The read

The last series of the season comes to Nationals Park: two eliminated NL East clubs fighting over fourth place, with a dead-even price on the board. I'm siding with the team that actually has a starting pitcher. Andrew Alvarez is fully stretched out, throwing 92, 97 and 97 pitches in three of his last four starts. He brings a 1.93 ERA over his last five and 13 straight scoreless innings. The Mets' key bats are on their weak side against a lefty. Lindor has a .631 OPS against LHP from the leadoff spot, Soto drops from .994 to .785, and Benge sits at .734. Alvarez has held right-handed hitters to a .620 OPS, and New York is sending six right-handed bats at him. Add a 0.42 HR/9 rate and a 14 mph wind blowing in from center, and the quickest path to runs against Alvarez gets narrower.

New York, meanwhile, is patching this one together. Jefry Yan opens a day after throwing 16 pitches in Arlington. Justin Hagenman follows, recalled today with 4 MLB innings this season and a reported 50-60 pitches available. Once a right-hander takes over, James Wood's .942 OPS against righties and 1.015 mark at home come into play. The Nationals' bottom of the order is also deeper than a Mets group that ends with Christopher Morel hitting .181. And the Mets flew in off a Thursday day game while Washington rested.

The case against is real. The Mets' bullpen posts a 21.4 K-BB% in tracked games against 6.6 for Washington, and the Nationals' late innings have been an adventure all year. Alvarez's 3.17 ERA also runs well under a 4.06 xERA, so that number is fragile, but at -108 the market isn't charging a premium for it. What tips it for me is workload. Washington's pen needs to cover roughly the final third of this game, while New York is getting all 27 outs from relievers. That drags arms like Jonathan Pintaro, with a 5.79 ERA over the last 30 days, into the middle innings, where this one is most likely to swing. At a coin-flip price, I'll take the side with the structural edge on the mound.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

COOLING OFF

  • James Wood: .568 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .568

James Wood has a .568 OPS over the last 15 days in 43 at-bats, 0.322 below an .890 season mark. That .890 makes him one of the better bats around, and a 43 at-bat dip is unlikely to define him. Against the Mets, a market that leans on the recent number may undersell him.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Mets are 6-4 vs Nationals this season

    6-4

The Mets are 6-4 against Washington, and the last meeting was a 4-3 game. Ten games at that split is close to even, and the sheet shows no matchup edge. Tonight's starters are the story.

STREAK

  • WSH games have gone UNDER 5 straight

    U5

Washington's five straight unders came with 8.4 combined runs a game against totals averaging 9.3. Those were high lines, and the games still scored plenty. Tonight's total against the Mets is 8, below what these games have been producing. The streak came from inflated numbers more than quiet bats, and a lower line removes most of what carried it.

    FRANCISCO ALVAREZWALKS UNDER 0.5
    MLBNew York Mets· -175

    Francisco Alvarez
    Walks under 0.5

    -175 · CASHED · ACTUAL 0

    New York Mets

I'm taking Francisco Alvarez under 0.5 walks at -175. The price is steep, and the bat has earned it lately. He has gone eight straight games without drawing a walk and has only two across his last fifteen. When he's going well, he gets his hits by swinging: eight hits in his last seventeen at bats, with the barrel finding the ball early in counts. Tonight he opens against Andrew Alvarez, and Andrew Alvarez's best weapon is a curveball hitters chase out of the zone. A right-handed hitter in attack mode, facing a lefty who lives on getting chases, is more likely to put the ball in play or strike out than to take four balls. He also posts his weakest numbers of the season against left-handed pitching, and that side of his game has never been about patience.

The strongest case against this comes from the pitcher. Command has been Andrew Alvarez's biggest flaw all year. He walked four Angels in his seven scoreless innings, and all four were right-handed hitters. Francisco Alvarez also drew a walk in one of his four career plate appearances against him. Batting sixth instead of his usual ninth gives him an extra trip to the plate, and Washington's late relievers issue free passes too, with Tolman and Cruz both working deep counts in Detroit. Over the full season he has drawn a fair number of walks, so the current drought will end eventually. At this price I'm betting on his current approach and the matchup's chase profile holding up for one more night.

  • GARY'S PICK
    ANDRES CHAPARROH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
    MLBWashington Nationals· -151

    Andres Chaparro
    H+R+RBI under 1.5

    -151 · LOST · ACTUAL 2

    Washington Nationals

I'm taking Andres Chaparro under 1.5 hits, runs and RBIs at -151. He starts the night against lefty Jefry Yan, and left-handed pitching is where his batting average sags. His power against lefties is real, but he is a low-average hitter on that side, which leaves this total riding on the long ball. His recent form points the same way. He is 3 for 13 over the last week with no homers, struck out twice in each of his last two games, and has driven in one run over his last seven. His contact quality all season has been weaker than his surface line suggests, which tells me his production has been running a little ahead of the way he's actually hitting the ball. One single with nothing else attached cashes this under.

The case against is lineup spot and game script. Tonight he bats second, right behind James Wood and his on-base skills, so RBI chances will come, and hitting second means more trips to the plate than his usual workload this year. The Mets are running a bullpen game, so once Yan exits Chaparro gets right-handed arms, and his numbers are better against righties. I also have Washington winning this game, and any crooked number that runs through the top of the order threatens a combo line like this quickly. I still think the sum is a stretch for a hitter scuffling this much, and at -151 I'll take the under.
