Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks

Laying 15.5 points on the road in the NBA is an incredibly uncomfortable proposition. A number that high usually triggers an automatic look at the home underdog. But when you examine the current state of the Dallas Mavericks, it becomes clear why the market has set this line where it is, and why it might still not be high enough. Dallas is a team in freefall, currently riding a seven-game home losing streak at the American Airlines Center, their worst since the 1997-98 season. They have dropped 12 of their last 14 games, and over their last five contests, their defensive rating has ballooned to a dismal 119.4. Opponents are shooting an effective field goal percentage of 57.3 percent against them during this stretch.

The injury report explains exactly why this defense has collapsed. Their frontcourt is completely decimated. Cooper Flagg, Dereck Lively II, and Marvin Bagley III are out. P.J. Washington, who accounts for nearly a quarter of the team's rebounds and 20 percent of their points, is doubtful with an ankle sprain. Naji Marshall is questionable with a finger contusion. They are rolling out a patchwork rotation that head coach Jason Kidd admits is learning on the fly with zero continuity, ranking 24th in the league in assists. We just saw what happens when this version of the Mavericks plays a functional team. A 22-win Memphis Grizzlies squad came into Dallas and built a 34-point lead by the third quarter, eventually winning by 19.

If Memphis can dismantle this roster that thoroughly, the number one seed in the Western Conference is going to have a field day. The Oklahoma City Thunder are operating at peak efficiency, leading the West with a massive plus 11.1 season net rating and an excellent 21-8 record on the road. They recently welcomed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander back to the lineup, and he immediately dropped 36 points and nine assists against Denver. With Dallas missing its primary interior defenders, Chet Holmgren, who just grabbed 21 rebounds in his last game, should completely control the glass and the paint.

Furthermore, the Thunder have the depth to ensure this game does not get close when the starters sit. Their bench operates at a plus 9.0 net rating, fueled by rookie Jared McCain shooting nearly 46 percent from deep. Dallas's bench operates at a minus 5.2 net rating. When the second units are on the floor, the Thunder extend leads rather than give them up. Oklahoma City already beat Dallas by 21 points earlier this season against a much healthier Mavericks team. The Thunder are disciplined, turning the ball over on just 12.5 percent of their possessions, and they do not let teams hang around, ranking first in clutch net rating. Dallas is broken, exhausted, and severely outmanned. Do not let the large spread scare you away from the clear reality of this matchup.
