The read

The Rangers and Mets close out their series with a day game under the roof in Arlington. Texas is tied atop the AL West, trying to avoid a sweep, and hands the ball to Kumar Rocker. The eliminated Mets counter with rookie lefty Zac Thornton. I'm taking New York at +112, and the reason is how the second half of this game sets up. Rocker went 4.1, 4.0 and 3.0 innings in his last three starts. In two of them he cruised through four innings, then walked the first two hitters of the fifth and got pulled. Thornton has gone 6.0 and 7.0 innings in his last two starts and has reached five innings in eight straight. That likely leaves Texas's bullpen with the bulk of the afternoon. Over the last two weeks that group has a 5.24 relief ERA, against 2.40 for the Mets. In the first two games of this series the Rangers' bullpen gave up 9 earned runs in 8.2 innings.

The workload makes it worse. Latz, Silseth and Alexander all pitched Wednesday. Garcia worked Sep 19, 20 and 22 and was unavailable Wednesday. Eovaldi hasn't pitched on just one day of rest since coming back. The arms Texas has fully rested are Junis, Gray and Collyer. On the Mets side, Nunez (0.84 ERA over the last 30 days), Lavender (no hits and 5 strikeouts against 9 left-handed hitters over the last two weeks) and Senga all had yesterday off. The matchup against Rocker also suits this lineup. Rocker has allowed an .825 OPS and 14 homers to lefties in 318 at-bats, and five Mets hit left against him, including Soto, who has a .994 OPS against right-handers.

The best argument against me is real. Rocker's slider gets a 45.9% whiff rate and can own four innings. Thornton's 3.40 ERA looks shaky next to his 4.62 xERA, and he has allowed a homer in 6 of his last 7 starts. Today he faces seven right-handed bats, led by Foscue (.995 OPS vs lefties) and Jung (.929). Texas is also at home in a must-win spot. But the price isn't built on Thornton's ERA. The market has Texas favored anyway, on home field and urgency. On expected numbers the starters are nearly identical (4.62 vs 4.59 xERA). So the game comes down to who pitches innings five through nine, and New York has the better arms there. At plus money, that's my side.

COOLING OFF

  • Ezequiel Duran: .350 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .350

Duran has a .350 OPS over 48 AB in the last 15 days against .752 for the season, a 0.402 drop. That is a real slide, but a few hits in 48 AB would close much of it, and the season mark is the better guide. In Mets at Texas, check whether his prop prices lean on the slump more than his full-season numbers.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

  • Mets are 2-0 vs Rangers this season

    2-0

The Mets have played Texas twice and won both, the last one 7-2. Two games is too small to mean much, and the sheet doesn't say who pitched. Tonight is in Texas, so judge this game on its own matchup.

    Texas Rangers

Kumar Rocker over 3.5 hits allowed at -119. Rocker has given up roughly a hit per inning this season: a 1.42 WHIP with 59 walks in 143 innings, and 4.9 hits per start. His outs line today is 12.5, which points to an outing of a little over four innings. At his rate, that comes out to about four hits, and four cashes this ticket. He has gone over this number in 6 of his last 8 starts.

The lineup he faces supports the contact. Rocker has allowed a .277 average to left-handed hitters over 318 at-bats this season, compared with .231 to righties. Soto (.282 with a .994 OPS against right-handers), Benge (.276 vs RHP), Ewing (.260 vs RHP) and Baty (.252 vs RHP) all bat left today, and Lindor switch-hits. Several of them are also hot. Benge is 9 for 24 over the last week, Baty is 6 for 11, and Ewing is hitting .353 in September.

The best argument against is the short leash. In his last two starts he went 4.0 and 4.1 innings and allowed 3 and 2 hits, because walks ended those outings before hits could add up. His slider draws a 52.4% chase rate, so strikeouts cut down on balls in play. The bottom of the Mets order is weak. Morabito is hitting .184 in only 38 at-bats, and Semien is at .150 over the last week. At -119 I need roughly 54 percent. A pitcher who allows a hit an inning, facing five left-side bats over four-plus innings, clears that bar.
