The read
Petco Park is packed again as the Padres try to close out the Cubs in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series. Nick Pivetta takes the ball against Kevin Gausman, who pitches with the Cubs' season on the line. My pick rests on two things: the late innings, and the fastball matchup at the top of the Padres' order.
Neither starter is likely to go deep. Pivetta has not pitched past 5.0 innings this season, and Gausman is starting on a left shoulder he hurt in his final regular-season start. That puts the game on the bullpens. The Game 1 blowout left the Padres' back end fully rested, with three full days off each for Mason Miller (1.67 ERA, 129 strikeouts in 70 innings), Bradgley Rodriguez (2.31 ERA) and Adrian Morejon (2.83 ERA). The Cubs' rested late-inning arms are Daniel Palencia (3.64 ERA) and Ryan Zeferjahn (3.88 ERA, 40 walks in 69.2 innings). If the game is close late, that gap should decide it.
The second piece is Gausman's four-seamer, which he throws 50.6% of the time and which allows a .344 xwOBA. Fernando Tatis Jr. has a .434 xwOBA against four-seamers and is hitting .368/.455/.684 over his last 10 games. Gausman has allowed 8 homers in his last 27.1 innings. His weaker platoon side, right-handed hitters (.766 OPS allowed), faces five right-handed Padres bats. Over their last 30 games, the Padres are 17-4 against right-handed starters and score 5.9 runs per game.
The best argument against this is real: over the full season the Cubs are the better team. Their +147 run differential dwarfs the Padres' +41. Their defense leads MLB with 116 Defensive Runs Saved. Pivetta's line rests on just 89 batted balls. And facing elimination, Counsell has Holmes, Peterson and Imanaga rested and nothing to save them for. I'm still taking the Padres. The Cubs' offense has scored 3.3 runs per game over its last 10, and to force a Game 3 it has to get past a rested, elite bullpen. The season-long talent argument only pays off if the Cubs' bats show up tonight. The Padres' bullpen edge doesn't depend on anything changing.

HEAT CHECK
Jake Cronenworth: .968 OPS in Last 15 Days
.968Cronenworth has hit like a middle-of-the-order bat over the last 15 days, but that is only 47 AB and sits far above his .629 season mark. A run that short usually drifts back toward the baseline, and a full season at .629 says more about who he is. His total-bases line is 0.5, so one hit clears it, which makes this a choice between two weeks of good contact and a season of weaker work.
Xander Bogaerts: 1.123 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.123Bogaerts has been one of the hottest bats around lately, but that run covers only 34 AB, well above his .676 season number, so expect it to cool. His 13 home runs show some pop. A 1.5 total-bases line needs an extra-base hit or two singles, and his season baseline makes that a harder ask than the recent stretch suggests.
COOLING OFF
Manny Machado: .567 OPS in Last 15 Days
.567Machado's last 15 days sit 0.144 below his .711 season baseline over 51 AB, the smallest drop and the largest sample in this group. That is a mild cool-off more than a real slump, and a gap this narrow can close quickly. For CHC @ SD, his .711 season mark is a reasonable expectation.
Luis Campusano: .584 OPS in Last 15 Days
.584Campusano's dip sits 0.211 below his .795 season baseline, in just 26 AB, a sample where one extra-base hit moves the number a lot. His .795 season line is the more reliable guide. In CHC @ SD, give the recent slump little weight and lean on the season level.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Cubs are 5-1 vs Padres this season
5-1Chicago has won five of six against San Diego, and the last meeting was a 23-3 blowout. Six games is a short sample, and one lopsided score makes a series look more one-sided than the teams are. Nothing on the sheet says who pitched or where those games were played, so there is no clear reason the edge carries into tonight in San Diego. Put tonight's pitching matchup well ahead of the head-to-head record.
TEAM RECORD
Padres 6-2 in Nick Pivetta's last 8 starts
6-2San Diego has won six of Nick Pivetta's last eight starts, and the last five in a row. That streak sits inside a small sample, and runs like it rarely last long. The record covers the whole team, and the sheet has no pitching lines to show how much of it is Pivetta. Hosting the Cubs, it supports the Padres on his day, though a streak this visible can push the price shorter than the evidence earns.

2- GARY'S PICKKEVIN GAUSMANPITCHER EARNED RUNS OVER 1.5
I'm taking Kevin Gausman over 1.5 earned runs at -145. He needs to give up two for this to cash, and his recent starts say the damage comes quickly and in bunches. Over his last five starts, eight of the ten scoring plays against him were home runs. His first-inning ERA this season is 7.43 across 23 innings. His road ERA is 5.40 over 76.2 innings, and most of that came before the trade. The four-seamer is the problem: he throws it about half the time, and it grades out as a hittable pitch while the splitter carries him.
The top of this Padres order is built to punish that. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado both bat right-handed, and right-handed hitters have done more damage against Gausman this year, a .766 OPS against .693 for lefties. Tatis is 8 for 23 against him with two homers, and Machado is 9 for 25 with two homers. Those are small career samples, but they point the same direction as his season. Tatis had a 1.066 OPS in September. The shoulder matters too. Gausman is starting on a left shoulder he banged up in his final start, and he admitted this one feels a little different. If Counsell pulls him with men on base, any inherited runner who scores still goes on his line.
The case against this is Petco. The marine air suppresses homers, the wind is blowing in from right, and his runs have mostly come on balls that leave the yard. The lefty part of the order has handled him poorly: Jackson Merrill is 0 for 6 and Jake Cronenworth is 2 for 19. A quick hook could also pull him after one run, before a second one scores. At -145 I'm paying for this, but a homer-prone arm with a sore shoulder facing Tatis and Machado early is a spot where two runs usually come.
- GARY'S PICKKEVIN GAUSMANK'S OVER 4.5
I'm taking Kevin Gausman over 4.5 strikeouts at +116. I get plus money on a pitcher who strikes out more than a batter an inning. He has 184 strikeouts in 177.2 innings this season and has averaged 6.3 per start over his last three. The splitter is the reason. It's a true swing-and-miss pitch, and in his last start against Miami it produced 19 of his 21 whiffs. The shoulder is his non-throwing side, and his swing-and-miss has been climbing late in the year.
The Padres give him some strikeout spots. Jake Cronenworth has struck out six times in 19 career plate appearances against him. Merrill has struck out in half of his six trips and has 18 strikeouts over his last 15 games. Austin Hays has five strikeouts in 16 plate appearances against him and bats 8th tonight. An elimination game should also mean he's going after hitters from the first pitch.
The counterargument is volume. His outs line sits at 13.5, so the market expects him to go only a little past four innings. Counsell has Holmes, Peterson and Imanaga ready, and a shoulder flare-up or a rough first inning could end his night before he gets to five strikeouts. This Padres lineup strikes out a little less than league average, and Erich Bacchus behind the plate runs slightly below the league in strikeouts. Even so, with his strikeout rate, five punchouts in four-plus innings is a normal night for him, and the plus price pays me for the risk of an early hook.
