The read

It's win-or-go-home in the Bronx. The Red Sox send Sonny Gray to the mound to force a Game 3, and the Yankees hand the ball to Max Fried with a chance to close out the Wild Card Series at home. I'm on the Yankees, and it starts with who is harder to hit tonight. The ERAs look like a coin flip: 2.80 for Fried, 2.72 for Gray. The contact numbers don't. Fried carries a 2.51 xERA and allows 2.4% barrels and 29.8% hard contact. Gray's 3.87 xERA and 38.3% hard-hit rate say the market is paying for a shiny ERA on fragile footing. Fried's weaker side is right-handed hitters, and even they have only a .558 OPS against him. Boston has to use a right-leaning lineup that just lost Roman Anthony. Jahmai Jones (.206) and Nate Eaton (.160) fill two spots. Willson Contreras struck out three times in Game 1 after missing most of the final week. This club has a .607 OPS and 2.8 runs per game against lefty starters over its last 30, and went 7-for-74 with runners in scoring position over its last 10.

The Yankees' side of the matchup has teeth too. Boone stacked eight lefty bats against Gray, whose four-seamer (.362 xwOBA) and cutter (.371) are the pitches that get hit, and the park plays at a 1.08 factor with a 314-foot porch. Ben Rice has two-homer games on 9/23 and in Game 1, plus a .961 OPS against right-handers. If Fried's pitch count climbs early (97 is his high since coming off the IL), Boone has Will Warren, Carlos Rodón and Ryan Yarbrough rested to bridge to David Bednar, who has four full days off.

The best argument against me is real. Gray has gone 5+ innings in eight straight starts and has a 1.98 ERA in two starts against New York this year. Lefties, the side Boone is attacking with, have only a .653 OPS against him. If he hands a lead to Garrett Whitlock (1.72 ERA) and Aroldis Chapman (1.92), both on six full days off, Boston can steal this. But that path requires the weaker lineup to build a lead against the tougher pitcher first. If Gray stumbles early, the bridge to that back end is the same group that gave up eight runs in 3⅓ innings last night. At -136 I'm paying for the better arm and the deeper staff, and I'll take it.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAT CHECK

  • George Lombard Jr.: .885 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .885

Lombard is a below-average hitter on the season at .699, on a good run over his last 46 AB, up 0.186. The season number is the likelier place he lands. Against Boston, a 0.5 total-bases line asks for one hit, so the recent form helps, though his season level keeps it closer than the streak suggests.

  • Ben Rice: 1.041 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.041

Rice is hot on top of an already strong .897 season, a 0.144 lift over 43 AB. With 41 home runs this season, the power is established, so less of this run depends on luck. Against a 1.5 total-bases line, one extra-base hit clears it, and his season profile supports that more than most hitters on a hot streak.

COOLING OFF

  • Wilyer Abreu: .371 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .371

Abreu's last 15 days sit 0.402 below his .773 season mark, over 41 AB. That many at-bats can swing on a handful of results. The season line carries more weight, so a rebound is more likely than this pace holding. In BOS @ NYY, count the cold spell as recent form and price him closer to his season level.

  • Spencer Jones: .472 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .472

Jones sits 0.27 under his .742 season mark over the last 15 days, in 42 AB. A window that small lets a few strikeouts or soft outs pile up quickly. Expect him to drift back toward .742. In BOS @ NYY, give the recent form light weight against his season level.

BALLPARK

  • Max Fried's ERA jumps to 3.42 at Yankee Stadium

    3.42

Fried allows more runs at home, yet hitters are batting just .196 off him in the Bronx, so he is still missing bats there. That gap points at the park, where the short porch turns a few fly balls into homers and pushes ERA up without much contact. Nine games and 47.1 innings is a real sample, so the split should hold. Against Boston, expect few hits off him, with the long ball as the main way runs score.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Yankees are 7-6 vs Red Sox this season

    7-6

New York and Boston have split 13 games nearly evenly, so this series shows no real edge either way. The last game was a 16-1 Yankees rout, and one blowout says little about the next game in a rivalry this close. With nothing on the sheet about the arms or venues, the season series gives close to no lean tonight in New York. Start from the pitching matchup and current form.

STREAK

  • NYY games have gone OVER 4 straight

    O4

The Yankees' last four games have averaged 10.5 runs against totals around 6.5, clearing by about four runs a night. Four games with no pitchers named behind them says more about recent scoring than about these teams. Tonight's total is 6.5 again with Boston in the Bronx. Check the starters first, since four games alone will not tell you whether 6.5 is too low.

    Adley Rutschman
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -140 · CASHED · ACTUAL 0

    Boston Red Sox

I'm taking Adley Rutschman under 1.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -140. He has to stack two of those tonight, and the matchup works against him. Against Max Fried he turns around and hits right-handed, which has been his weaker side all season. He has never solved Fried: ten career at-bats, no hits, one walk and nothing for extra bases. Fried has been stingy with hard contact all year, and right-handed hitters have done very little against him. That fits my game call on the Yankees.

The run and RBI chances around him are thin. Roman Anthony's hand keeps him out tonight, so Jahmai Jones, a part-time bat, leads off in front of Rutschman. Behind him is Willson Contreras, who struck out three times in Game 1 after missing most of the final week. A lone single is a likely outcome here, and it leaves the ticket alive but short.

The case against me is his recent form. He has hit well over the last week, including a homer and a walk against Shota Imanaga, and on this combination he has averaged close to two per game over the full season. He bats second, so he gets a fourth trip, and one swing into the short porch covers the over by itself. If Fried exits early, the Yankees bullpen is rested, but Boston's bats would face fresh right-handers with Rutschman back on his better side. I'm betting that Fried's history against him holds up through the middle innings, and at -140 I'll lay it.

  • GARY'S PICK
    TREVOR STORYHITS OVER 0.5
    MLBBoston Red Sox· -135

    Trevor Story
    Hits over 0.5

    -135 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Boston Red Sox

Trevor Story over 0.5 hits at -135. He is one of the few Boston hitters who has actually done damage against Max Fried. In nineteen career at-bats against him, Story has four hits, and two of them left the yard with a double besides. That history is small but real, and it separates him from teammates who have barely touched Fried. He has also hit lefties a little better than righties this season. Since coming back from hernia surgery at the end of August he has looked closer to himself, with a steady run of games with a hit through mid-September, and he doubled off Paul Blackburn last night.

I prefer the hits line to the hits plus runs plus RBIs line at -164. Batting eighth, with Nate Eaton behind him, Story has little chance of scoring or driving in a run without getting a hit himself, so the extra coverage isn't worth the added price.

The case against me is loud. His last week has been ice cold, with just one hit across several games. He also struck out seven times in those twenty career trips against Fried. Batting eighth could leave him with only three plate appearances, and his season contact quality grades out below what he has actually hit. I also have the Yankees winning this game, and I expect Fried to be good. A Yankees win and a Story hit can both happen, since one solid swing gets this home, but this card runs against my own read of the game. I'm keeping it modest at -135.
