The read

Rate Field goes black for a 3 p.m. first pitch, with the White Sox one win from their first home series clincher since 1906 and Cleveland facing elimination. Both clubs open with a reliever, so the middle innings decide this one, and that's where Chicago has the edge. Behind Sean Newcomb, Venable can turn to Erick Fedde (1.37 ERA over his last five appearances, 6 full days off), Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, Jordan Hicks and Grant Taylor. That staff has a 1.75 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 36 innings this October and has held Cleveland to 7-for-61 in the series. Cleveland's real weakness is left-handed pitching. Over its last 30 games it had a .638 OPS against lefty starters and .806 against righties. Steven Kwan (.609) and Travis Bazzana (.526) are among the bats that fade against lefties, and Chicago can keep sending lefties at them.

On the other side, Cleveland's expected plan runs into what the White Sox do best. If Joey Cantillo follows Daniel Espino, as CBS/Field Level Media reported is expected, he faces Chicago's right-handed core. Against lefties, Randal Grichuk has a 1.086 OPS, Chase Meidroth 1.023 and Miguel Vargas .926. Over the last 30 days, the White Sox had a .779 OPS and scored 5.6 runs per game against lefty starters. Cantillo has walked 81 batters in 159.0 innings, and he had 7- and 5-walk outings before the opener arrangement steadied him. Espino has allowed a .965 OPS to righties, which gives Vargas a good spot early. If Cantillo falters, Foster Griffin and Tanner Bibee both struggled over their last five starts. Chicago also had the better regular season underneath the records: 4.79 runs scored and 4.44 allowed per game, against Cleveland's 4.19 and 4.12, and a 48-33 home record.

The risks are real. Cleveland's .311 xwOBA in this series says its hitting has been better than the .115 average. Newcomb's 4.27 xERA sits well above his 3.09 ERA. Facing elimination, Vogt can push Cade Smith, who held lefties to .162/.218/.253, for more than an inning. Munetaka Murakami's .639 day-game OPS is another worry. Still, at -130 you're getting a deeper staff with more rested arms, at home, against a lineup that hasn't solved left-handed pitching. White Sox moneyline.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAT CHECK

  • Chase Meidroth: 1.066 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.066

Meidroth has a 1.066 OPS in 41 AB over the last 15 days, against a .765 season baseline, a 0.301 swing. Forty-one at-bats is a small window, but a .765 season with 16 home runs is a solid floor to fall back to. His total-bases line tonight is 0.5, which one hit clears, so the question is how often he reaches safely, and both his season and recent form support him there.

  • Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.068

Rocchio has a 1.068 OPS in 34 AB over the last 15 days, against a .705 season mark, a 0.363 swing. Thirty-four at-bats is a short run, and a .705 hitter usually cools back toward his baseline. His 15 home runs on the season show the power is real. His total-bases line tonight is 0.5, so one hit cashes it, which makes reaching safely matter more than the hot OPS.

COOLING OFF

  • Colson Montgomery: .265 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .265

Montgomery has a .265 OPS in 39 AB over the last 15 days, with little getting on base or going for extra bases. His season mark is .685, so the 0.42 dip comes off a baseline that was already modest. In 39 AB, some bounce back is the likelier path, though .685 is a limited ceiling. For CLE at CHW, expect production closer to his season form than to this slump.

  • Tristan Peters: .307 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .307

Peters has a .307 OPS over the last 15 days, but that covers only 28 AB. His season mark is .774, so the 0.467 drop rests on a sample where a handful of outcomes swing everything. Expect movement back toward the season line more than a lasting collapse. In CLE at CHW, lean on the .774 when judging his props and give the recent stretch light weight.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • White Sox are 7-6 vs Guardians this season

    7-6

Thirteen games in, Chicago has one more win than Cleveland, about as even as a season series gets. The sheet says nothing about who pitched, where the games were played or how they were won, and Cleveland took the last one 6-3. A one-game edge over 13 meetings carries little weight, so price tonight on the starters and current form.

STREAK

  • CHW have won 5 straight

    W5

The White Sox have won 5 in a row by a combined 13 runs and are 7-2 over their last 9, so the run has some length to it. Five games is a small sample, and the sheet names no player or unit driving it. The run margin says the wins have been earned. Hosting Cleveland tonight, the question is whether the price has already caught up to the hot stretch.

TEAM RECORD

  • White Sox 5-1 in Sean Newcomb's last 6 starts

    5-1

Chicago has won five straight Newcomb starts and is 5-1 over his last six. The sheet has no runs allowed, opponents or bullpen data, so there is no way to split credit between Newcomb, run support and the schedule. Six starts is a small sample, and team records behind one starter swing fast. Against Cleveland, price the game on the matchup and give the 5-1 mark little weight.

    MLBCleveland Guardians· -109

    Steven Kwan
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -109 · LOST · ACTUAL 3

    Cleveland Guardians

I'm taking Steven Kwan under 1.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -109. The key is which arm throws to him. Sean Newcomb, a lefty, opens for Chicago, and the White Sox bullpen behind him is full of left-handers: Hagen Smith, Bryan Hudson, Anthony Kay and Noah Schultz are all rested, and nobody on that staff has pitched since Monday. James Fegan reported before the series that Chicago expected to lean on its southpaws against a Cleveland lineup with few true right-handed bats. That was his forecast, not anything Will Venable announced, but the first two games played out that way.

That matters because Kwan is a different hitter against lefties. Over a full season's sample of 205 plate appearances, he has a .609 OPS against left-handers and a .787 OPS against right-handers, with no home runs off a lefty all year. His walks are the best part of his game against left-handers, and walks don't count toward this prop. In this series he has one single in his trips to the plate against Chicago's lefties and righties combined. Leading off a lineup that has scored three runs in two games doesn't give him much RBI chance either.

Here is the case against me. Kwan is hitting well. He was strong in July, August and September, and his recent output on this exact stat has been running above the line. He leads off, so he gets the most trips of anyone in the lineup. He's also seen Newcomb before and reached base in half of those six plate appearances, which is a small sample. The bigger threat is the hitters behind him. José Ramírez and Chase DeLauter both hit left-handed pitching well, so one hit for Kwan could easily turn into a run scored and clear this line. Rate Field plays a little friendly to hitters too. At close to even money, I'm still taking the under on the hitter whose weak split lines up with the arms Chicago is set up to use.

  • GARY'S PICK
    RANDAL GRICHUKH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
    MLBChicago White Sox· -150

    Randal Grichuk
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -150 · CASHED · ACTUAL 1

    Chicago White Sox

I'm taking Randal Grichuk under 1.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -150. Most of it comes down to his role. He's hitting eighth tonight, after spending most of the season near the top of the order, so he'll get fewer trips to the plate than anyone in Chicago's lineup except Colson Montgomery. With fewer plate appearances, he has fewer ways to get to two.

The opposing starter fits this bet. Daniel Espino is a right-hander, and Grichuk has a .668 OPS against righties in 92 plate appearances, compared with an OPS over 1.000 against lefties in a bigger sample. He's been a platoon bat all year, and Chicago has Andrew Benintendi on the bench. If Cleveland goes to a right-hander late, his night could end early. In this series he has no hits. His only contribution came from a pinch-hit walk on Monday that turned into a run.

The case against this is real, and it's why my confidence is close to the minimum. Espino is an opener, so with Grichuk batting eighth he may not face him at all. If Joey Cantillo pitches the bulk innings behind Espino, as he did in September, Grichuk gets the left-hander he hits best. Cleveland's middle relief also includes lefties Tim Herrin, Erik Sabrowski and Foster Griffin. Grichuk has been hot lately, with two home runs over the last week and recent production on this stat well above the line. Right-handed hitters have also hit Espino hard in a sample of only 29 at-bats. I'm laying -150 because his place in the order and the right-hander starting the game both work against him, but if a lefty takes the ball in the third inning, this bet gets much shakier.
