The read

Opening night at the Moda Center, and the building is wired for Damian Lillard's return. Phoenix walks into that noise with a familiar core and two and a half points in its pocket. This number asks Portland to win by a full possession in the first regular-season game of a rebuilt team. It has a first-year head coach in Micah Nori and a new backcourt pairing of Lillard and Ja Morant that never started together in preseason. Lillard also played only 22.7 minutes per game in exhibitions on a managed-minutes plan. Phoenix brings back Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and Oso Ighodaro under second-year coach Jordan Ott. Phoenix was the better team on both ends last season: a 115.4 offensive rating against Portland's 114.4, a 113.9 defensive rating against 114.7, and a +1.5 net rating against -0.3. The market has handed Portland roughly two points of credit for pieces that haven't logged a regular-season minute together.

The measured matchup edges point the same way. Portland led the league in turnovers at 16.5 per game, and Phoenix ranked third in forcing them. Portland then opened its most meaningful preseason test at Golden State with seven first-quarter giveaways. Portland ranked 17th on the defensive glass and gave up 10 offensive rebounds in that finale, nine of them before halftime. Phoenix took 40.8 threes per game at 36.1% last season, while Portland allowed 35.8% from deep. High three-point volume against a soft defensive glass is how a road team picks up extra possessions. Depth is the other concern for Portland. Golden State's bench won the first half of the finale 36-7, and with Lillard's minutes held down, more of tonight falls on Portland's second unit.

Phoenix has risks of its own. Booker and Green combined for nine first-half turnovers against Utah, and Phoenix was outshot at the line 37-26 in attempts. Portland's drive-first offense put Lillard on the line for 13-of-13 at Golden State. If Portland wins the free-throw battle by that kind of margin, this ticket is in trouble. Still, I'll take the more continuous team that was better on both ends last season, getting points, against a home side whose biggest measured weakness is giving the ball away to a defense built to take it. A Phoenix win or a Portland win by one or two both cash. Phoenix +2.5.

    Damian Lillard
    Assists under 4.5

    +109 · LOST · ACTUAL 6

    Portland Trail Blazers

Damian Lillard's first regular-season game in a year and a half will get the loudest cheer of the night, and I expect him to look for his shot. I don't expect a playmaker's line. On Monday he said his legs stayed fresh in preseason because he no longer has to bring the ball up, create advantages or beat multiple defenders. That is a 36-year-old describing an off-ball job in an offense that starts Ja Morant next to him and brings Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson off the bench. Micah Nori is running a 10-man rotation, and Lillard averaged 22.7 minutes in his three exhibitions on a plan built to save him for April. Fewer minutes and fewer possessions as the initiator shrink his path to five assists.

The scheme matters too. Blazer's Edge describes an offense where the driving guard collapses the defense, the ball swings, and the second pass creates the shot. Many of Lillard's best possessions in that look end with him spotting up or getting to the line. That is how he scored 23 at Golden State with 13 free throws. Even in the Sacramento game, where Portland moved the ball well, he finished with four assists. Morant is the guard in this backcourt with the ball in his hands for the final read.

What beats it: Phoenix's guards pressure the ball. If Jalen Green and Devin Booker trap Morant, Portland could turn to Lillard as the release valve and run more high pick and roll through him. An opening-night minutes bump would also help, as would Deni Avdija, if he plays, and Toumani Camara knocking down his kickouts. At plus money, I'll take Lillard as a scorer and fade the assist line. Under 4.5 assists.

    DONOVAN CLINGANREBOUNDS UNDER 11.5
    NBAPortland Trail Blazers· +100

    Donovan Clingan
    Rebounds under 11.5

    +100 · CASHED · ACTUAL 7

    Portland Trail Blazers

Donovan Clingan has the size to rebound against anybody. Phoenix is without Mark Williams and starts Oso Ighodaro at center, so the glass looks inviting on paper. But 11.5 asks for a full night of work from a player who averaged 26.8 minutes last season. He now shares the middle with Robert Williams III in a 10-man rotation. Williams has been the loudest voice on rebounding in camp, and he will take his share of the center minutes.

The bigger factor is how Portland plans to rebound. Nori's answer to last season's defensive glass problem is all five players crashing, with guards and wings gang-tackling the ball. Blazer's Edge also notes the drop coverage is gone: Clingan is being pulled out to the perimeter to defend in space. Ighodaro is a screener and passer who will drag him away from the rim, and Phoenix fires a high volume of threes that produce long rebounds. When Clingan is stepped out on a ball handler, those long caroms go to Camara, Holiday and the guards. Every board the team emphasis hands to a guard is one Clingan doesn't collect.

What beats it: if Deni Avdija sits with the ankle, Portland loses a forward who grabs his share and Clingan's chances go up. Foul trouble for Williams would push more minutes Clingan's way. A cold Phoenix shooting night full of short misses at the rim would also help him clear twelve. At even money, the minutes and the scheme both point the same direction. Under 11.5 rebounds.
