The read
It's the final weekend in West Sacramento, and the Astros come into Sutter Health Park tied with Texas atop the AL West, holding the tiebreaker, with Hunter Brown facing Jacob Lopez. Two things carry this pick. First, Brown is pitching at a different level right now: 44 strikeouts and only 8 walks in 27.2 innings over the last five starts, mostly against contending lineups. Second, Lopez is struggling in exactly the way this matchup punishes. Over the last three starts Lopez has allowed 19 earned runs in 12.1 innings and struck out just 5 of 63 batters, and the damage came on contact, not walks. Right-handed hitters have an .870 OPS against Lopez and account for 19 of the 22 home runs allowed. Houston starts eight right-side bats tonight.
The conditions add to it. Lopez is an extreme fly-ball pitcher (0.48 GO/AO) working in a park with a 1.07 factor, 82 degrees at first pitch and an 11 mph wind blowing out to center. Yordan Alvarez still has an .832 OPS against lefties, so the one left-handed bat near the top is no relief. Brown, by contrast, gets ground balls (1.66 GO/AO) and has no platoon weakness: left-handed hitters have a .649 OPS and right-handed hitters .634.
The best argument against Houston is the middle relief. Brown has exited at exactly 5.0 innings three straight times. Bryan Abreu has worked two straight days and is 0 of 11 on a third straight day this season, and Bryan King has a 9.45 ERA over the last 30 days. The A's have Luis Medina (0.69 ERA over 30 days) and Hogan Harris rested. Lopez's 3.67 xERA also suggests the market is overpaying for a fragile 5.68 ERA, and the last time these two starters met, Lopez struck out nine. That is why this price isn't a steal. But that gem came before Lopez's strikeouts disappeared. Houston still has Tatsuya Imai on four full days off and Josh Hader, who has a 1.01 ERA, on a full day of rest. If Lopez exits early again, the A's fall back on a long relief group that includes a 6.10 ERA and a 16.55 ERA. I'll pay -180 for the starter in better form against a pitcher whose current trouble lines up with tonight's lineup and weather.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
STARTER FORM
Jacob Lopez: 13.86 ERA over his last 3 starts
13.86Jacob Lopez has given up 19 earned runs on 23 hits in 12.1 innings across his last 3 starts, so he is getting hit hard and leaving early. His 5.68 season ERA was already poor, which makes this a bad year getting worse. Three starts is a small sample and the number should come back toward 5.68, which is still a lot of runs. Against Houston, the early innings and the Oakland bullpen are where this game gets decided.
HEAT CHECK
Lawrence Butler: 1.037 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.037Lawrence Butler has a 1.037 OPS in 46 at-bats over the last 15 days, against a .720 season mark. That season line is an average bat, so this looks like a hot stretch that should cool. He has 17 home runs, and against Houston the recent form is a reason to check his props without rewriting his profile.
Yainer Diaz: 1.083 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.083Diaz is up 0.32 on his .763 season OPS over the last 15 days, in 45 AB: a solid hitter running hot for a couple of weeks. His 14 home runs point to more modest power than the recent line shows. Expect some pullback toward the season number. Against a 1.5 total-bases line in Oakland, the question is how much of the streak carries into tonight.
COOLING OFF
Christian Walker: .334 OPS in Last 15 Days
.334Christian Walker has a .334 OPS over the last 15 days in 44 at-bats, 0.369 below his .703 season mark. That season line was already modest, so the rebound target is lower than for a star bat. Some recovery toward .703 is likely, and against Houston he is a middling hitter in a cold run.

2- GARY'S PICKTOMMY WHITEH+R+RBI UNDER 1.5
Tommy White's hits, runs and RBIs line sits at 1.5, and I'm taking the under at -159. He bats eighth tonight, which usually means three or four trips to the plate, and he needs to fill two of those three columns to beat me. His bat offers little extra production to help him get there: 3 home runs and 5 walks in 180 at-bats, a .592 OPS against right-handers, and a September line of .226 with a .573 OPS. The last week is thinner still. He is 2 for 10, and he struck out in each of his last two appearances off the bench.
Hunter Brown is the arm in front of him. Brown throws a 96 mph fastball and sinker, gets ground balls, and has held right-handed hitters to a .634 OPS this season. The eighth spot also limits White's run and RBI chances. Carlos Cortes hits ahead of him at 5 for 27 over the last 15 days, and Jonah Heim follows him hitting .155 in September, so there are few runners to drive in and few hitters to drive him home.
The case against: White is 2 for 3 in his career against Brown, a sample too small to carry weight in either direction, and his expected stats say he has hit the ball a little better than his .250 average shows. Sutter Health Park plays small, the wind is blowing out to center at 11 mph, and the A's have scored 21 runs over their last three games. A single followed by a run scored is enough to lose this, which is why the price is -159 and why I stay on it anyway.
- GARY'S PICKHUNTER BROWNPITCHER EARNED RUNS UNDER 2.5
Hunter Brown's earned runs line is 2.5, and I'm on the under at -160. He has averaged 1.9 earned runs per start this season and 1.7 over his last three, and those three starts came with 27 strikeouts in 15 innings. The strikeouts are what protect this ticket: fewer balls in play means fewer ways for a rally to build. When hitters do connect, Brown keeps it on the ground with a 1.66 groundout to flyout ratio and rarely gives up a barrel, which matters on a warm night with the wind blowing out. He has also left after exactly five innings in each of his last three starts, so his line only has to survive the A's lineup about twice through.
The matchup history supports it. He faced this lineup on August 22 and gave up one earned run in 5.2 innings. His platoon splits are even, a .649 OPS to left-handers and .634 to right-handers, so the four lefties and four righties in the A's order give Kotsay no angle to press.
The strongest argument against is that Brown's runs arrive in clusters. At Philadelphia on September 9 he gave up four in a single inning on a string of singles, and his 51 walks in 102 innings put runners on base for exactly that kind of inning. Zack Gelof has 4 home runs in the last week, Lawrence Butler is 6 for 18 with a homer in his career against Brown, and the park favors hitters. If Brown exits with men on, Houston's middle relief has been leaky lately, and any inherited runner who scores lands on his line. I'll take that risk at -160 for a pitcher who has kept his earned runs this low all year.
