The read

Opening night at Crypto.com Arena. A rebuilt Lakers team led by Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves raises the curtain against Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and a Golden State team that came down the coast short-handed. It's the first real look at both rosters, and the number asks Los Angeles to win by seven.

That's more than the Lakers have earned so far. Last season's net ratings had these franchises about two points apart: Lakers +1.5, Warriors -0.6. A normal home edge doesn't stretch that to 6.5. The -122 price on the Lakers side makes the real ask closer to 7. The line already sits well above where last year's numbers put this game. To me that says the Warriors' absences are in the price, and the Lakers are getting credit for a group that has barely played together. Doncic, Reaves and Walker Kessler shared the floor for exactly one preseason half. Redick used 12 different starters across five exhibitions. The last look at this team was a 121-106 home loss to Denver with 14 turnovers on 42.7% shooting. This roster has talent, but it's being priced like a finished product.

Golden State's healthy core has plenty of years together. Curry is probable with no minutes restriction. Green closed the preseason with 7 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals and a +18. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, a confirmed starter, averaged 15.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists in the preseason on 56.9% shooting and 43.8% from three. The finale against Portland showed this offense at its cleanest: 29 assists, 18-of-44 from deep and only 13 turnovers. The risks are real. Brandin Podziemski and Charles Bassey are fresh absences. Green starts at center against a Lakers team that has Kessler and Kevon Looney. This group also averaged 20.8 turnovers over its first five exhibitions. Even so, the choice is between taking 6.5 at even money and laying -122 on a core with one shared half of basketball. The Warriors side has the better price and more room for error. Give me Golden State and the points.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • LAL won last season's series 3-1

    3-1

The Lakers took three of four last season, by 10 a game. Golden State now comes in without Porzingis, Butler and Moody, which tilts the matchup further. Four games is a real but small sample, so weigh the injuries more than the old margin.

REPLACEMENT

  • Kristaps Porzingis is OUT for GSW

    OUT

Porzingis misses the start of the season with no firm return. Golden State is also without Butler and Moody, so a lot falls on Curry, whose scoring line sits below his average from last season.

  • Jimmy Butler is OUT for GSW

    OUT

Butler is out after surgery on a January injury, progressed to individual court work but still with steps to go. With Porzingis and Moody also out, Golden State is short three rotation players against the Lakers.

  • Moses Moody is OUT for GSW

    OUT

Moody is out, limited to individual court work, though reportedly ahead of Butler in his rehab. He is the likelier of the two to return first, which matters for Golden State's wing depth in the coming weeks.

  • Collin Sexton is Day-To-Day for LAL

    Day-To-Day

Sexton is day-to-day after a right soleus strain kept him out of the preseason, though he got through the last two practices. His status affects the Lakers' guard rotation behind Doncic.

SITUATIONAL

  • Season opener for both teams

    OPENER

Both teams open tonight, so rest is even. Golden State's injury list matters far more than any schedule angle.

  • GARY'S PICK
    DRAYMOND GREENASSISTS OVER 5.5
    NBAGolden State Warriors· -136

    Draymond Green
    Assists over 5.5

    -136 · CASHED · ACTUAL 8

    Golden State Warriors

Draymond Green starts at center tonight, so the Golden State offense runs through him more than on almost any night last season. Brandin Podziemski is out, which removes the second guard who brings the ball up and runs the secondary action. Porzingis and Bassey are out too, so Green is the hub at the top of the floor for most of his minutes.

The matchup helps him. The Lakers built their defense around Walker Kessler and Kevon Looney sitting in drop coverage. You can't sit in drop against Stephen Curry coming off a Green screen, so Los Angeles will have to show high or trap. Every time they do, Green catches it on the short roll with a four-on-three in front of him. He has built a career on that play. He closed the preseason with 10 assists against Portland, and last season he averaged 5.6 a game, with plenty of nights in the high single digits when the offense ran through him. Horford, Niang, Melton and Lendeborg can all knock down the shots those reads create.

What beats it: cold shooting. Green can make the right pass all night and still sit on five if Horford and Niang miss open threes. Turnovers are the other worry. This team was sloppy for most of camp, and a dead possession is a lost assist chance. A big Lakers lead in the fourth could also cut his minutes. At -136 I'm paying for it, but his role tonight is as big as it gets. Over 5.5 assists.

  • GARY'S PICK
    WALKER KESSLERREBOUNDS OVER 10.5
    NBALos Angeles Lakers· -139

    Walker Kessler
    Rebounds over 10.5

    -139 · LOST · ACTUAL 9

    Los Angeles Lakers

Walker Kessler gets the cleanest rebounding setup on the board tonight. Golden State has no true center available. Porzingis is away from the team and Bassey is out with the knee. That leaves Draymond Green starting at the five with Gui Santos next to him and a 40-year-old Al Horford behind them. Green is a smart box-out player, and he still gives up real size to Kessler every time a shot goes up.

The way Los Angeles defends keeps Kessler where the misses land. Redick wants him quarterbacking the back line in drop coverage, so he sits near the rim on most Warriors possessions. Green doesn't stretch the floor, so Kessler won't have to chase him out to the arc. He can sag off and play free safety. Golden State lives on volume threes, and when those miss, Kessler is the biggest body in the paint. He averaged 10.8 rebounds in 31 minutes across his five games last season, and tonight's frontcourt matchup is about as favorable as he will see.

What beats it: minutes. Kevon Looney is a rebounder too and can take some of the board work when he's on the floor. If Kessler picks up early fouls or the Lakers run away with it, he could sit long stretches of the fourth. Horford pulling him out to the perimeter in the bench units is the other risk, and long rebounds off missed threes tend to bounce out to the guards. I'll pay -139 for the size gap. Over 10.5 rebounds.
