The read
The Padres are facing elimination again under the Petco Park lights, with Walker Buehler on the mound against Robert Gasser and a 103-win Milwaukee club that is one win away from the NLCS. All three games in this series have been decided by one run. Tonight I'm betting on the team whose contact numbers have been better than its results.
Across the three NLDS games, Milwaukee has a 48.1% hard-hit rate and a .375 expected wOBA. San Diego sits at 30.7% and .290 and has only two extra-base hits in the series. The Brewers out-hit the Padres 11-6 in Game 3 and still lost because they stranded 11 runners, including a 107 mph Yelich grounder that turned into the game-ending double play. Buehler gives that lineup room to work. He has allowed a home run in each of his last six starts. Lefties have a .768 OPS against him and drew 36 walks, and Milwaukee starts five of them. His four-seamer carries a .385 expected wOBA, and Bauers (.449) and Chourio (.402) have hit that pitch well. He also covered only 22.1 innings over his last five starts, so a lot of outs could fall to the San Diego bullpen.
That bullpen is where I see the gap. Matsui, Rodriguez, Adam and King all pitched last night, and King has thrown 112 pitches since Sunday. Miller is back, but he has walked 8 in 11.1 innings over the last 30 days, and Morejon still has to pass a pregame check on his shoulder. Milwaukee has Megill and Ashby on two full days of rest and Uribe after only 7 pitches. The real risk is Gasser against seven right-handed bats, who have a .765 OPS against him. But he comes in with a 1.67 ERA over his last five starts and has allowed only 4 home runs in his last 10 outings. He is also pitching in a park that suppresses home runs, with a breeze blowing in from left. At -106, I'll take the team with the louder bats and the fresher bullpen arms.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAT CHECK
Jake Cronenworth: .968 OPS in Last 15 Days
.968Cronenworth has a .968 OPS over the last 15 days in 47 AB, well above his .629 season mark. That 0.339 swing comes from about two weeks of games, and a .629 hitter over a full season usually settles back toward it. His total-bases line tonight is 1.5, which needs a double or two hits, so lean on the season baseline more than the hot stretch when judging it.
Xander Bogaerts: 1.123 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.123Bogaerts has a 1.123 OPS in 34 AB over the last 15 days, against .676 for the season, a 0.447 swing. Thirty-four at-bats is a small sample, and 13 home runs on the season point to modest power over the long run. Expect this to cool toward the season line. His total-bases line tonight is 1.5, which takes a double or two hits, so price it off the .676 hitter more than the hot two weeks.
COOLING OFF
Garrett Mitchell: .560 OPS in Last 15 Days
.560Mitchell has a .560 OPS over the last 15 days in 36 AB, against a .771 season mark. In a window that small, a couple of hits either way swings the number a lot. Expect him to move back toward .771. In MIL at SD, his season line tells you more than this short cold spell.
Manny Machado: .567 OPS in Last 15 Days
.567Machado has a .567 OPS in 51 AB over the last 15 days, a 0.144 drop from his .711 season mark. That is a small gap from a middling baseline, so this looks like a mild slide. In MIL at SD, use the .711 as the anchor, with the recent dip as a slight lean down on his props.
BULLPEN
Milwaukee Brewers pen: 14 relief IP across 3 games
14 IPAbner Uribe worked all 3 games (49 pitches); Trevor Megill worked 2 games (26 pitches; 2.63 season ERA over 61.2 IP). The pen allowed 1 ER in that 14-IP span (Oct 3–Oct 6).
San Diego Padres pen: 13.2 relief IP across 3 games
13.2 IPYuki Matsui worked all 3 games (65 pitches); Mason Miller worked 1 game (40 pitches; 1.67 season ERA over 70 IP). The pen allowed 4 ER in that 13.2-IP span (Oct 3–Oct 6).
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Padres are 4-2 vs Brewers this season
4-2San Diego is 4-2 against Milwaukee in six meetings, and the most recent one was a 4-3 game. That is close to an even split over a short sample, and the sheet has nothing on starters, venues or margins that points to a matchup edge. Tonight is in San Diego. The pitching matchup and current form carry more weight than a 4-2 series.
STREAK
MIL have won 7 straight
W7Milwaukee is 7-0 in this stretch and has outscored opponents by 16 runs, so the wins have come from steady margins more than a couple of blowouts. Seven games is a short sample, and nothing here says how the Brewers match up in San Diego. A hot week usually gets built into the price fast, so judge tonight on the pitching matchup and the number offered.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKSAL FRELICKH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
Sal Frelick under 1.5 hits, runs and RBIs at -164. He bats seventh for Milwaukee tonight against Walker Buehler. To clear this number he needs two pieces to land in three or four trips to the plate, and his bat rarely produces that kind of night. He carries a .614 OPS with a .319 slugging mark and four home runs over 339 at-bats this season. His expected numbers sit right on top of his actual ones, so I don't see hidden bad luck waiting to flip. Against right-handers he's at a .640 OPS, and over his last fifteen games the combined total has averaged under one per game.
The run and RBI paths are thin too. Garrett Mitchell hits right behind him and has struggled this week, so Frelick reaching base doesn't guarantee he comes around. If Buehler exits early, San Diego's bullpen has Yuki Matsui and possibly Adrian Morejon from the left side, and Frelick has a .541 OPS against lefties. Petco plays big, with the breeze coming in from left.
The strongest case against me is Buehler himself. Lefties have a .768 OPS against him this year, and Milwaukee has been squaring the ball up all series. Frelick also showed in Game 2 how this can go over without much contact: a single, two walks, a run and an RBI added up to three. At -164 I'm paying a real price, and his profile still fits the under.
- GARY'S PICKSAMAD TAYLORH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
Samad Taylor over 0.5 hits, runs and RBIs at -150. He's in left field and batting ninth against Robert Gasser, and one single, one run or one RBI cashes this. Gasser has been sharp lately, but his damage comes from the right side. Righties have a .765 OPS against him and lefties have a .552, and San Diego starts seven right-handed bats tonight. Taylor has a .764 OPS against lefties this season, though that comes from only 47 at-bats. He had a hit in both games he played this series.
The run path is what makes this work. Taylor bats directly in front of Fernando Tatis Jr., who has been San Diego's hottest hitter this week and owns a .986 OPS against lefties. In Game 3 Taylor singled, stole second and scored on a Tatis groundout. He has 13 steals in 51 games, and runners have run freely on Gasser this year, so one single or walk can become a run. William Contreras throws well behind the plate, which cuts into that edge.
The risk is real. The ninth spot gets the fewest trips in the lineup, and if Milwaukee goes to a right-hander late, Dustin Harris sits on the bench as a left-handed option. Taylor's expected numbers on contact run well below his actual results. He also went hitless through a long stretch in late September, including an 0 for 2 against Chicago lefty Boyd. Gasser posted a 1.67 ERA in September. One clean contribution is all I need, and the spot in front of Tatis gives him two ways to get it.
