This also isn't Frost Bank Center. Austin sits between the two cities, so part of this number is a home edge the Spurs won't fully get.

Throw out the openers. Houston's blowout came against a Dallas team missing Lively, Aldama, Martin, Howard and Biberovic, and 21 Dallas turnovers did a lot of the work. Wembanyama's 1-of-13 and the Spurs' 10-of-37 from three were one cold night. No makes are owed tonight, but one game doesn't change who these players are either. The flagrants and Eason's ejection don't carry over. Sheppard and Adams being questionable barely matters at this number.

The line says San Antonio is clearly the better team at this site, and I don't see it in this matchup. If anything, the openers should have pushed the market toward Houston, and this number still rates the Spurs too high. It's a lean, not a max play, because one hot Spurs shooting night beats any matchup read. I'll take the points.

    Amen Thompson
    Rebounds over 7.5

    -104 · CASHED · ACTUAL 10

    Houston Rockets

This game runs through size, and Amen Thompson is the Houston player San Antonio's lineup handles worst. The Spurs' projected starters put Fox, Castle and Harper on the floor together with Vassell at the four. That leaves Thompson matched up on the wing against a guard who gives up real size and athleticism. Houston showed in the opener how hard this team wants to crash: 17 offensive rebounds against Dallas, with Thompson finishing at 10 boards in 33 minutes.

The defensive glass matters just as much. San Antonio took 93 shots against Oklahoma City, and 37 of them were threes. Long misses carom away from Wembanyama and Şengün in the paint, and Thompson is usually first to them before pushing the break. Houston scored 29 fast-break points in the opener, and that offense starts with Thompson securing the ball.

The minutes look safe. Houston's back-to-back rest plan named VanVleet and Adams, and Thompson is outside it. With the spread at 5.5, a long blowout in either direction isn't the expected script.

What beats it: Wembanyama and Şengün claiming every board in the paint, foul trouble shortening Thompson's night, or a Spurs shooting night hot enough to cut down the misses. At -104, the price is fair for a player whose role is built around this stat.

    DE'AARON FOXPOINTS UNDER 14.5
    NBASan Antonio Spurs· -114

    De'Aaron Fox
    Points under 14.5

    -114 · LOST · ACTUAL 19

    San Antonio Spurs

De'Aaron Fox's scoring depends on how many shots are left after Castle, Harper and Wembanyama get theirs, and in the opener that was nine. Fox went 6 of 9 for 14 in 32 minutes. That was an efficient line, and it still landed under this number. With three ballhandlers in the starting group, Fox spent much of that game setting others up and finished with seven assists, while Castle took 21 shots and Harper took 17.

Houston is a poor matchup for that volume to grow. Amen Thompson and Marcus Smart are two of the better point-of-attack defenders in the league, and Fox does most of the scoring by getting downhill. Behind that first line, Smith, Şengün and Durant's length wait at the rim. Fox isn't a volume three-point shooter, so there is little outside scoring to fall back on when the paint closes.

Wembanyama is due a bigger share after a 1 of 13 night, and San Antonio will want to run more offense through the middle. Those touches come from the guards, and Fox, who had the lowest shot volume of the three in the opener, is the one most likely to get squeezed.

What beats it: a free-throw heavy night, since the Spurs got to the line 25 times in the opener and Fox draws contact, or a tight fourth quarter where the ball goes to Fox to close. At -114, the price is reasonable for a line set right at Fox's opener total.
