The read

A Friday matinee at Fenway opens a compressed doubleheader, with the freshly clinched Cubs still chasing Wild Card seeding against a Red Sox club already locked into a road Wild Card series. This game comes down to which team is actually trying to win Game 1, and the lineup cards and pitching plans answer that.

Boston is opening with Alec Gamboa, who hasn't thrown more than 29 pitches in an outing since Aug. 29. The reported bulk candidate behind him, Jake Bennett, has allowed 12 earned runs and 5 homers over his last 16 innings. Story and Rafaela sit, and Tracy has said Chapman won't pitch on consecutive days before the playoffs. The Cubs are running out their core bats, with Bregman back in the three-hole.

The handedness setup favors Chicago too. Counsell stacked seven right-handed bats against a lefty-heavy Boston plan, and the top of his order hits left-handers well: Suzuki has an .982 OPS against them, Taylor .907 and Crow-Armstrong .886. Boston has scored 1.0 run per game over its last five, and today it plays Kiner-Falefa (.308 SLG) at shortstop. On the mound, the Cubs have a true starter. Holmes gets 1.85 groundouts per flyout in front of a defense Sports Info Solutions credits with +110 Defensive Runs Saved.

The case against is real: - Holmes has walked 12 in 15.1 innings over his last three starts. - The Cubs bullpen has a 4.50 ERA and has converted just 4 of 12 save chances since Aug. 21. - Zeferjahn and Palencia both pitched yesterday. After light outings they have pitched the next day only 1 of 8 and 2 of 15 times. - If the game is tight late, Boston has Whitlock (1.72 ERA) and Chapman (1.92) rested. - The Cubs' top hitters are running above their expected stats, so the market is paying a little for fragile production.

I take the Cubs anyway. Boston's late-inning edge only matters if Tracy spends his best arms on a game his team has no standings reason to win, and today's lineup card points to rest and tune-up usage. At -126, about 53.7% without the vig, the price is modest. I'm on the moneyline rather than the run line because five of Boston's last 10 games were decided by one run.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

STARTER FORM

  • Clay Holmes: 9.39 ERA over his last 3 starts

    9.39

Clay Holmes has allowed 16 earned runs in 15.1 innings over his last 3 starts on only 14 hits, so walks or extra-base damage are doing the harm more than steady contact. His 3.25 season ERA says he has been good all year, and three starts is a short sample. Against the Cubs, watch his control early: if the free passes are gone, the season version is the better guide.

PLATOON EDGE

  • Seiya Suzuki (bats R) draws Alec Gamboa (LHP), batting 2nd

    .982

Suzuki has been a much more dangerous hitter against lefties, with a .982 OPS against them compared to .782 against right-handers. The lefty number comes from 133 at-bats, a real sample but about a third the size of his 402 against righties, so it can drift some without meaning the edge is gone. Batting 2nd, he gets extra trips to the plate against Gamboa before the bullpen shows up. For a bettor, his overall season line likely undersells him in this particular spot.

  • Matt Shaw (bats R) draws Alec Gamboa (LHP), batting 6th

    .834

Shaw has an .834 OPS against lefties and .639 against right-handers, but both come from small samples, 77 and 87 at-bats. A gap built on that little can shrink fast. From the 6th spot he gets fewer trips than the top of the order. Gamboa is a friendlier draw than his overall line suggests, with the sample size as the reason to keep expectations modest.

STREAK

  • BOS games have gone UNDER 4 straight

    U4

Boston's last four games have averaged 3.3 total runs against totals around 6.8. Four games is a tiny sample, and scoring that low rarely lasts. Tonight's total against Chicago is 6.5, only slightly lower, so the market has barely adjusted. The question is whether the quiet bats are real or a four-game blip the number is right to mostly ignore.

REGRESSION

  • Tyrone Taylor: .274 AVG vs .243 xBA

    .243

Taylor's results are running ahead of the contact he is making: a .353 wOBA against a .308 expected mark says some of his hits have landed softer than the box score suggests. Over 234 plate appearances that is a real stretch of play, though luck on balls in play can carry a hitter this long. The expected numbers point to his production drifting down toward .243 more than holding at .274. In this CHC at BOS spot, price him closer to his contact than his average, especially on hit props.

    MLBChicago Cubs· +100

    Clay Holmes
    Pitcher Earned Runs over 1.5

    +100 · 1:05 PM ET

    Chicago Cubs

I'm taking Holmes over 1.5 earned runs at even money, so two earned runs cashes it. The case starts with his command. He has walked 12 in 15.1 innings over his last three starts, including five free passes in Cincinnati, and the reporting on his September keeps landing on the same thing: the strike rate is slipping and he can't finish at-bats. Nearly all the runs scored off him in his recent starts came without a home run. Walks, singles and ground balls with men on base have done the damage, and the hits he allows don't have to leave the park to cost him.

The lineup and the park both push toward traffic. With Boston's three switch hitters batting left against him, Holmes sees six left-handed bats, and lefties have hit him harder than righties all season. Fenway rewards balls off the wall, and a 21 mph wind is blowing across the yard. Counsell also has a reason to leave him in through a rough inning. The Cubs play two today, and the manager has already said the club can't have a starter lined up for Saturday, so the bullpen has to be protected. A starter who gets more rope to work through a crooked inning gives this over a bigger window.

The case against is Boston's offense. The Red Sox have scored a run per game over their last five, and today's card has Kiner-Falefa and Monasterio at the bottom, both slumping badly. Holmes keeps the ball on the ground, allows very few barrels and has a strong infield behind him. Doug Eddings has called fewer walks than league average behind the plate this year, which works against the command angle. I still think a pitcher with a walk problem, working deep on purpose, gets to two at a coin-flip price.

  • GARY'S PICK
    NICK SOGARDH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
    MLBBoston Red Sox· -144

    Nick Sogard
    H+R+RBI over 0.5

    -144 · 1:05 PM ET

    Boston Red Sox

I'm on Sogard over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -144. One hit, one run or one RBI clears it. He's the steadiest contact bat in a cold Boston lineup, with two multi-hit games in the Cleveland series and a hit yesterday against a Guardians staff that shut his club down. His expected stats sit right on top of his actual line, so the contact he's making is real.

The matchup fits him. Sogard is a switch hitter who bats left against Holmes, and Holmes has been more hittable against left-handed batters than right-handed ones all season. Holmes is also walking hitters in bunches lately, which puts runners on ahead of the sixth spot and opens an RBI path on top of the hit path. Most of the Cubs arms behind Holmes are right-handed too, so Sogard stays on his preferred side through the late innings. Fenway gives a line-drive hitter extra room on balls off the wall.

The risk is real. Batting sixth in a lineup scoring about a run a game, runs and RBIs are hard to count on, so this is mostly a bet on him getting a hit. A walk earns him nothing here. His career look at Holmes is 0 for 2, too small to mean much, and Holmes keeps the ball on the ground in front of a good infield, which turns a lot of soft contact into outs. At -144 the price asks for a lot. I'll pay it for a hitter who keeps putting the ball in play against a starter who keeps putting men on base.
