The read

Opening night at Barclays Center, and the Nets and Hornets meet in the season opener for the second straight year. The market has Charlotte as a road favorite, and I think that respect rests mostly on last season's 44-38 against Brooklyn's 20-62 tank year. Both of those records were built by different rosters, and both teams sit at 0-0 tonight. The Charlotte group taking the floor is essentially the one that went 1-3 in preseason, lost by 14.75 points a game and averaged 23.3 turnovers. That is the closest measured evidence we have of this team, and it isn't pretty.

The gaps I can measure all point the same way. Brooklyn turned it over 15.0 times a game in preseason against Charlotte's 23.3, forced 25 Charlotte turnovers in the October 6 meeting, and watched Memphis turn 24 Hornets giveaways into 23 points in the finale. Charles Lee called defensive rebounding a preseason strength, yet Memphis won the boards 42-35 and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds against Charlotte's 24 defensive rebounds, and Boston outscored Charlotte 56-20 in the paint. Brooklyn's projected five of Egor Demin, Keon Ellis, Michael Porter Jr., Julius Randle and Day'Ron Sharpe started together in preseason, while Charlotte's fifth starter was still unsettled on game day. Porter (24.2 a game last season) and Randle (21.1 last season, 19 assists in four preseason games) give Brooklyn two proven scorers, and the Nets drew 31.5 free-throw attempts a game in preseason.

Brooklyn's defense is a real concern. Miami won the paint 62-38 and shot 31-of-40 inside, and Sharpe picked up his fifth foul midway through the third. The 20-of-37 three-point night against Charlotte won't repeat, and neither will Porter's 23-of-39 shooting. Charlotte did look sharp in its 15-point win over Milwaukee. But the Hornets showed their own paint problems in Boston, so that weakness doesn't hand them a clean edge. At +1.5, I need the home team, with its full rotation and the measured edge in ball security, to win the game or lose by a single point. That's a price I'll take.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • CHA won last season's series 2-1

    2-1

Charlotte won two of three last season, by 12.3 a game. Three games is a small sample, and the Hornets are missing four players tonight, including Knueppel and Coby White, so last season's margin is a weak guide.

REPLACEMENT

  • Kylan Boswell is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Boswell is out while rehabbing from right knee surgery. He is one of four Charlotte players missing tonight, along with Knueppel, Coby White and Grant Williams, which pushes more minutes and shots to the healthy players.

  • Coby White is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Coby White is out with a calf strain, limited to individual work at practice. With Knueppel and Grant Williams also out, Charlotte's backcourt is short, which is why Brandon Miller's scoring line is set high tonight.

  • Grant Williams is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Grant Williams is out, still unable to practice fully as he works back from a hamstring injury. Royce O'Neale is in line for some of those minutes, which is the role to check in props.

  • Kon Knueppel is OUT for CHA

    OUT

Knueppel is out for the opener with a left hamstring injury after missing the whole preseason. Charlotte is also without Coby White and Grant Williams, so the scoring load shifts heavily onto Brandon Miller.

SITUATIONAL

  • Season opener for both teams

    OPENER

Both teams open tonight, so rest is even. Charlotte's four absences matter far more than the schedule.

    Brandon Miller
    Points under 24.5

    -105 · CASHED · ACTUAL 18

    Charlotte Hornets

Brandon Miller is the biggest name on the Charlotte side tonight, and the book has priced him like a man about to absorb every shot Kon Knueppel and Coby White leave behind. Twenty-four and a half is a big number for a player who averaged 20.1 last season in 30 minutes with LaMelo Ball setting the table. His usage will climb, and I accept that. Volume and efficiency rarely climb together, though. The closest look we have at this version of Miller came in Boston, where he scored 16 on 4-for-17 shooting with no organized creator around him.

The shots won't all go to Miller either. Naz Reid is a real second option, Grayson Allen and Dennis Schroder both want the ball, and Charles Lee keeps saying the offense should run through everyone. Brooklyn has Keon Ellis to throw at him, and Ellis is the kind of pest who turns clean looks into contested ones. Charlotte also gave the ball away in bunches all preseason, and every wasted trip is a possession Miller never gets to finish.

What beats me is a hot shooting night. Miller can make five threes in a hurry, and Brooklyn's defense leaked badly against Miami. If the Nets can't stay in front of anyone and Miller lives at the line, he clears this. At a near even price, I'll take the under on a number that asks him to beat his best form in his first game without his best teammates.

    Day'Ron Sharpe
    Rebounds over 7.5

    -132 · CASHED · ACTUAL 8

    Brooklyn Nets

Day'Ron Sharpe grabbed 6.7 rebounds a night last season in under 19 minutes. That was a backup's workload. With Nic Claxton traded to Chicago, the center job is his, and a rebounder with his motor now gets to do that work for much longer stretches. Seven and a half asks for only modest growth over what he did coming off the bench.

The matchup helps. Charlotte lost the glass 42-35 in Memphis and gave up 11 offensive boards, and offensive rebounding is the best part of Sharpe's game. Moussa Diabate will fight him for every ball, which matters, but the Hornets are thin up front with Grant Williams out and lean on young bigs behind Diabate and Naz Reid. Charlotte also launches threes at a heavy volume, and long misses mean long rebounds and extra chances for a big who chases everything.

The danger is fouls. Sharpe picked up his fifth in the third quarter against Miami, and if he sits early, Moritz Wagner eats his minutes and this goes nowhere. Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. will take their share of the defensive boards too. I'll pay the price for a starter's minutes on a player whose rebounding per minute has always been there.
