The read
I'm taking Chris Sale at home against a Dodgers lineup that has already shown it's worried about him. LA benched Max Muncy (.847 OPS vs lefties), moved Shohei Ohtani down to fifth and put Will Smith at cleanup. Smith has a .604 OPS against left-handers, Freddie Freeman sits at .681 and Kiké Hernández at .569. That's a lineup rebuilt around one pitcher. Sale has held these hitters to 2 earned runs in 16 innings this year, with 18 strikeouts and no walks. He has a 1.66 ERA in 87 innings at Truist Park. Weiss passed on starting him on short rest in Game 2 to get him at full strength for this game. His slider allows a .208 xwOBA with a 38.7% whiff rate, and several of LA's best hitters handle sliders poorly; Mookie Betts sits at .205. The one place Sale has been hurt is home runs from right-handed hitters, 9 of his 10 allowed. Tonight the wind is blowing in from left field at 8 mph.
On the other side, Yoshinobu Yamamoto hasn't pitched in a game since September 23, a 13-day layoff with nothing like it in his season. He's excellent, and his road numbers are better than his home numbers. Still, Atlanta's top four are strong against right-handers: Drake Baldwin has an .888 OPS against them, Michael Harris II is 8-for-20 this postseason, and Austin Riley's OPS jumps from .556 on the road to .756 at home. Atlanta doesn't need much offense if Sale pitches deep. Meanwhile Ohtani is 11-for-60 with 24 strikeouts over his last 15 games.
The best case against this pick is the bullpen. Didier Fuentes and Ray Kerr are reported unavailable, and LA has Alex Vesia and Edwin Díaz rested with no earned runs allowed over the last 30 days. If Sale leaves early, Atlanta's middle relief is a real risk. My read is that a full-strength Sale shortens the game so that Raisel Iglesias (0.96 ERA over his last 30 days) only has to finish it. At -106, I'll back the ace at home over a lineup reshuffled to face him.

HEAT CHECK
Mookie Betts: 1.046 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.046Betts has a 1.046 OPS over the last 15 days against a .780 season mark. The 46 AB sample is decent for two weeks, and his 23 home runs say he can produce stretches like this, though some pullback toward his season level is likely. His total-bases line at Atlanta is 1.5, which takes a double or two hits, so his recent extra-base form matters more here than on a one-hit prop.
Will Smith: 1.182 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.182Smith has a 1.182 OPS over the last 15 days, far above his .781 season mark. It comes in 31 AB, the smallest sample of this group, so it can cool quickly, though his 10 home runs show some real pop. His total-bases line at Atlanta is 0.5, so a single clears it. This is a catcher seeing the ball well over a short window, and his season line is still the better measure of his level.
COOLING OFF
Freddie Freeman: .489 OPS in Last 15 Days
.489Freeman has a .489 OPS over the last 15 days in 46 AB, well below his .792 season mark. That is about two weeks, short enough that a handful of hard-hit outs can drag the number down. Hitters with a .792 baseline usually drift back toward it. For his props at Atlanta, give the full season more weight than this cold stretch.
Ozzie Albies: .405 OPS in Last 15 Days
.405Albies has a .405 OPS over the last 15 days in 43 AB, against a .685 season mark. That is a cold two weeks in a small sample, and his season number was already modest, so a bounce back has a lower ceiling. For his props at Atlanta, the .685 season mark is the better guide, with the slump as a reason for some caution.
FIRST INNING
LAD have gone quiet in the 1st: runs in 0 of their last 9
0/9LAD scored in the first inning in 0 of the 9 sampled games. 2026 first-inning pitching samples — Chris Sale: 1.33 ERA, .248 opponent AVG across 27.0 IP, 2 HR; Yoshinobu Yamamoto: 3.54 ERA, .225 opponent AVG across 28.0 IP, 4 HR.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Braves are 5-1 vs Dodgers this season
5-1Atlanta has won five of six against Los Angeles this season, and the latest was a 1-0 game. Six games is a small sample, and there is nothing here on who pitched, where the earlier games were played or how close the rest were. Tonight's game is in Atlanta. The starters and current form deserve more weight than a 5-1 series record.
STREAK
LAD games have gone UNDER 8 straight
U8Dodgers games have stayed under the total eight straight times, with both teams combining for 5.9 runs a night against totals set around 8. Tonight's line at Atlanta is 6.5, so the market has already come down to meet the trend and most of that cushion is gone. Eight games is a small sample, and nothing on the sheet explains the low scoring. The question for a bettor is whether 6.5 is still too high for these two teams.

2- GARY'S PICKCHRIS SALEPITCHER OUTS OVER 17.5
I'm taking Sale over 17.5 outs at -165. Weiss built this whole series so he could hand the ball to a fresh Sale at home in Game 3. He skipped him in Los Angeles, burned an opener and six relievers to steal Game 2, and said plainly he wanted "a full-strength Chris Sale." A manager who protects his ace that carefully plans to ride him.
The matchup supports a long night. Sale threw a 109-pitch shutout against this same Dodgers club at Truist Park on August 27, striking out 11 without a walk, and he held them to two runs over seven in May. He has been close to untouchable at home all year with a 1.66 ERA, and his first innings have been clean, so he rarely digs an early hole that forces a hook. Across his recent starts he has gotten to the 18-out mark again and again. The lone short outing came on September 23, when Weiss deliberately kept him under 100 pitches to set up the Wild Card opener. When it counted on September 29 against the Phillies, he recorded 19 outs. The Dodgers bats are not hot either: Freeman and Ohtani have been quiet over the last two weeks, and Will Smith is hitless in the series and has never gotten a hit off Sale. With the wind blowing in from left, fly balls should die more often than they carry.
The strongest case against: this Dodgers lineup is built to face lefties tonight. Roberts is stacking right-handed bats like Teoscar Hernández, Andy Pages and Miguel Rojas, who all hit lefties well this season, and Mookie Betts has handled Sale over 20 career plate appearances. The Dodgers also draw walks, and a couple of long at-bats early could push Sale's pitch count up. After Monday's off day every Atlanta reliever is rested, including Fuentes and Iglesias, so in an elimination-adjacent game Weiss has the arms to pull Sale at the first sign of trouble in the sixth. At 37 and a week removed from a start plus a relief appearance, he gives me some fatigue risk too. That is why I'm paying a heavy price on a number he only needs to clear by one out.
- GARY'S PICKHA-SEONG KIMHITS UNDER 0.5
I'm taking Kim under 0.5 hits at -160. He hits ninth tonight, and he has been the weakest bat in this Atlanta lineup all season. He has one home run's worth of slugging in nothing, a .452 OPS against right-handers, and his expected numbers based on contact quality are nearly as bad as his actual line. So I can't call this bad luck that is due to turn. He has gone hitless in almost every game over the past month, and his only real production lately came through walks.
Tonight he faces Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who was as hard to square up as any starter in the league this year. Right-handed hitters posted a .586 OPS against him, and he finished his regular season with three straight starts of seven innings or more. Hitting ninth, Kim figures to get about three trips to the plate, and some of those could end as walks, which help this ticket. If Atlanta trails late, Weiss has already shown he will lift Kim. Lane Thomas took his spot in Game 1, so Kim may not even see the late-inning relievers.
The strongest case against: Kim is 3 for 7 with a homer against Yamamoto in his career. That comes from only eight plate appearances, so I give it little weight, but it is real contact against this pitcher. Yamamoto is also coming off 12 days between starts, and his swing-and-miss dropped sharply in his last outing against San Diego. If he is rusty early, even the bottom of the order could find a single. And Kim has delivered big hits in September before: a walk-off against the Dodgers in August and a 106 mph game-tying single against the Phillies. On a short sample, one bloop can beat me.
