The read

Final weekend at Target Field. Texas comes into Minneapolis tied atop the AL West with Houston holding the tiebreaker, and hands the ball to Jacob deGrom against Joe Ryan to open the last series of the year. Everybody sees the name on the Texas side of the mound; I'm betting on what happens after it leaves. In the two starts since the groin tightness surfaced, deGrom has needed 18.4 and 18.9 pitches per inning, and hasn't topped 94 pitches in any of the last eight. The realistic script is Texas asking its bullpen for a dozen outs, and that bullpen is the problem. Silseth, Alexander and Montgomery all worked Wednesday and Thursday. This season they've pitched the day after two straight days just 1 of 4, 2 of 10 and 0 of 1 times. Skip Schumaker called the relievers "on fumes." Behind them sit Junis, at a 7.27 ERA over the last 30 days, and Trevor Williams, who gave up a grand slam Wednesday. We've seen this before: the recap of the Sept. 15 start noted the bullpen had squandered the lead deGrom left in the start before.

Minnesota's pen is the mirror image. The Twins were off Thursday, nobody has worked consecutive days, and the top arms are sharp. Jeff Hoffman carries a 0.90 ERA over the last 30 days and hasn't allowed a hit in 24 plate appearances over two weeks. Travis Adams sits at 1.80 over those same 30 days. The group allowed 1 ER in 9.2 innings across the three Giants games. And the Texas bats haven't given me a reason to flip: they went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position in the Mets series.

The case against me is real, and it's Ryan. Since the break, Ryan has a 7.62 ERA over six starts and Minnesota lost all six. deGrom's 3.36 xERA beats Ryan's 3.73, and the six scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts at Seattle show deGrom's ceiling is still there. If Texas jumps Ryan early, this ticket is in trouble. But this is a nine-inning game priced as a coin flip at -106. Minnesota's bullpen, reported 26th in ERA this season, is fully rested, while Texas's best bridge arms are spent. The starter edge covers roughly five innings. I'm backing the side that owns the last four, at home, at a near pick'em price.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

COOLING OFF

  • Ezequiel Duran: .335 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .335

Ezequiel Duran has a .335 OPS over the last 15 days, 0.408 below his .743 season mark, in 48 at-bats. That is a short cold run, and the season line is the better read on who he is, so expect some pull back up. Against Minnesota, a prop line lowered on the slump can end up priced too low.

  • Ryan Jeffers: .237 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .237

Ryan Jeffers has a .237 OPS over the last 15 days, 0.571 below his .808 season mark. It covers only 32 at-bats, where a few hard-hit outs can sink the number. His season production says this is more likely to rise than stick, so against Texas his .808 is the better guide to his lines.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Twins are 3-0 vs Rangers this season

    3-0

Minnesota is 3-0 against Texas, the last one a 9-3 win. Three games is a small sample and the sheet gives no starters or venues, so it amounts to three results that could flip in one night. Tonight's pitching matchup matters far more than the sweep.

STREAK

  • MIN games have gone UNDER 6 straight

    U6

Minnesota's last six games have averaged 6.7 combined runs against totals around 8.5. Six games is a short run, and the market has already reacted: tonight's total is 7.25. The streak cleared by close to two runs a night, and the lower number takes away much of that cushion. Against Texas, the question is whether scoring stays near 6.7 or climbs toward a line that has already dropped.

    Nicky Lopez
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -165 · CASHED · ACTUAL 0

    Texas Rangers

Nicky Lopez Under 1.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -165. For the over to cash, Lopez needs two things to happen in the same night: two hits, or a hit plus a run or RBI. His profile makes that a tall ask. He is a slap hitter with one home run and a .309 slugging mark in 230 at bats. His expected stats sit even lower, a .294 expected slug, so there is no hidden damage waiting to show up. When he gets a hit, it is a single, and a single by itself stops at one.

The lineup around him works against the counting stats. He hits sixth tonight behind Ezequiel Duran, who is 6 for 48 over the last 15 days. That leaves fewer runners on base for Lopez to drive in. Behind him sit Jake Burger, Evan Carter and Danny Jansen, and all three have been cold, so if he reaches, the bats behind him are unlikely to bring him home. His history against Joe Ryan fits the same pattern: 3 for 14 over his career, all singles, no walks. Late in the game he runs into a Minnesota bullpen that was off Thursday, has nobody working a third straight day, and gave up one earned run across three games in San Francisco.

The case against this is the lineup slot. Lopez has spent most of his season hitting ninth, and moving up to sixth could get him an extra plate appearance. He has also been sharp in September, 9 for 26, and Ryan has been hit hard since coming off the injured list. Lefties have hit him better than righties this year. If Ryan leaves pitches over the plate early, Lopez could string together two singles. Even so, a player with his power, surrounded by this lineup, has to do a lot to beat 1.5, and I'll lay the price on the under.

  • GARY'S PICK
    EMMANUEL RODRIGUEZH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
    MLBMinnesota Twins· -137

    Emmanuel Rodriguez
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -137 · LOST · ACTUAL 0

    Minnesota Twins

Emmanuel Rodriguez Over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -137. One hit, one run or one RBI cashes this. The reason I like it is how hard Rodriguez has been hitting the ball. The rookie's contact has been better than his .195 average shows. His expected average is .251 and his expected slugging is .531, well above his actual numbers. The balls he puts in play have deserved more than they've gotten. When he connects, he does damage. He already has two home runs, two doubles and a triple, and any of those gives him both a hit and a chance at a run or RBI in one swing.

The game script also helps. deGrom has been pitching through groin tightness and hasn't gone past 94 pitches in a while. He walked four in his last start and lasted only four and a third innings. Hitting eighth, Rodriguez's second or third trip to the plate could easily come against a Texas bullpen whose top bridge arms all worked Wednesday and Thursday. He took pitchers deep late in games during the road trip, homering in the eighth in San Francisco. He's also been drawing walks, and every time he's on base, the top of the order has a chance to drive him in for a run.

The case against this is strong. deGrom has held lefties to a .624 OPS this season. Rodriguez has 14 strikeouts in 41 at bats and is 3 for 22 over the last week. His whole major league sample is twelve games, so none of these numbers are settled. Hitting eighth could cost him a plate appearance, and the wind blowing in from right field works against a lefty's fly balls. This is a thin edge. Still, a hitter making contact this hard, with a real chance to see a worn down bullpen, is worth backing at -137.
