The read
Opening night at Toyota Center, and the Rockets welcome Dallas with Fred VanVleet back running the offense and Kyrie Irving making his first regular-season appearance in 19 months. Houston is laying 9.5, and that is too many points for a game with no regular-season evidence behind either team.
To cover a spread this size, Houston has to control all 48 minutes, and the measured evidence doesn't support that yet. The two preseason meetings between these rosters were decided by 18 and 17 points in opposite directions, and the combined score was 250-249. Houston's weak spot is ball security. The Rockets ranked 28th in turnover rate last season and gave the ball away 21 times in each Macao meeting. In the October 11 game, Dallas scored 17 points off Houston's first 11 turnovers. The Houston offense ranked 17th in effective field-goal percentage last season. Its 27-point preseason win over Oklahoma City came on a night the Thunder shot 5-for-36 from three, so that margin flatters them. Last season's four meetings never produced a double-digit Houston win, and the two home wins came by 8 and 4. The personnel has changed on both sides since then, but no 2026-27 result has shown that gap widening yet.
Dallas has more scoring than it did last season. Irving and Cooper Flagg combined for 44 points in the preseason finale, and the team had 30 assists on 40 made baskets. Flagg is coming off a 21.0/6.7/4.5 Rookie of the Year season. The schedule also helps the underdog. Houston plays three games in four nights, and Ime Udoka has built a 10-man rotation so his heavy-minute players can sit without a big drop-off. A big Rockets lead makes it more likely the starters rest early. Dallas's depth would keep playing those minutes: Sergio de Larrea shot 8-of-12 from three in the preseason, and Max Christie scored 14 on 4-of-7 shooting against Houston. The risk is real. Dallas gave up 135 points twice in the preseason and sent Atlanta to the line 30 times in one half. Houston also rebounded 37.4% of its own misses last season. If the Rockets protect the ball the way they did against Oklahoma City, with 8 turnovers, this one can get away. Still, at 9.5 and -105, I'll take the points.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
DAL and HOU split last season 2-2
2-2Dallas and Houston split four games last season, so history gives no lean. Dallas is now without Lively and Aldama, which matters more for this matchup than the old split.
REPLACEMENT
Dereck Lively II is OUT for DAL
OUTLively is out with no clear timetable after right foot surgery last December. With Aldama also out, Dallas is short on size against Houston, which is a matchup angle for rebounding and interior scoring.
Santi Aldama is OUT for DAL
OUTAldama is out tonight, still ramping up after right knee surgery in March, with Friday against Indiana his next chance to play. Dallas is also without Lively, so the frontcourt is thin. Minutes for the remaining bigs are the angle to check.
SITUATIONAL
Season opener for both teams
OPENERBoth teams open tonight, so rest is even. Dallas' missing bigs are the bigger factor.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKAMEN THOMPSONPOINTS REBOUNDS ASSISTS UNDER 30.5
Amen Thompson's number comes from last season. Houston played without Fred VanVleet, so Amen spent long stretches as the primary ballhandler and logged close to 38 minutes a night. He doesn't have that job tonight. VanVleet starts at the point, Marcus Smart and Reed Sheppard handle the ball off the bench, and Bogdan Bogdanovic gives Ime Udoka another guard to use. Udoka built a 10-man rotation so his heavy-minute players get relief. Tonight starts three games in four nights, so opening night is the natural place to begin that.
We already saw the new setup in the preseason finale. VanVleet ran the offense and handed out 8 assists, and Amen finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Fewer minutes and fewer possessions as the initiator cut into all three columns, assists most of all. The 9.5 spread points the same way. If Houston builds the lead the market expects, the starters sit in the fourth.
What beats this is the open floor. Dallas plays fast, launches threes in volume and turned the Atlanta game into a parade to the line. Amen is the best transition finisher on either roster. If the game stays loose and he plays 36 minutes running the break and chasing Kyrie Irving, he can clear 30.5 on volume alone. I think the role change matters more than the pace. I'll take the under at -110.
- GARY'S PICKALPEREN SENGUNREBOUNDS OVER 8.5
Dallas comes into Toyota Center without Dereck Lively II or Santi Aldama. That leaves a frontcourt of Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington and Morez Johnson Jr., a rookie who is still learning what NBA bigs feel like. Alperen Sengun averaged 9.0 rebounds last season and does most of Houston's work on the defensive glass, and that is a thin wall to put in front of him.
Dallas also shoots a lot of threes under Dusty May: 51 attempts in one Macao game against this Houston team and 40 in the other. Missed threes come off long, and plenty of them end up with the center who has boxed out under the rim. Steven Adams is questionable with calf soreness. If he sits or is limited, more of the big-man minutes go to Sengun, with Clint Capela as the only other true center on the roster.
The price is -131, and the main risk is minutes. A Houston blowout can send Sengun to the bench early in the fourth. Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr. both rebound well from the wing and can grab long misses before he gets there. Gafford is healthier than he was a year ago and will fight him for position all night. Against this Dallas frontcourt, I'll pay the price on the over at 8.5.
