The read
The market is pricing this game on the starters' surface numbers: May's 5.65 ERA as a Brewer against Pivetta's 1.64 since coming back. I think that overrates how much of tonight those two will actually pitch. Pivetta hasn't thrown more than 87 pitches since his return, and May hasn't finished four innings since Sep 11. Murphy has called this "all hands on deck." That puts most of the game in the bullpens, and Milwaukee has the better one. The Brewers' relievers have thrown 9 scoreless innings in this series. Behind May they have long relievers who haven't pitched in more than a week, including Drohan, who has a 1.47 ERA in 30.2 innings. San Diego's late innings are less settled. Miller is coming off a 40-pitch blown save and has allowed 7 earned runs and 8 walks in 12.1 innings over the last 30 days. Stammen is talking about limiting him to one inning, and Morejon gave up the go-ahead homer in Game 1.
May is also a better bet against this lineup than his Milwaukee numbers suggest. He has a 1.23 ERA in 22 innings against San Diego this year, including 7 innings with 1 earned run at Petco on Aug 12, and Merrill is 0-for-10 against him. Pivetta has been good, but his results have been better than his underlying numbers. Opponents have a .249 wOBA against an expected .277, his xERA is 3.2, and he allows a 10.1% barrel rate. He throws his four-seamer 54.3% of the time, and Milwaukee's top lefties hit right-handers well: Turang has an .901 OPS against them and Bauers .863, with Bauers at a .449 xwOBA against four-seamers. Milwaukee's contact quality in this series (.399 xwOBA) has been much better than its .190 batting average shows.
The risk is real. San Diego went 51-30 at home. May has issued 42 of his 50 walks to left-handed hitters, and the Padres start five lefties. Most Brewers regulars also hit worse on the road. A rough first inning from May could decide this before the bullpen ever matters. Against that, Contreras has thrown out 25 of 48 base stealers while Salas is 0-for-6, and six of the eight meetings this year were decided by one or two runs. If the bullpens decide a close game, +116 is too high a price on the side with the better bullpen. I'll take Milwaukee to finish the series tonight.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
STARTER FORM
Nick Pivetta: 1.38 ERA over his last 3 starts
1.38Pivetta has allowed 2 earned runs in 13 innings over his last 3 starts, with 15 strikeouts, so hitters are barely scoring and missing plenty. Three starts is short, and 13 innings across them means he is not working deep, which leaves real innings to the bullpen. His 2.86 season ERA says this is a hot version of a pitcher who has been good all year. Against Milwaukee, the strikeouts are the strongest part of the form, and the late innings fall to San Diego's relievers.
HEAT CHECK
Jake Cronenworth: .968 OPS in Last 15 Days
.968Cronenworth has a .968 OPS over the last 15 days, far above his .629 season mark. That comes in 47 AB, about two weeks, so a hot stretch is carrying the number, and it should drift back toward his season level. His total-bases line tonight against Milwaukee is 0.5, so one hit clears it, and his recent form says the bat is live right now.
Xander Bogaerts: 1.123 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.123Bogaerts has a 1.123 OPS over the last 15 days, well above his .676 season mark. It comes in just 34 AB, where a few extra-base hits swing the number a lot, so this pace is unlikely to last. His 13 home runs show the power is real. With a 0.5 total-bases line against Milwaukee, one hit is enough, and that is the kind of prop where a hot short stretch counts most.
COOLING OFF
Garrett Mitchell: .560 OPS in Last 15 Days
.560Mitchell has a .560 OPS over the last 15 days in just 36 AB, against a .771 season mark. A window that thin moves a lot on a couple of hits, so expect him to drift back toward .771. For his props in San Diego, the season line says more than this short cold spell.
Manny Machado: .567 OPS in Last 15 Days
.567Machado has a .567 OPS over the last 15 days in 51 AB, a 0.144 drop from his .711 season mark. That is the smallest gap in this group, and his season number is middling, so this looks like a mild slide. For his props against Milwaukee, anchor on the .711 season mark and let the recent dip nudge you only slightly lower.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Padres are 4-2 vs Brewers this season
4-2San Diego is 4-2 against Milwaukee across six meetings, and the latest was a 4-3 game. That is close to an even split over a short sample, and nothing here on starters, venues or margins points to a real matchup edge. Tonight is in San Diego. The pitching matchup and how each team is playing now carry more weight than this series record.
STREAK
MIL have won 7 straight
W7Milwaukee has won seven in a row and outscored opponents by 16 runs in that stretch, so these are real wins, more than a string of coin flips. They are 7-1 over their last eight, which is good form over a short run. Streaks end, and tonight they are on the road in San Diego. Price the Brewers on how well they have been playing, and be careful if the line charges extra for the streak itself.
TEAM RECORD
Padres 7-1 in Nick Pivetta's last 8 starts
7-1San Diego has won seven of Pivetta's last eight starts, including the last six in a row. Eight starts is a short stretch, and with no runs allowed or opponent detail here, it is hard to split the credit between his arm and the lineup behind him. Team records behind one pitcher tend to cool off. Against Milwaukee, use the streak as a prompt to check how Pivetta is actually pitching, and price the game on that.

Props on this game
2- GARY'S PICKNICK PIVETTAK'S OVER 3.5
Nick Pivetta over 3.5 strikeouts at -158. This number sat at 4.5 for his last two starts, and the drop to 3.5 is the market pricing in a quick hook. San Diego faces elimination, and the bullpen hasn't thrown since Sunday. I agree he probably doesn't see the fifth inning. I still think he gets to four. He struck out 16 in 13.2 innings over his last three regular-season starts, then struck out four Cubs in the Wild Card game while recording only ten outs. His four-seamer has been getting more swings and misses since he came back from the elbow injury. He has also handled left-handed hitters all year and hasn't allowed a home run to one in 75 at-bats. Milwaukee starts five lefties, and three of them, Bauers, Turang and Mitchell, each struck out more than 150 times this season. Contreras has struck out six times in 15 career plate appearances against him. Alfonso Márquez behind the plate calls a little above league average on strikeouts.
The case against is length and opponent. If Pivetta labors early and Stammen goes to Buehler or Rodriguez in the third, four strikeouts is hard to reach. The bottom of this order puts the ball in play. Frelick struck out only 38 times all season, and Pratt and Ortiz don't swing and miss much either. Yelich has also hit Pivetta hard, with two home runs in 22 career plate appearances. At -158 I'm paying for the strikeout stuff, and he has been showing it.
- GARY'S PICKDUSTIN HARRISH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
Dustin Harris over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -130. His plain hits line is also -130, so I'll take the version that pays on a hit, a run or an RBI. Harris has done nearly all his damage against right-handers, and he opens against Dustin May, a righty who has struggled with left-handed bats this year. Nine of the fourteen home runs May allowed and most of his walks came against lefties. Harris struck out only 20 times in 133 at-bats, so he puts the ball in play, and his contact quality matches his results. He reached base three times in Game 1 and drove in a run on a forceout in Game 2.
The strongest case against is his lineup spot and Milwaukee's bullpen. He bats eighth, so he may get only three trips. Behind May, the Brewers have plenty of left-handed relief in Ashby, Hall, Romero and Drohan. Harris has only 17 at-bats against lefties all season and hasn't done much in them, and Stammen replaced him with Jase Bowen late in Game 2. He has no home run power, Petco's marine air works against hitters, and he went hitless in five trips on Sunday. My bet rests on his first two looks at May, and at this price that's enough.
