Gary's Take I love this spot for Atlanta even with Trae Young sidelined (Young OUT, Hawks still 13-11 overall). Both teams want to run (pace 104.0 for Washington vs 103.5 for Atlanta), but only the Hawks pair that tempo with real two-way efficiency (offensive rating 113.2 and defensive rating 113.8 vs Washington’s 109.3 and 121.3 – points scored and allowed per 100 possessions). That gap shows up in the recent net ratings (around -0.6 for Atlanta vs -12.0 for Washington) and in the standings (Wizards 3-18 overall, 2-7 at home vs Hawks 13-11, 9-5 on the road).

The numbers don’t lie – Jalen Johnson has been playing at a near All-Star level (23.1 points, 10.4 rebounds, 7.7 assists per game with 40.5% from three), and he becomes the primary creator without Trae. Dyson Daniels complements him by doing a bit of everything (10.7 points, 6.2 boards, 5.9 assists), while shooters like Luke Kennard and Keaton Wallace space the floor (Kennard 42.0% and Wallace 41.1% from deep). That’s why Atlanta is so dangerous from outside (38.5% on 30.6 three-point attempts for 11.8 makes per game) and lives at the line (19.9 free-throw attempts per game at 79.3%), giving them multiple efficient scoring avenues.

Washington’s best counter is sheer volume of possessions, because they actually protect the ball and crash the glass (turnover rate 11.1% with 6.7 turnovers per game and a 30.7% offensive rebounding rate). CJ McCollum has to carry a heavy scoring load (18.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists with 38.8% from three), and Cam Whitmore needs to pop as a secondary option (9.2 points and 28.6% from deep). Combine that with their superior late-game composure (Hawks 5-3 in games decided by five points or fewer vs Wizards 1-3) and overall shot quality (effective field-goal percentage 56.4% vs 56.1% plus stronger true shooting), and you get a profile built to pull away, not play coin-flip basketball. This screams value to me because the market is focused on Trae’s absence, but Atlanta still owns a clear efficiency cushion on both ends (about a four-point offensive edge and nearly eight-point defensive edge per 100 possessions). Lock this in: Atlanta’s shooting and free-throw pressure should overpower Washington’s turnover and rebounding edge over 48 minutes, and they have the tools to win comfortably by double digits (recent net rating gap of roughly 11 points in Atlanta’s favor).

Only way this misses is if Washington absolutely dominates the offensive glass beyond their already strong level and Atlanta has an unusually cold night from three despite their season-long shooting profile.
