The read

My read starts with the pitcher who will throw the most innings for Chicago tonight, and that isn't Anthony Kay. Sean Burke has dominated Cleveland this season: a 1.04 ERA over 17.1 innings, with 21 strikeouts and 3 walks. On Sep 14 he did this exact job at Progressive Field, working 5 innings in relief of an opener on 94 pitches without allowing an earned run. He also gets the matchup that matters most. Against a right-hander, Cleveland's best hitters lose their better side. José Ramírez drops to a .625 OPS, Angel Martínez to .711, and Jo Adell, batting cleanup, to .591. Cleveland had a .696 OPS during the season, managed three hits in Game 1, and the quality of its contact that day (a .227 xwOBA) was as weak as the box score.

Gavin Williams is the reason Cleveland is favored, and he's earned it. He has a 2.84 ERA at home, and his September was excellent. My doubts come from the details. His last start ended after 3.1 innings with 4 walks, and he said himself he was "spraying the ball everywhere." He then went 10 days without a game. His only longer-rest outing in this stretch came against this lineup, and it was messy: 113 pitches, 3 walks and 2 hit batters in a loss. Home runs account for 50.6% of the earned runs he's allowed, and Chicago finished fifth in home runs this season. His sinker is his most hittable pitch (.433 xwOBA allowed), and Chicago's left-handed bats hit sinkers hard: Sam Antonacci has a .420 xwOBA against them and Miguel Vargas .416. Over the last three games Chicago has made better contact than its results show, with a .397 xwOBA and a 47.9% hard-hit rate.

Here's what I'm betting against. Cleveland's bullpen threw only light loads in Game 1, Cade Smith hasn't allowed an earned run in 30 days, and Grant Taylor has thrown 42 pitches on top of an earlier 54. That's real. But Jordan Hicks hasn't allowed an earned run in 30 days either, tomorrow's off day lets Venable use Taylor and Hagen Smith in shorter stints, and if Burke gets deep the bullpen only has to cover the last few innings. At +130 I'm getting Chicago's best matchup arm and a lineup suited to attack Williams' weaknesses, against an offense that has to prove it can beat this pitching plan. I'll take it.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

PLATOON EDGE

  • Jo Adell (bats R) hits 4th against Anthony Kay (LHP)

    .971

Jo Adell turns into a different hitter against lefties: a .971 OPS over 172 at-bats, against .591 in 431 at-bats versus righties. The lefty sample is smaller, but 172 at-bats is enough to take seriously and the gap is wide. Anthony Kay is a lefty, and Adell hits 4th. His at-bats against Kay before the bullpen enters are the window where his power shows up most.

  • Andrew Benintendi (bats L) gets a RHP from the 5th spot

    .741

Andrew Benintendi has a .741 OPS in 376 at-bats against righties. His .500 against lefties comes from just 45 at-bats, so the righty line is the real read. Gavin Williams is a right-hander, so Benintendi gets his normal version from the 5th spot: a steady bat with a solid floor more than big upside.

HEAT CHECK

  • Brenton Doyle: 1.029 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.029

Doyle has been red hot over the last 15 days, a 1.029 OPS in 35 AB against .637 for the season. That is a small sample where a couple of extra-base hits swing the number hard, and the season line is the better read on who he is. Price him closer to the .637 hitter than the hot one, and be wary of props that have already moved up to chase the streak.

  • Chase Meidroth: 1.066 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.066

Meidroth's 1.066 OPS over the last 15 days sits 0.301 above his .765 season mark. It is only 41 AB, and a few extra-base hits swing a number like that fast, so expect drift back toward his season level. His 16 home runs say the power is real. His total-bases line in Cleveland is 0.5, so he needs one hit, and both his recent form and season line support that kind of bar.

  • Brayan Rocchio: 1.068 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.068

Rocchio has a 1.068 OPS over the last 15 days, well above his .705 season mark, in 34 AB. A short burst is doing most of the work there, though his 15 home runs show some real pop. His total-bases line is 0.5, so it comes down to whether he gets one hit, and that depends more on his everyday contact than the hot stretch.

COOLING OFF

  • Colson Montgomery: .265 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .265

Montgomery has been nearly an automatic out over the last 15 days, a .265 OPS in 39 AB. His season OPS is only .685, so even a full rebound puts him around an average or below-average bat. A short slump like this can turn quickly, but the ceiling is modest either way, and his season number sets a low bar for any hitting prop against Cleveland.

  • Tristan Peters: .307 OPS in L15, draws RHP Gavin Williams

    .307

Tristan Peters has a .307 OPS in just 28 at-bats over the last 15 days, against a .774 season mark. That is a tiny sample and says little about him. He gets right-hander Gavin Williams, his better side, with an .802 OPS across 382 AB. Lean on that larger number, since a cold 28 AB stretch can push his prices lower than his full record supports.

BALLPARK

  • Gavin Williams's ERA drops to 2.84 at Progressive Field

    2.84

Williams is a different pitcher at home: a 2.84 ERA with hitters at .201 over 107.2 innings in Cleveland, against 5.05 over 76.2 innings on the road. Eighteen home games is a real sample, so this looks like a pitcher who settles in at Progressive Field. Against Chicago tonight, the home version is the one to price, and his road numbers mostly do not apply.

PARK WEATHER

  • Wind blowing in 15 mph at Progressive Field tonight

    IN 15

A 15 mph wind blowing in from left at 62 degrees knocks fly balls down, so drives that carry on a calm night die on the warning track. That helps pitchers who get outs in the air and hurts power hitters on both sides. The total sits at 6.5, so the market has already priced the low scoring. The better angle is which lineup can score on singles, walks and running in this air.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • White Sox are 7-6 vs Guardians this season

    7-6

Thirteen games in, the White Sox lead this series by one, about as close to even as a season series gets. Nothing on the sheet explains the split by pitcher, venue or margin. Cleveland won the last meeting 6-3, and tonight is in Cleveland. The 7-6 record carries little weight on its own, so price this on tonight's starters and current form.

STREAK

  • CHW have won 4 straight

    W4

Chicago has won four straight by a combined 12 runs and is 7-2 over the last 9, so the form started before the streak. Nothing here says who carried it or which teams it came against. Four games is a short sample, and a trip to Cleveland tests it. Give the recent run some weight, and let tonight's pitching matchup decide how much.

TEAM RECORD

  • Guardians 6-2 in Gavin Williams's last 8 starts

    6-2

Cleveland has won most of Williams's recent outings, losing only twice in his last eight. That record covers the lineup and bullpen too, and eight games is a modest sample. He is home against the White Sox tonight, so the main question for a bettor is whether the number on Cleveland already prices in how dependable they have been behind him.

    Munetaka Murakami
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -145 · CASHED · ACTUAL 2

    Chicago White Sox

This card gets me Munetaka Murakami batting cleanup against a right-hander, which is the spot I want him in. His season split is lopsided. He has an .866 OPS and 28 of his 35 home runs against righties over 384 plate appearances, compared with a .725 OPS against lefties. Gavin Williams throws right-handed, and Murakami has already taken him deep once in six career plate appearances. The ticket only needs one hit, one run or one RBI, and the hitters around him help on all three. Kyle Teel and Miguel Vargas bat in front of him, and Vargas drew 101 walks this season. Williams walked four in his last start and walked three against this same lineup on Sep 14, so I expect runners on base when Murakami steps in. Murakami walked 92 times himself, and with Andrew Benintendi and Tristan Peters behind him, a walk is another way to score a run. He also comes in hot: he homered and drove in two in Game 1 and has three home runs over the past week.

The case against him is real. Williams has been much tougher on left-handed hitters this season, allowing a .621 OPS across 402 at-bats, and he piles up strikeouts. Murakami struck out 196 times, and August and September were his two weakest months. Williams is also at his best at Progressive Field. Late in the game Cleveland can bring in left-handers Erik Sabrowski and Tim Herrin, and each of them struck Murakami out in Game 1. At -145 I'm still taking the over from the four hole, because I expect a lot of traffic in front of him.

  • GARY'S PICK
    KYLE TEELH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
    MLBChicago White Sox· -155

    Kyle Teel
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -155 · CASHED · ACTUAL 2

    Chicago White Sox

Kyle Teel bats second tonight against a right-hander, and both of those things help this over. He's a left-handed hitter who has been much better against righties. He has a .744 OPS and all five of his home runs in 105 plate appearances against them, compared with a .575 OPS in 39 plate appearances against lefties. Batting second puts him directly ahead of Miguel Vargas and Munetaka Murakami, Chicago's two biggest power bats, so whenever he reaches on a single or a walk he has a real chance to score. He's been getting on base lately, with six hits over his last four games. In Game 1 he walked in the seventh and scored the third run on Colson Montgomery's double. The last time Chicago faced Williams at Progressive Field, Teel had a double and two RBI in the six-run sixth that started after Tristan Peters' marathon walk chased Williams. Teel takes his walks, and Williams has had command trouble recently, including four walks in his last outing.

The strongest argument against this card is the head-to-head record. Teel is 0 for 9 against Williams with six strikeouts, and Williams held left-handed hitters to a .621 OPS over 402 at-bats this season. That double on Sep 14 came off the bullpen, not Williams. Teel's entire major-league sample is small at 144 plate appearances, and he strikes out often, 51 times in that span. Ten plate appearances against one pitcher are too few to outweigh the platoon edge, the lineup spot and the bullpen innings he'll get once Williams leaves. At -155 I'll take it.
