Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Hornets

We've got two teams with identical 29-31 records meeting in an early Saturday tip-off at the Spectrum Center, but these squads are moving in completely different directions. Charlotte is arguably the hottest team in the Eastern Conference right now, having won 13 of their last 16 games, and they are coming home after a perfect road trip where they were absolutely dismantling opponents. While Portland has shown some grit lately, they are walking into a buzzsaw without their most important offensive piece.

The biggest factor in this matchup is the absence of Deni Avdija. You can't just remove a guy averaging 24 points and nearly 7 assists and expect the offense to hum. Avdija is the primary playmaker for Portland, accounting for over 36 percent of their assists. Without him, the burden shifts entirely to Jerami Grant and Jrue Holiday. While Grant has been scoring well, he is more of a finisher than a creator, and I expect Portland's half-court offense to struggle against a Charlotte defense that ranks first in the league in limiting opponent free-throw attempts.

The tactical battle on the glass also heavily favors the Hornets. Portland's entire identity is built on being the best second-chance scoring team in the NBA. However, they are facing a Charlotte unit that ranks first in the league in limiting opponent rebounds. Moussa Diabate has been elite at cleaning up the glass, and even with Donovan Clingan back in the lineup for Portland, Charlotte has the discipline to neutralize those extra possessions. If you take away Portland’s second-chance points and force them to win with playmaking they don't currently have, the margin for error disappears.

Finally, the shooting disparity is just too wide to ignore. Charlotte is getting historic production from rookie Kon Knueppel and high-level efficiency from Brandon Miller. The Hornets have posted a staggering +10.6 net rating over their last five games, driven by an offensive rating that is nearly ten points higher than their season average. Portland’s perimeter defense has been vulnerable lately, allowing teams to shoot nearly 40 percent from deep.
