The read
Two franchises open new chapters at Capital One Arena tonight. Washington, a team built for the lottery, has added veterans to a young core, while Milwaukee starts a post-Giannis rebuild under a new coach. The book has the Wizards by 4.5, which rates them about two points better on a neutral floor before either team has played a game that counts. That's a lot to lay on a core that has barely shared the floor. Trae Young has five games in a Washington uniform, and Anthony Davis and Deandre Ayton have none. Washington's fifth starter was still unconfirmed hours before tip. Young's preseason went 15, 2 and 11 points, then 1-of-11 with five turnovers in the finale. Washington's four verified exhibitions netted -2: two one-score wins, a one-point loss and a game where it gave up 131 on 57% shooting. Nothing there shows a team ready to win by margin yet.
I'm not dismissing Milwaukee's ugly preseason. The Bucks ranked 28th in offensive rating, 22nd in defensive rating and last in shooting accuracy, and they lost three exhibitions by 15 or more. But those games carried heavy developmental minutes. Tonight's starting five of Ryan Rollins, Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kyle Kuzma and Myles Turner is the most settled group in this game, the same in every projection. Herro shot 51.1% from the field and 56.5% from three in 22 minutes a night. Taylor Jenkins' system produced 94.2 shot attempts per game (3rd), 46.4 threes (3rd) and a 35.9% offensive rebound rate (5th). That much volume gives an underdog more ways to stay within range, even on an average shooting night.
The price supports it. The moneyline at -168/+142 points to a game closer to 4 than 4.5, and Milwaukee's side is carrying the heavier juice at -112, so the half-point looks like the soft spot in this number. On opening night, with no regular-season evidence that Washington's additions fit together, I'll take the points with the team whose starting group is settled and whose shot volume gives it a path to keep this close. Milwaukee +4.5.

The research

HEAD-TO-HEAD
WAS won last season's series 3-1
3-1Washington won three of four last season, but by only 0.3 a game, so these were coin flips that broke one way. Both teams have new stars, Herro in Milwaukee and Davis in Washington. The record overstates how one-sided this series was.
REPLACEMENT
Nate Ament is Day-To-Day for MIL
Day-To-DayAment is day-to-day but expected to make his league debut tonight, though not in line for a big role. A rookie with limited minutes is a thin prop target.
SITUATIONAL
Season opener for both teams
OPENERBoth teams open tonight, so rest is even. New roles for Herro and Davis are the bigger unknown.

2- GARY'S PICKALEXANDRE SARRPOINTS UNDER 13.5
Sarr's 16.3 points a night last season came on a 17 win team where he was one of the first options inside. That team is gone. Tonight he starts at center next to Anthony Davis, with Trae Young running everything and Kyshawn George coming off a preseason where he scored efficiently on every look the offense gave him. Coulibaly starts on the wing, and Deandre Ayton waits on the bench to take the backup center minutes. In this starting five, Sarr is the fifth option, and the second unit has Tre Johnson, Middleton and Ayton all looking for shots.
The tail end of last season already showed what this role looks like. He was playing low twenties minutes and scoring in single digits about as often as he reached double figures. His preseason finale went 12 points and 9 rebounds next to Davis, which is roughly what I expect from him tonight. The matchup doesn't help him either. Myles Turner protects the rim at the other end, Milwaukee blocked shots well all preseason, and Turner's range drags Sarr out to the arc on defense, which costs him the energy and positioning he uses for putbacks.
He gets there if Davis picks up early fouls or Washington limits Davis on opening night, which would push the interior touches to Sarr. Milwaukee's weak transition defense could also hand him a few rim runs, and a couple of made threes would change the math. At close to even money, I'll take the under on the big man who now has the most company in the paint.
- GARY'S PICKANTHONY DAVISREBOUNDS UNDER 11.5
Twelve rebounds is a number for a Davis who is the only big on the floor. Tonight he plays the four next to Sarr, a seven footer who pulled down 7.4 a game last season, and Ayton follows them off the bench. Three bigs will be splitting the defensive glass, and Sarr will be standing in the spots where a lot of Davis's boards came from in Dallas.
Milwaukee also takes rebounds away by design. Taylor Jenkins sends bodies to the offensive glass, the Bucks finished fifth in the preseason at it, and they grabbed 19 offensive boards in their finale at Indiana. Each of those is a miss Davis doesn't get. Then there's the matchup: Kuzma and Turner both drift outside, and Washington's preseason defense had Davis switching and helping on the perimeter. That puts him farther from the rim on a lot of possessions than a twelve rebound night needs. It's also the opener, he played 27 minutes in the exhibition finale, and Washington has every reason to keep his workload reasonable with a long season ahead.
The risk is volume. Milwaukee puts up a huge number of threes and was the worst shooting team in the preseason, so there will be plenty of long misses, and Davis showed his ceiling last season with games of 16 and 17. If Kel'el Ware's effort issues keep him on the bench and the Bucks play small, Davis could clean up anyway. I'll pay the juice and bet that sharing the glass with Sarr and Ayton keeps him short of twelve.
