The read

Opening night at Intuit Dome, where a remade Clippers roster debuts against a Pacific Division rival that went 0-5 in preseason. The number is Clippers -4.5, which asks the home side to be only about two points better on a neutral floor. The Clippers' long-known absences were public for weeks before this line went up and are already in the price. The real question is whether the Kings' starting core can hold its own, and the measured evidence says it hasn't. Sacramento was outscored by 33 points in 38 preseason minutes with LaVine and Sabonis on the floor together. The only exhibition where both logged 30 minutes was at San Antonio, where Sacramento trailed 71-37 at halftime, was outrebounded 63-38 and gave up 20 offensive rebounds. Last season this group posted a 111.4 offensive rating against a 121.5 defensive rating.

The one genuinely fresh development cuts against Sacramento. Malik Monk was downgraded to Doubtful roughly 90 minutes before tip. That leaves a bench of Clifford, Sharp, Plowden and Karaban, with Mogbo (10.8 points, 7.0 rebounds in preseason) the only reserve who showed real production. With no healthy natural center behind Sabonis, the backup center minutes go to Achiuwa and Mogbo, who are 6'8" and 6'7", against Lopez and Jackson. The Clippers' second unit has two true centers and veteran ball-handling in Dunn and Pickett. Hunter, projected to start for the Kings, shot 21.1% and went 0-for-9 from three in preseason.

Ball security is the other measured gap. The Clippers cut their turnovers from 22 to 15 to 11 across three exhibitions and finished with 35 assists against 11 giveaways in the Denver win. Wagler had 9 assists against one turnover in 81 minutes. Acuff is 3.5 turnovers per game running Sacramento with no natural backup point guard. The risks are real. The -120 is a premium, the Clippers' preseason margin averaged just +2.3, and the Denver win came after Denver's starters sat the second half. But everything measured points the same way: Sacramento's numbers were at their worst with its best players on the floor, and the fresh absence thins the minutes behind them. I'm paying the juice and laying the points.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • LAC won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

The Clippers won three of four last season, by 16 a game. Tonight they are missing Beal, Ingram, Strus and two depth players, which is a very different team from the one that won those games. The old margin likely overstates their edge.

REPLACEMENT

  • Bradley Beal is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Beal is out for opening night with knee inflammation and no clear timeline. He is one of five Clippers missing, which is why Garland's scoring line is set well above his average from last season.

  • Max Strus is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Strus is out with a plantar fascia injury, the kind that usually needs prolonged rest, so this could run a while. He adds to a long Clippers injury list tonight.

  • Yanic Konan Niederhauser is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Niederhauser is out as he works back from March surgery, and the Clippers are expected to be cautious. It is a depth loss rather than a rotation shock.

  • Brandon Ingram is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Ingram is out, with his recovery timeline unclear after an injury found this summer. Losing a star forward plus Beal and Strus is the main reason Garland's line jumps tonight.

  • Jordan Miller is OUT for LAC

    OUT

Jordan Miller is out with no timeline, after he had a shot at a reserve role in camp. A depth loss on a Clippers roster already missing several rotation players.

SITUATIONAL

  • Season opener for both teams

    OPENER

Both teams open tonight, so rest is even. The Clippers' injury list outweighs anything on the schedule.

    De'Andre Hunter
    Points under 13.5

    -108 · CASHED · ACTUAL 6

    Sacramento Kings

This line asks Hunter to match last season's scoring average in a role that has gotten smaller. Acuff is the focal point now and averaged 17.3 points across four exhibitions with the ball in his hands. LaVine is still taking his shots, Sabonis is the hub at the elbow, and Murray is the other starting forward. That makes Hunter the fifth option in the starting five, and fifth options live on catch-and-shoot looks.

Right now those looks aren't falling. He averaged three points in 17.5 preseason minutes and went 0-for-9 from three. The Clippers' starting wings are Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn, two of the more willing perimeter defenders in this matchup, and Lue opened the week saying this has to be a defense-first group. A spot-up forward with a cold hand doesn't get many clean possessions against that.

The game script points the same direction. I have the Clippers covering, and if Sacramento falls behind, the late-game shots go to LaVine and Acuff hunting a comeback, with Hunter spotting up in the corner.

What beats it: Monk is Doubtful, so there are extra wing minutes to go around, and Hunter is a career shooter who can find his stroke in one night. Three early threes and a long leash would put him over. I'm betting the preseason role and the cold hand carry into opening night.

    Domantas Sabonis
    Rebounds over 12.5

    -124 · CASHED · ACTUAL 18

    Sacramento Kings

Sacramento has no backup center tonight. Raynaud and Cardwell are both out, so the minutes behind Sabonis go to Achiuwa and Mogbo, two undersized forwards. That pushes Sabonis toward a heavy workload, and minutes are the engine of this prop. He's the best defensive rebounder on the floor, and he's the man Sacramento needs back on the glass after the defensive rebounding collapse in the seasons he missed.

The matchup suits him. Lue spent the preseason talking about collective rebounding because his lineup lacks size. Isaiah Jackson is a leaper with a light frame, and Lopez tends to drift to the perimeter. Neither boxes out a strong, wide body like Sabonis. On the other end, the Kings' offense with LaVine and Sabonis together has been ugly, and a cold-shooting team leaves a lot of misses around the rim for the one big who's always there.

What beats it: the San Antonio game, where the Kings were outrebounded 63-38, shows his teammates can leave him on an island. A lopsided Clippers lead could also cost him fourth-quarter minutes, and foul trouble against Jackson's activity would do the same. I'm paying the price because the frontcourt depth chart funnels the minutes and the boards to him.
