The read
It's the rubber game of a possible October preview at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia is one step from clinching and Milwaukee is chasing its 100th win on a cool night with the wind blowing in from center. This one comes down to who pitches the middle innings, and I like where that lands for the Phillies. Andrew Painter has gone at least five innings in each of his last eight starts with a 4.14 ERA in that stretch. His bad starts in that run have all been home-run starts, and 64 degrees with 11 mph blowing in is the right weather for him. Behind him, Jhoan Duran (1.88 ERA), Alex McFarlane (2.12) and Jose Alvarado (0.84 over the last 30 days) all had a full day off. The Brewers hand the ball to Shane Drohan, who gave up 11 earned runs in his last 7.2 innings as a starter. Backing him is a right-hander just activated off the injured list whose longest outing this season is three innings.
That puts real weight on a Milwaukee pen that used its best arms last night. DL Hall threw 36 pitches, and after that kind of workload he has pitched the next day 0 of 10 times. Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe have come back the day after light outings only 10 of 37 and 8 of 31 times. Add a rest-day lineup, with Jackson Chourio, Christian Yelich and Andrew Vaughn on the bench and spots five through nine slugging .319 to .419. This is a clinched club managing arms against a team whose magic number is 2.
The best case against me is Drohan himself. He has allowed 0 homers in 148 at-bats to lefties, Bryce Harper drops to a .660 OPS against southpaws, and the Phillies' bridge relief has been shaky. But Kyle Schwarber carries an .895 OPS against lefties and a .961 OPS at home. Once Milwaukee turns to the right-hander, Harper gets his 1.005 split back. Drohan and his bulk partner can realistically cover only part of this game. The rest falls to Milwaukee's second tier, while Philadelphia saves its best for the late innings. At -134, I'll lay it with the home side.
The research
The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.
HEAT CHECK
Brice Turang: 1.135 OPS in Last 15 Days
1.135Turang has a 1.135 OPS over 39 AB in the last 15 days, 0.334 above his .801 season mark. The jump is among the smaller ones here, and with 19 home runs his baseline is good, so the pullback should be modest. Thirty-nine AB is still a short window. His total-bases line at Philadelphia is 0.5, so one hit clears it, and his season .801 supports that.
COOLING OFF
Kyle Schwarber: .571 OPS in Last 15 Days
.571Schwarber has a .571 OPS over 48 AB in the last 15 days, down 0.29 from his .861 season mark. It is a dip, and milder than several other slumps on this board. His season number rests on far more at-bats, so a rebound is the likelier direction. In Brewers at Phillies, weigh the season profile over the recent stretch.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Brewers are 3-2 vs Phillies this season
3-2Milwaukee is 3-2 against Philadelphia and won the last meeting 4-1. Five games is a thin sample, and the sheet doesn't say who started or where. Tonight is in Philadelphia, so start from the pitching matchup.

2- GARY'S PICKANDREW PAINTERPITCHER OUTS OVER 14.5
Andrew Painter over 14.5 outs at -156. I need five full innings, and he has given me that in each of his last eight starts. Newest first, the outs were 16, 15, 15, 21, 18, 21, 15, 16, on pitch counts between 85 and 103. Three of those eight landed exactly on 15. He usually clears this line by an out, not by an inning, and I'm pricing it that way.
The matchup helps him. Milwaukee has clinched the bye and is resting Jackson Chourio, Christian Yelich and Andrew Vaughn. That pushes Gary Sanchez (.736 OPS against righties), Luis Lara (.684), Cooper Pratt (.749) and Sal Frelick (.642) into the five through eight spots, and that's where Painter can bank quick outs. It's 64 degrees with 11 mph blowing in from center. That matters for a pitcher who has allowed 20 homers in 22 starts and whose bad nights lately have been home run nights. Philadelphia can clinch a playoff spot tonight with a win and help elsewhere, so Don Mattingly has every reason to let his starter carry the middle innings instead of leaning early on a bridge that has wobbled all month.
The case against starts with this ballpark. Painter has a 6.11 ERA in 53 innings at Citizens Bank Park and an 8.59 first inning ERA, so a crooked opener could bring an early hook, especially with Jhoan Duran, Alex McFarlane and Jose Alvarado all rested. The top of this Brewers order still hits right-handers: Brice Turang .887 OPS, Jake Bauers .885, Garrett Mitchell .813. This lineup walks 12 times per 100 trips, and Painter's own walk line is 1.5 with the over at -171, so pitch count is the threat. Reporting also says the club wants a relief look at him before October, and if that comes this weekend they could trim tonight's outing. Eight straight starts of 15 or more outs, with a workload holding in the low 90s, outweighs that at this price.
- GARY'S PICKJOEY ORTIZH+R+RBI OVER 0.5
Joey Ortiz over 0.5 hits plus runs plus RBIs at -167. One hit, one run or one RBI cashes this. Ortiz has recorded at least one in 13 of the last 15 games and is hitting .345 with a .907 OPS over 55 September at-bats. The split fits tonight. Against right-handed pitching Ortiz hits .284 with a .772 OPS over 225 at-bats, compared with .237 against lefties, and Painter is a righty. The spot in the order adds a second path. Ortiz bats ninth with Garrett Mitchell (.355 OBP) and Brice Turang (.365 OBP, .887 OPS against righties) right behind, so any time Ortiz reaches, even on a walk, there's a real chance of coming around to score. Citizens Bank Park plays small, which doesn't hurt either.
The case against starts with volume. The ninth spot averages about 3.5 trips, and if Painter works efficiently through the bottom of the order, Ortiz could get only three. The last week has been cooler, .211 with a .602 OPS over 19 at-bats, including a four-strikeout night in Baltimore on 9/20 and two more strikeouts against Aaron Nola last night. The career line against Painter is 1-for-3, too small to tell me anything. The wind blowing in from center will also take away some extra-base contact. At -167 I need this to land about 62.5 percent of the time. A hitter at .284 against righties, with two good on-base bats behind, clears that for me.
