The read
Game 4 at Rate Field is sold out. The White Sox can clinch a series at home for the first time since 1906, and the Guardians face elimination. Cleveland sends Parker Messick to the mound, and Chicago counters with a bullpen that can cover the whole game behind opener Hagen Smith.
My pick rests on who pitches after the starters. Chicago's three best relievers all sat out yesterday's loss: - Grant Taylor has 7.2 scoreless postseason innings with 11 strikeouts and is on two days off. - Jordan Hicks has thrown 4.0 hitless postseason innings. - Erick Fedde has had seven full days off since he finished the Wild Card round with two hitless innings.
Cleveland's late-inning group all pitched yesterday: - Cade Smith threw 19 pitches over two innings. - Tim Herrin threw 18, Hunter Gaddis 12 and Shawn Armstrong 5.
Cleveland's rested options are Erik Sabrowski, who has an 11.57 postseason ERA, and arms who haven't pitched in a playoff game this year. The Chicago pitchers who walked the bases full in Game 3 were mostly depth arms. With an off-day before any Game 5, Venable can spend his best relievers tonight.
The second reason is how Chicago lines up against Messick. He is very good: his .274 wOBA allowed matches his .275 xwOBA, so his results aren't luck. But 12 of the 17 home runs he allowed this season went to right-handed hitters. Chicago starts righties Chase Meidroth (1.023 OPS vs lefties), Randal Grichuk (1.086) and Miguel Vargas (.926) at the top of the order. Munetaka Murakami already took him deep in Game 1. Messick's last four full starts lasted 5.1, 6.0, 5.0 and 4.1 innings. If he goes about five again, Chicago reaches Cleveland's worn bullpen with plenty of the game left.
The risk is real. Smith has thrown 21 pitches since yesterday and has walked 5 hitters in 5.2 postseason innings. This lineup also just struck out 19 times. A wild first inning or another strikeout-heavy night could end Chicago's season-saving chances early. Still, Smith only has to get the game started. Chicago went 48-33 at home, and its best relievers are rested while Cleveland's pitched yesterday. At close to even money, I'll take that edge in the later innings.

HEAT CHECK
Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.068Rocchio has been hitting far above his usual level over 34 at-bats, well past his .705 season OPS. That is a short run, and 34 at-bats does not make him a new hitter. His season line and 15 home runs describe a solid, ordinary bat, so expect him to drift back toward .705. At a 0.5 total-bases line the only question is one hit, and a hot two weeks says little about that against the White Sox.
Chase Meidroth: 1.066 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.066Meidroth has been one of the more dangerous bats in the lineup over 41 at-bats, running well above his .765 season OPS. A window that short can lift the number fast and drop it just as fast. His 16 home runs show the power is real, which gives the run some support. With his total-bases line at 1.5 for CLE @ CHW, decide whether you are pricing the hot stretch or the full-season bat, and lean toward the season.
COOLING OFF
Colson Montgomery: .265 OPS in Last 15 Days
.265Montgomery has barely reached base or hit for power over the last 15 days, and that covers only 39 at-bats. His season OPS is .685, so this is a 0.42 drop from a mark that was already modest. A stretch of 39 at-bats swings on a few results, and a move back toward .685 is the likelier path. For CLE @ CHW, price him near his season form, and remember that form has a limited ceiling.
Tristan Peters: .307 OPS in Last 15 Days
.307Peters has done almost nothing at the plate lately, but the window is just 28 at-bats, the thinnest sample in this group. His season OPS is .774, a 0.467 gap, and a handful of hits would close much of it. Expect him to move back toward the season mark rather than stay buried. For CLE @ CHW, judge him off the .774 and give the recent slump light weight.
BULLPEN
Chicago White Sox pen: 22 relief IP across 3 games
22 IPGrant Taylor worked 2 games (49 pitches); Bryan Hudson worked 2 games (22 pitches; 3.74 season ERA over 67.1 IP). The pen allowed 10 ER in that 22-IP span (Oct 3–Oct 7).
Cleveland Guardians pen: 17 relief IP across 3 games
17 IPCade Smith worked all 3 games (36 pitches); Hunter Gaddis worked all 3 games (33 pitches; 2.98 season ERA over 60.1 IP). The pen allowed 5 ER in that 17-IP span (Oct 3–Oct 7).
HEAD-TO-HEAD
White Sox are 7-6 vs Guardians this season
7-6Across 13 meetings the White Sox have won one more game than the Guardians, which is about as even as a season series gets. The record comes with no detail on starters, venues or margins, so it offers no matchup reason. Cleveland won the latest one 6-3. A one-game edge carries little weight tonight, so price this game on the starters and current form.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKPARKER MESSICKPITCHER HITS ALLOWED OVER 3.5
I'm taking Messick over 3.5 hits allowed at -157. This prop is about who Venable wrote into the lineup. He built tonight's card to face a lefty. Peters, Antonacci and Benintendi sit. Right-handed bats come in, and the top of the order is the part of this roster that hits left-handers hardest. Chase Meidroth carries a 1.023 OPS against lefties, Randal Grichuk 1.025 and Miguel Vargas .927. Those three will get the most trips to the plate against Messick before Vogt goes to his bullpen.
They also know him well. This is his sixth look at Chicago this year. Meidroth is 4 for 15 against him for his career and Grichuk is 5 for 12. On September 16 the White Sox put 7 hits on him in six innings. In Game 1 they had 4 hits by the time he left with one out in the fifth. Over the full season he allowed 153 hits in 186.1 innings, which is a little more than four and a half hits per start. His recent starts with real length went 6, 5, 7, 3, 7 and 5 hits. Rate Field plays as a modest hitter's park, and the wind is a non-factor at 3 mph.
The strongest case against this is length and the strikeout. Right-handed hitters batted only .206 against him this year, and Chicago's lineup strikes out a lot. The White Sox fanned 19 times last night, and Colson Montgomery is 0 for 22 this week. Tommy Pham has a .450 OPS against lefties and bats fifth. Cleveland is facing elimination, so Vogt has every reason to pull Messick the moment a rally starts. His outs line sits at 14.5, and he lasted only 4.1 innings in Game 1. If he is out in the fourth, three hits can hold up. At -157 I'm paying for that risk, but this lineup is aimed straight at him, and to get him out early Chicago will probably need a few hits first.
- GARY'S PICKKYLE TEELH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
I'm taking Teel over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -135. This prop needs one hit, one run or one RBI, and Teel gives himself several ways to get there. He takes walks: 19 against 119 at-bats, with a .336 on-base mark. Game 1 shows how this cashes even when the bat is quiet. He went 0 for 3 against Messick, then walked off Erik Sabrowski in the seventh and scored on Colson Montgomery's double. He has done something that counts here in all three games of this series: a run in Game 1, a single and a run in Game 2, and an RBI double in Game 3. He is 6 for 16 over the last week.
The game shape also helps him. Messick went 4.1 innings in Game 1, and his outs line tonight is 14.5. From the seventh spot, Teel's later plate appearances will probably come against Cleveland's bullpen, and its late leverage arms are right-handed: Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis and Shawn Armstrong. Teel has a .744 OPS against right-handers, and all five of his home runs came off them. The price also helps. This line was -140 before Game 1 and -155 before Game 2, so -135 is the cheapest it has been all series.
The contrary evidence is real. Teel has a .575 OPS against lefties in a small sample of 39 plate appearances. He is hitless in two career games against Messick, with four strikeouts across those six at-bats, and he struck out 51 times in 119 at-bats this year. Batting seventh caps him at about three or four trips. Colson Montgomery hits behind him and is in a deep slump, which makes it harder for Teel to score if he only reaches first. This is a bottom-of-the-order catcher in a tough matchup. Still, his walks plus a likely early look at Cleveland's right-handed relievers give him enough ways to cash at this price.
