The read
Game 2 is in the late-afternoon heat at Chavez Ravine. The two-time defending champs give the ball to Blake Snell, and for the second straight day the Braves answer with an opener, Ray Kerr, and a busy phone to the bullpen. My read comes down to who pitches the middle of this game. Snell has a 1.90 ERA backed by a 2.17 xERA and a 2% barrel rate, and hasn't allowed a home run. He faces an Atlanta lineup with a .653 OPS against left-handed starters over its last 30 games and a .209/.285/.360 line over its last 10. On the other side, Kerr threw a season-high 47 pitches Thursday and is expected to go only an inning or two. That leaves roughly seven innings for an Atlanta bullpen with a 4.93 ERA over its last 10.
That's why I'm laying the run line instead of paying -235. Dodd, Smith-Shawver and Suter covered the middle of Game 1. They threw 47, 53 and 33 pitches yesterday, and none of them has pitched the day after a 26-plus-pitch outing all season. The arms left to bridge the middle have been giving up runs. Over the last 30 days, Mederos has a 9.00 ERA, Lee 8.22, and Suarez 6.75 with zero strikeouts. Game 1 already showed how this goes: the opener held, then the middle relief gave up three homers. If the Dodgers get in front, Weiss either uses Iglesias while trailing or leans on that shaky depth. Roberts also has Muncy and his 22 homers against righties on the bench for those right-handed relievers. The Dodgers' own bullpen has a 1.16 ERA over the last 10, and the four arms used yesterday each threw 15 pitches or fewer.
The best case against me is real. Snell hasn't recorded a 19th out all season and was capped at 77 pitches last time out. That means the Dodgers' bullpen pitches the back third of the game, and Scott has a 5.63 ERA over the last 30 days. Monday's off day lets Weiss use all of his best relievers tonight, including Iglesias, who has a 0.90 ERA over 30 days. Atlanta also won the regular-season series 5-1, and three of those wins were by one run. A tight one-run game is exactly how the Braves survive this. I'm taking the Dodgers anyway. To reach its best arms, Atlanta first has to get through the shakiest part of its staff. And a lineup this cold against lefties isn't well built to come back from a multi-run deficit.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAT CHECK
Mookie Betts: 1.046 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.046Betts has a 1.046 OPS over the last 15 days in 46 AB, well above his .780 season mark. His 23 home runs make the power in this run believable. Two weeks is a short window, so expect him to settle between the two numbers. His total-bases line against Atlanta is 1.5, and one extra-base hit clears it.
Will Smith: 1.182 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.182Smith has a 1.182 OPS over the last 15 days in 31 AB, against a .781 season mark. A 0.401 swing on 31 AB usually drifts back. He has 10 home runs this season, so one swing clears his 1.5 total-bases line against Atlanta. The hot stretch adds a little to a hitter who already has a path to two bases.
COOLING OFF
Freddie Freeman: .489 OPS in Last 15 Days
.489Freeman has a .489 OPS over the last 15 days in 46 AB, a 0.303 drop from his .792 season mark. That is a real cold stretch, and 46 AB is still too small to change what he is. His season number is the better guide. If the market against the Dodgers leans hard on the slump, it may be underrating him.
Ozzie Albies: .405 OPS in Last 15 Days
.405Albies has a .405 OPS over the last 15 days in 43 AB, down 0.28 from his .685 season mark. That season level is already middling, so a rebound only gets him back to ordinary. Forty-three at-bats is short. Against the Dodgers, think of him as a .685 hitter running cold, with limited upside either way.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Braves are 5-1 vs Dodgers this season
5-1Atlanta has won five of six against Los Angeles, and the last meeting was a 1-0 game. Six games is a small sample, and the sheet doesn't say who started or where those games were played. Tonight is in Los Angeles, so price it on the starters and the park and keep the season series as background.
STREAK
LAD games have gone UNDER 7 straight
U7Those seven games landed around 6 runs while the totals sat near 8.1, so the unders cleared with room to spare. The books have caught up: tonight's total against Atlanta is down to 7. The sheet doesn't say whether the pitching or quiet bats drove it. A 6-run pace against a 7 is a much thinner cushion than the streak was built on, so the edge that made these easy is mostly priced out.
LAD have won 4 straight
W4The Dodgers have won the four by a combined 9 runs and are 7-2 over their last 9, so this is a couple of weeks of good baseball. Their games have been low scoring, which points to run prevention carrying the wins. Four games is a small sample, and Atlanta is the matchup that checks it. Decide whether you trust that run prevention more than the streak itself.
TEAM RECORD
Dodgers 6-2 in Blake Snell's last 8 starts
6-2Los Angeles has won six of Blake Snell's last eight starts. The win column also reflects the offense and bullpen, and eight starts is a small window. With Atlanta in town, it gives a modest reason to look at the Dodgers' side, but the price should come from tonight's matchup more than this record.

2- GARY'S PICKMATT OLSONH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
Matt Olson over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -177. The price is steep, but this market gives him the most ways to cash. A single does it. So does a walk that comes around to score, a sacrifice fly, or a ground ball that brings Baldwin home. He has driven in runs both ways lately, with a two-run single and a sac fly in Wild Card Game 2 and a homer in the clincher.
The matchup reason is simple. Olson is the one bat in this Atlanta lineup whose season holds up against left-handers. His OPS against lefties is .824, the same as his line against righties, and he has 16 homers in 280 plate appearances against them. Snell's handedness pulls Baldwin and Harris down a notch. It doesn't do that to Olson. He hits third behind Baldwin, who has been Atlanta's hottest hitter over the last two weeks, so the RBI path is open from the first inning. This is also a late-afternoon start in 88-degree heat, the day after a 100-degree Game 1 that produced five homers. Snell's leash has been short since his groin issue. He threw 77 pitches last time out and hasn't recorded a 19th out all season, so Olson should get two looks at him and then see a string of relievers.
The case against is real. September was Olson's worst month at the plate, a .633 OPS, and Skubal held him hitless with a strikeout yesterday. His career line against Snell is four hits in 22 plate appearances with no homers and six strikeouts. That is a small sample, but it doesn't help. Snell has allowed almost no hard contact this year, and Roberts can turn to Scott, Vesia or Bubic when Olson comes up late. I'm still taking it because his production doesn't drop against lefties, he has three separate ways to get on the board, and his spot in the order gives him RBI chances right away.
- GARY'S PICKDRAKE BALDWINTOTAL BASES OVER 0.5
Drake Baldwin over 0.5 total bases at -150. My main reason is volume. He leads off, he averages four and a half plate appearances a game, and he's swinging the best bat in Atlanta's lineup right now: a .997 OPS over the last 15 days and a .915 OPS over the last week. Yesterday he singled to open the game against Skubal, one of only two hits Skubal allowed in six innings.
The second reason is how this game is likely to be pitched. Snell has topped out at 77 pitches since his groin issue and hasn't gone past six innings all year. That puts at least two of Baldwin's trips against the Dodgers' bullpen. Several of the arms Roberts named for leverage are right-handed: Phillips, Sasaki, Díaz, Stewart and Henriquez. Baldwin has an .888 OPS and 18 homers against righties this year. One clean single in any of those trips cashes the ticket, and the heat at first pitch helps anything he lifts.
The strongest evidence against is his platoon split. Baldwin has a .695 OPS against lefties over 224 plate appearances, well below his line against righties, and he opens the game against Snell. He has never recorded an official at-bat against Snell. Both of their meetings ended in walks, and a walk does nothing for this market. Roberts also has three lefty relievers to use in Baldwin's spot, and Vesia retired him on a fly ball yesterday. He's also catching tonight on a short turnaround after an afternoon game. I'm laying the price because the leadoff spot gives him the most chances to put the ball in play and he's in the best form of anyone in this order. I'm keeping the confidence lower than on Olson because of that platoon gap.
