The read
Two teams playing their second game of the season meet at Kaseya Center, and the line barely leans: Detroit -1.5 on the road. At that number this is really a question of who wins tonight. The half point only matters on a one-point Detroit win.
Start with what the box scores are shouting, because most of it is noise. In Miami's 131-106 loss to Minnesota, the Timberwolves hit 21-50 from three while the Heat went 8-33. Miami trailed 99-81 entering the fourth, and Giannis Antetokounmpo's night ended with 7:07 left as reserves played it out. Tim Hardaway Jr. went 1-7 from deep and Nikola Jovic 2-8 from the field. That's a cold night, not a verdict.
Detroit's 121-113 win over Boston looks great, but less of it carries over than it seems. The Pistons came back from 22 down on a 23-0 run. Javonte Green scored all 19 of his points after halftime on 5-8 from three, and Duncan Robinson poured in 15 in the fourth. Green and Robinson made 10 of Detroit's 15 threes, and Detroit went 28-32 at the line to Boston's 16-21. Hot second halves don't repeat on command.
The schedule is a wash. Detroit had two days off and Miami one, both normal rest, and tonight is the front end of Miami's back-to-back, so fatigue isn't in play. Taurean Prince's return adds depth to a Detroit rotation that already went 11 deep.
What matters: neither team lists a single injury, and the best player on the floor is at home. Giannis put up 35 on 13-19 with 14 free-throw attempts in the debut. Miami's real worries are the glass, where Minnesota won the offensive boards 17-4 and Detroit grabbed 14 against Boston with Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson crashing. The Heat also showed thin three-point volume and 18 turnovers on a roster with nine newcomers. Those problems could stick, but one game doesn't prove them.
The market already rates Detroit a few points better on a neutral floor. Nothing reliable from opening week says to push that further, and the two loudest results flatter Detroit and undersell Miami. I'll take the healthy home team with the best player on the floor plus the point and a half, and size it small. It's a lean, not a hammer.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
MIA won last season's series 2-1
2-1Miami won last season's series 2-1, by 4.7 a game across 3 meetings. Detroit comes in with a day more rest tonight, which offsets some of that history.
SITUATIONAL
DET on 3d, MIA on 2d
3d vs 2dDetroit has one more day of rest than Miami, a small edge for the road team. Miami won last season's series 2-1, so the rest gap pushes a little against the home side.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKBAM ADEBAYOPOINTS UNDER 16.5
Bam Adebayo points, Under 16.5 at -105.
This number is built on the version of Bam who averaged 19.9 a night last season as the first option in Miami. He isn't that player anymore. Giannis Antetokounmpo arrived and took over the offense in his first game: 35 points on 13-19 shooting with 14 trips to the line in 30 minutes. Bam got 12 shots in 31 minutes and scored 15. Those were starter's minutes in a game where the only thing that cut them short was Minnesota pulling away late. That is the role now, a big who screens, passes from the elbow and cleans up around a star who wants the paint.
The matchup squeezes him further. Jalen Duren is a strong, physical body who won't give Bam easy position near the rim, and Ausar Thompson roams as a help defender who blows up the dribble handoffs Bam likes to run. Detroit also crashes the offensive glass hard (14 offensive boards against Boston), which pulls Bam toward rebounding position instead of leaking out for the easy transition buckets that pad a scoring line. With Giannis, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins all wanting touches, his path to 17 runs through efficiency on a small number of shots.
What beats it: Bam stepping out and hitting three or four from deep, which he did at times last season. Giannis picking up early fouls against a Detroit team that fouled 22 times on opening night, which would hand Bam the offense for stretches. Or Detroit sending Miami to the line often enough that a couple of free throws push a 15 into an 18. At close to even money on a player whose role just got smaller, I'll take the under.
- GARY'S PICKDAVION MITCHELLASSISTS OVER 6.5
Davion Mitchell assists, Over 6.5 at +120.
Mitchell handed out 11 assists in 33 minutes on opening night, and he did it on a night Miami shot 8-33 from three. Hardaway went 1-7 from deep, Jovic 2-8 from the field, and the Heat still got double digits out of their point guard. The passing was there. The shots just didn't fall. A normal shooting night from that group, plus Klay Thompson getting more than 16 minutes, turns a lot of those wide open kickouts into made baskets.
The new roster makes his job simple. Giannis is a finisher who wants the ball moving toward the rim, and Mitchell is the guard tasked with getting it there in rhythm. Bam is a trailer and short roll target who catches and scores. Detroit's defense gave Boston 42 three point attempts and 17 makes on Tuesday, so open looks on the perimeter should be there for whoever Mitchell finds. A line priced near his season average undersells his role on this team, and plus money is a good price for that.
What beats it: Ausar Thompson guarding him for long stretches and pressuring the ball, which could push the offense into Giannis's hands at the top. Miami's turnover problem showing up again; they gave it away 18 times against Minnesota. Spoelstra trimming Mitchell's minutes while sorting out nine newcomers, or the Heat shooters going cold again. I like the role and the price enough to take the plus number.
