The read

Indiana opens its home building tonight with Tyrese Haliburton back in front of the home crowd, and Dallas walks in off a 128–110 beating in Houston. The story writes itself for the Pacers, and that's exactly why this number deserves a hard look.

The line was first posted at Pacers -6.5 on Thursday, after both openers were already in the books. It climbed to -7.5 Friday morning with no new injury news to explain it, and the market has been easing off since. The Indiana moneyline came back from -280 to -260.

Indiana's real edges were all priced in at 6.5. With Dereck Lively II out, Dallas is thin up front. Houston beat them 17–8 on the offensive glass, and Ivica Zubac just pulled down 15 rebounds. Kyrie Irving played 23:45 in the opener and is still on managed minutes. Dallas's 21 turnovers are the kind Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard punish in transition. That's the case for Indiana, and it's a fair one.

But covering 7.5 means winning by 8 or more, and that's where Indiana's depth gets tested. T.J. McConnell is out, Aaron Nesmith is questionable and hasn't played, and Ben Sheppard is questionable too. In New Orleans, four Pacers starters logged 34 or 35 minutes. The Pelicans still won the second quarter 35–18, outrebounded Indiana 21–6 in it, and led 66–56 at the half before Haliburton closed it out.

Dallas's loss was mostly one quarter. They lost the second 38–12, going 0-for-14 from three with eight turnovers, and garbage time followed with Houston up 37. Meanwhile, Cooper Flagg went for 32 on 10-of-17 shooting and 11-of-13 at the line. That's a creator who can carry the minutes when Irving sits.

The price is -118, so this is a lean, not a hammer. If Nesmith is active or Irving is ruled out before tip, I'd pass. As it stands, I'll take the points with Dallas.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • DAL won last season's series 2-0

    2-0

Dallas won both meetings last season, by 3 a game. Two close games is a very small sample. Both teams come in on 2 days rest, and both are missing rotation players.

REPLACEMENT

  • Santi Aldama is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Dallas is without Santi Aldama tonight in Indiana as he recovers from right knee surgery. Dereck Lively II is also out, which thins the Dallas frontcourt and pushes more minutes to whoever is left.

  • T.J. McConnell is OUT for IND

    OUT

T.J. McConnell is out for Indiana with a right hamstring strain, which takes a ball-handler out of the second unit against Dallas.

  • Johnny Furphy is OUT for IND

    OUT

Johnny Furphy is out for Indiana as he recovers from a torn right ACL. This is a long-term absence the market has already priced in.

  • Dereck Lively II is OUT for DAL

    OUT

Dereck Lively II is out for Dallas after right foot surgery. With Santi Aldama also out, Dallas is thin at center in Indiana tonight.

SITUATIONAL

  • Both sides on 2 days rest

    2d both

Both teams come in on 2 days rest, so the schedule gives neither side an edge.

    -108 · LOST · ACTUAL 11

    Indiana Pacers

Ivica Zubac over 11.5 rebounds at -108.

The glass is the clearest mismatch in this game. Dallas is without Dereck Lively II, and Daniel Gafford played 22 minutes in Houston and came away with three rebounds. The Rockets beat the Mavericks 17 to 8 on the offensive boards and 42 to 33 overall. Behind Gafford, the Dallas size is Morez Johnson for 14 minutes and Moussa Cisse for three. That is very little resistance for a center who wins with position and hands.

Zubac opened the season with 15 rebounds in about 34 minutes at New Orleans, and that came on a night when the Pelicans owned the second quarter on the boards. The minutes are what make this work. Indiana's frontcourt behind Zubac is thin: Jay Huff sat by coach's decision, Larry Nance Jr. got five minutes, and with T.J. McConnell out and Aaron Nesmith questionable, the starters are carrying a heavy load. Four Pacers starters logged 34 or 35 minutes in the opener. Zubac at 32 minutes against this frontline is a different proposition than the 23 to 26 minute version from late last season.

Dallas also leaves plenty of misses to clean up. The Mavericks shot 4-for-19 in one quarter in Houston, went 0-for-14 from three in that stretch, and turned it over 21 times. With Kyrie Irving on managed minutes, more possessions run through younger hands, and that means more forced looks late in the clock. The total climbing from 235.5 to 239.5 points to more possessions, and more possessions means more rebounds to go around.

What beats it: early foul trouble, or Indiana going small with Obi Toppin and Pascal Siakam for long stretches to match a Dallas lineup spread with shooters. A sharp shooting night from the Mavericks also shrinks the pool of available boards.

    KYRIE IRVINGPOINTS UNDER 19.5
    NBADallas Mavericks· -108

    Kyrie Irving
    Points under 19.5

    -108 · LOST · ACTUAL 24

    Dallas Mavericks

Kyrie Irving under 19.5 points at -108.

Irving's minutes are the whole story here. Dallas is bringing Irving along slowly, and the opener showed the shape of the plan: 23:45 total, split 7:28, 6:35, 8:39 and 1:03 across the four quarters. Irving said the medical and coaching staffs have the minutes lined up and the job is to be patient. Nothing reported today suggests the plan has loosened for game two.

Irving was efficient in Houston, 6-for-9 from the field, and still finished with 15. Getting to 20 inside a managed workload asks for a hot shooting night plus a steady trip to the line, and this number is priced closer to a full-minutes Irving.

The shots are spread out on this roster, too. Cooper Flagg took 17 shots and 13 free throws in Houston and scored 23 after halftime. Marcus Sasser put up 17 off the bench, and Naji Marshall added 16 with six assists. When Irving is on the floor, there are three or four other Mavericks looking to score. Indiana's backcourt also makes Irving work for every touch. Andrew Nembhard is a strong point-of-attack defender, and Irving turned it over four times in under 24 minutes against Houston's pressure.

What beats it: a close game. I have Dallas with the points, and if the Mavericks keep this within a possession late, Irving's fourth-quarter stint grows well past the single minute played in Houston. Irving can score eight in a closing stretch. A hot start from three or a run of free throws could also get there early. My bet is that the staff's plan caps the total, close game or not.
