The read

Opening night at FedExForum brings two top-three picks making their debuts and Jaren Jackson Jr. playing in Memphis in a visiting uniform, and the books have priced it like a coin flip. At -1.5, the Grizzlies only have to win their home opener by two, and the measured matchup data supports that.

It starts with the whistle. Cameron Boozer drew 24 free-throw attempts against 34 field-goal attempts in the preseason, the highest rate among rookies with real volume. Jackson Jr. is Utah's first option at center behind Jaxson Hayes, and in Utah's preseason finale Jackson Jr. picked up five fouls in about 20 minutes, two of them within 10 seconds. Memphis has built its offense around Zach Edey's deep catches and offensive rebounding, so every foul on Jackson Jr. narrows what Utah can put on the floor inside. The second factor is ball security. Memphis forced 24 turnovers with 14 steals in its finale. Utah gave it away 19 times at Phoenix and ranked 29th in preseason assist rate, the biggest drop in the league from last season. Utah has also finished last in transition points allowed in each of the past three seasons, so live-ball turnovers matter more here than usual. The Boozer, Ty Jerome and Cedric Coward trio also scored better than 130 points per 100 possessions together in the preseason.

There are real risks. Memphis committed 30 fouls and 19 turnovers of its own against Charlotte, and Utah got to the line 37 times in its finale, so the Grizzlies could hand back what their defense creates. Keyonte George, Lauri Markkanen and Jackson Jr. have longer scoring track records than anyone Memphis starts, and Edey's minutes are being watched after only 11 games last season, which means some stretches without the size advantage. But the market has already priced Utah's scoring talent, which is why this line sits near pick'em. The real question is whether the home team, with a rookie who lives at the line and a defense that forces turnovers, can win by two against an opponent whose measured weaknesses are ball movement, transition defense and frontcourt fouls. Those weaknesses line up directly with what Memphis does well. I'll lay the 1.5.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • UTA and MEM split last season 2-2

    2-2

Utah and Memphis split four games last season, so the series offers no edge. Memphis may be without Stewart, and Markkanen's line sits well below his average from last season. Tonight's roster news matters more than the history.

REPLACEMENT

  • Isaiah Stewart is Day-To-Day for MEM

    Day-To-Day

Stewart is day-to-day with an ankle injury from Oct 5 and looks likely to miss the opener. That thins Memphis' frontcourt against Utah.

SITUATIONAL

  • Season opener for both teams

    OPENER

Both teams open tonight, so rest is even. No schedule edge either way.

    Utah Jazz

Jaren Jackson Jr. comes back to the building where he made his name, and he walks into the toughest matchup on the board for his scoring line. He starts at the four next to Jaxson Hayes, which puts him on Cameron Boozer, the rookie who lived at the free-throw line all preseason. When Hayes sits, Jackson slides to the five and has to handle Zach Edey's deep catches and work on the offensive glass. Both jobs draw fouls, and Jackson already showed the pattern at Phoenix: five fouls in about 20 minutes, the last two within ten seconds of each other, and his night was over. A third foul before halftime sends him to the bench, and his scoring goes with him.

The shots are also split more ways now. Keyonte George just signed a five-year, $157.5 million extension and is running the offense, Lauri Markkanen is still the first scoring option, and Darryn Peterson is sharing the creation duties with George. Utah's ball movement was among the worst in the league in preseason, so possessions end in the hands of the guards and Markkanen as often as they end with Jackson. When he does attack the paint, Edey is waiting at the rim. Jackson made only three regular-season appearances for Utah after the trade, so he is still finding his spots in this offense. This line asks for his full-season scoring average in a game where his minutes are the most exposed of anyone on the floor.

What beats it is a clean whistle and 32 minutes, or a night where he stays outside and makes his threes instead of banging inside. Memphis also fouled 30 times against Charlotte. If the Grizzlies send him to the line repeatedly, he can get to this number quickly.

    Ty Jerome
    Points under 20.5

    -117 · LOST · ACTUAL 45

    Memphis Grizzlies

This number is priced off last season's Ty Jerome, a bench scorer who put up big totals in short minutes. Tuomas Iisalo has now made him the starting point guard and wants him to run the offense. The coach called it a balancing act between creating his own shot and getting teammates involved. There are a lot more teammates to involve. Cameron Boozer handles the ball as a second playmaker at power forward, Cedric Coward is being pushed to look for his own offense, Zach Edey wants deep post touches, and Jerami Grant is back in the rotation off the bench. At 20.5, Jerome would have to be the top scorer on that roster on opening night.

The matchup doesn't help him. The Utah backcourt is expected to have the edge over the Memphis guards, and the Jazz have shown better effort and communication on switches throughout camp. Jerome's best preseason night, 17 points in 22 minutes against Charlotte, still finished under this number, and he needed two late threes to get there. In a home opener where the Grizzlies want to show off Boozer and the Boozer to Edey connection, the plays they draw up go inside first.

What beats it is minutes. Behind Jerome the guard group is just Scotty Pippen Jr. and Cam Spencer, so if he plays well past 30 minutes, the extra time can push him over. He also has real range, and Utah has finished last in transition points allowed three seasons running. A few run-outs and pull-up threes would get him there quickly.
