The read
Opening night at Kia Center, and Sean Sweeney's first game running the Magic comes against the Atlanta team that won all four meetings last season. The book has Orlando as a 2.5-point home favorite, which after home court treats these clubs as roughly even. I don't think they are even right now. Atlanta has already proven who it is over a long run of real games. Orlando's best evidence comes from four exhibitions.
Atlanta brings back Quin Snyder and the same starting five of CJ McCollum, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu. That group logged 822 possessions together and graded in the 90th percentile in efficiency differential. It drove last season's closing run, with the league's second-best defense after the All-Star break and a +10.4 net rating. Last season the Hawks forced turnovers at a 13.2% rate, sixth in the league, and shot 37.1% from three, fifth. Orlando's preseason defensive rating was 112.5, 23rd, and its first-half defensive rebounding ranked 18th. Its own coach calls the new habits "third nature." The 118.1 preseason offensive rating is real, but Orlando also posted the second-best preseason offense a year ago and finished 18th once the games counted.
Orlando does have a real case. Franz Wagner was out for one late-season meeting and played under 20 minutes in the other, so a healthy starting five makes the sweep less meaningful. The Magic ranked second in free-throw rate last season to Atlanta's 27th, and 10th in offensive rebounding to Atlanta's 20th. Those are Orlando's real paths to winning this game. Still, I'd rather back the group with a regular-season track record than the one debuting a new system tonight. At +2.5, a loss by a bucket still cashes, so I'm taking Atlanta.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
ATL won last season's series 4-0
4-0Atlanta swept the four meetings last season and won by 15 a game. That is a lopsided result over a full series. Orlando is also without Anthony Black tonight, while Atlanta misses Veesaar and Gueye. Last season's sweep says Atlanta matched up well, but rosters reset over a summer, so it is a starting point for the spread rather than proof.
REPLACEMENT
Mouhamed Gueye is OUT for ATL
OUTGueye is out, with a re-evaluation set for three to four months out, so he misses the start of the season. Atlanta is also without Veesaar, so the frontcourt depth behind the starters is thinner.
Anthony Black is OUT for ORL
OUTBlack is out after spraining his right ankle and missing the preseason. Orlando opens without him against an Atlanta team that swept them last season.
Henri Veesaar is OUT for ATL
OUTVeesaar, the No. 52 pick, is out after an injury in a September workout confirmed by MRI. As a late second-round rookie, his absence changes little for Atlanta's rotation tonight.
SITUATIONAL
Season opener for both teams
OPENERBoth teams open tonight, so rest is even. Last season's results and tonight's injuries carry the weight.

2- GARY'S PICKDESMOND BANE3-POINTERS OVER 2.5
The biggest change in Orlando under Sean Sweeney is how often it shoots from deep, and Desmond Bane is at the center of it. The Magic took 42.5 threes a game in the preseason after averaging 34.1 last season. Bane's own attempts per 100 possessions went from 7.3 to 17.4, more than double. He showed it in the finale, going 7 for 12 from three against Miami, and Sweeney praised him for hunting those shots. Bane is now playing in a system that wants him firing.
He also doesn't need that new volume for this to cash. He averaged 2.2 made threes last season on far fewer attempts, and over his last ten he reached three makes regularly. With Anthony Black out and the bench short on creators, Orlando's starters will carry heavy minutes, and Bane played all 82 games last year at about 34 minutes a night. Atlanta likes to push early in the shot clock, which Sweeney flagged at shootaround. More possessions means more chances. At plus money, a shooter whose attempts doubled is the side I want.
What beats it: Atlanta has the personnel to take him off the line. Dyson Daniels, Luguentz Dort and Nickeil Alexander-Walker can chase and top-lock him, and the Hawks finished last season as one of the league's best defenses. Orlando also had a hot shooting preseason a year ago that disappeared once the games counted. If the volume falls back toward last season's and he goes cold early, two makes is a realistic floor.
- GARY'S PICKFRANZ WAGNERASSISTS OVER 5.5
The preseason film says Franz Wagner is running a lot more of Orlando's offense now. He totaled 24 assists in roughly 70 exhibition minutes, an average of 6.0 a game while playing under 18 minutes a night. Sweeney has him in pick-and-roll with Paolo Banchero setting the screen and diving, which is a pairing the previous staff mostly kept apart. Even if his per-minute rate drops off a lot once he's playing full starter's minutes, the volume still clears this number.
The injury list helps him too. Anthony Black is out, so Jalen Suggs is the only true guard creator in the rotation, and the reporting on Orlando's bench says outright that it lacks a creator. Wagner will likely be the one steadying lineups when Suggs or Banchero sits. The new shot profile makes his passes more likely to become assists, with Bane, Tristan da Silva and the rest of the floor spacers waiting for kickouts. At plus money, I'm betting that the role change is real.
What beats it: his assist rate last season was nowhere near this line, so the book is already pricing in the change. Banchero still carried a heavy preseason usage load and could take over the half court in a close game. Daniels has some of the best hands in the league and could disrupt his passing. Wagner was also limited to light work Sunday and played only 40 games last year, so any minutes caution would make this tough to reach.
