The read
Charlotte opens its home schedule Friday night at Spectrum Center. Both teams are 1-0 after road wins Wednesday, and both are on one day's rest. The Hawks are 2.5-point favorites, and that number hasn't moved since Thursday morning.
Charlotte will be without Kon Knueppel, Coby White, Grant Williams and Kylan Boswell. But none of them played in the opener at Brooklyn, and all of it was known before this line went up. Atlanta is missing Mouhamed Gueye and Henri Veesaar, and neither changes its rotation. Everything on the injury report is already in the -2.5.
At a number this small, the question is which team can keep producing for 48 minutes. Without White and Knueppel, Charlotte's offense runs through Dennis Schroder and Brandon Miller. The opener leaned hard on the starters: Miller played 36 minutes, Schroder 35, Moussa Diabate 34 and Naz Reid 33. Behind them, Christian Anderson went scoreless in 13 minutes and Hannes Steinbach didn't get in.
Atlanta has more ways to score. CJ McCollum, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels can all run the offense. Aaron Wiggins earned 32 minutes and public backing from Quin Snyder. Corey Kispert and Dorian Finney-Smith sat by coach's decision, so the Hawks still have depth they haven't used.
Don't read much into Wednesday's box scores. Grayson Allen scored 21 off the bench on 5-for-8 from three, and Charlotte's 110-103 margin depended on it. Alexander-Walker's 31 was the same kind of night on the other side. One game each says almost nothing, and home-opener energy is already in the number.
The risk is fouls. Atlanta committed 30 in Orlando, and Johnson and Luguentz Dort both finished with five. Johnson nearly fouled out before a challenge reversed the call. If that happens again, Charlotte gets free points, and the Hawks' best player sits through the stretch that decides a 2.5-point game. Still, that's one game of foul counts, not a pattern.
Atlanta only needs to win by three. The deeper team with more creators is the better side at this number.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
CHA won last season's series 3-1
3-1Charlotte won last season's series 3-1, but only by 3.5 a game, so these were close games. The Hornets are missing Coby White, Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams tonight, which makes last season's edge harder to lean on.
REPLACEMENT
Coby White is OUT for CHA
OUTCoby White is out for Charlotte with a left calf strain. With Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams also out, the Hornets' rotation is badly short, which is the clearest reason Brandon Miller's points line sits well above his average from last season.
Henri Veesaar is OUT for ATL
OUTAtlanta is without Henri Veesaar, who tore his right ACL. This is a long absence, so the rotation behind him is already set and the market has had time to adjust.
Kon Knueppel is OUT for CHA
OUTKon Knueppel is out for Charlotte with a left hamstring strain. Alongside Coby White and Grant Williams, that is a lot of missing scoring, and more of the ball goes to Brandon Miller.
Grant Williams is OUT for CHA
OUTGrant Williams is out for Charlotte with a right hamstring strain, one of four Hornets out tonight against Atlanta.
Kylan Boswell is OUT for CHA
OUTCharlotte is without Kylan Boswell after right knee surgery. He is one of several Hornets out tonight, along with Coby White, Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams.
Mouhamed Gueye is OUT for ATL
OUTAtlanta is without Mouhamed Gueye after surgery on a left foot fracture. With Henri Veesaar also out, Atlanta's depth up front is short in Charlotte tonight.
SITUATIONAL

2- GARY'S PICKBRANDON MILLERPOINTS UNDER 24.5
Brandon Miller's points line sits at 24.5, and I'm taking the under at -110.
The case for the over is easy to see. Coby White and Kon Knueppel are both out, so Charlotte needs Miller to carry more of the scoring, and Miller played 36 minutes in Brooklyn. That role is real. Even so, Miller averaged 20.1 points last season, and the back end of that season ran mostly in the high teens and low 20s. In the opener, with all that extra room, Miller scored 18.
The matchup makes the number harder. Atlanta can put Dyson Daniels on Miller and use Luguentz Dort as the second option. Those are two of the best wing defenders in the league, and Daniels had five steals in Orlando. Charlotte's offense also isn't built entirely around Miller. Dennis Schroder runs it, Naz Reid and Moussa Diabate get touches inside, and Grayson Allen took real shots off the bench. The shots get spread around.
A 24.5 line asks for a big night from a scorer who mostly lives below it, against the best defensive pairing Charlotte will see in a while.
What beats it is free throws. The Hawks committed 30 fouls in Orlando. If that carries over and Miller lives at the line, or hits five or six threes, this goes over. Overtime would hurt too.
- GARY'S PICKNAZ REIDASSISTS UNDER 3.5
Naz Reid's assists line is 3.5, and I'll take the under at -130.
Reid's opener was the best passing night of the career: seven assists, matching a career high. That game is why this line sits at 3.5. Last season, in a bench role, Reid averaged 2.2 assists in 26 minutes. One game in a new uniform doesn't change who Reid is as a passer.
The minutes will be there. Reid played 33 in Brooklyn and starts again tonight. The ball belongs to Schroder, though. Schroder handled the decisive fourth-quarter stretch in Brooklyn and finished with six assists. Miller and Allen get the next touches. Reid's job in this offense is spacing the floor as a stretch big and finishing plays, which produces points and rebounds far more often than assists.
Atlanta's defense pushes the same direction. Daniels will pressure the ball, and Onyeka Okongwu and Jalen Johnson can switch onto bigs on the perimeter. That keeps Charlotte's offense in Schroder's hands.
What beats it is Charlotte running more offense through Reid at the elbow and the top of the key, the way it did at times in Brooklyn. If Reid is the hub again and Allen keeps knocking down threes off those passes, four assists comes quickly.
