The read

A division crown is on the line in West Sacramento. The Astros open a four-game finale needing every win, and the Athletics answer with a spot starter and a spoiler's grudge. I'm laying the price with Houston because of one matchup that snowballs. Peter Lambert has a 3.70 ERA backed by a 3.67 xERA and has walked just 1 batter over the last 18.1 innings. Mason Barnett has a 10.24 ERA in 19.1 innings as a starter, with 15 walks, and has never faced more than 21 batters in a start. Barnett throws a four-seamer 49% of the time, and it has allowed a .403 xwOBA. Yordan Alvarez has a .499 xwOBA against four-seamers and a 1.113 OPS against righties. Behind Alvarez are seven right-handed bats facing a pitcher allowing a .925 OPS to right-handers and 2.45 HR/9, in a 1.07 park at 92 degrees.

Barnett's short leash is the bigger edge, because it hands the middle innings to the thin part of the Oakland pen. Luis Medina and Hogan Harris both worked the last two days. This season, Medina is 0 of 5 and Harris 1 of 17 in pitching the day after back-to-backs. Geoff Hartlieb is 0 of 6 the day after a 16-25 pitch outing. Elvis Alvarado has gone back-to-back only 3 of 21 times after a light one. That leaves a lot of outs for Scott Blewett, Drew Rom, Seth Johnson (6.10 ERA), Chris Roycroft (6.19) and Yunior Tur (16.55). Oakland has lost all five of Barnett's starts, and tonight's lineup has only three hitters with an xSLG above .400.

The best argument against Houston is the back of its own bullpen. Josh Hader threw 44 pitches last night and is 0 of 1 this season in working the day after a 26-plus pitch outing. Houston also played 10 innings before an overnight trip. A tight ninth inning is Oakland's real path. So is Lambert's walk rate to lefties, 46 walks in 300 at-bats, against a lineup with four lefties plus switch-hitter Jonah Heim. I'm taking Houston anyway. Lambert should cover far more of this game than Barnett, so Houston needs fewer relief outs, and Tatsuya Imai (2.12 ERA) and Miguel Ullola (2.45 ERA) are both rested. I trust the starter gap and Oakland's middle-relief exposure more than the late-inning risk.

The research

The dated measurements the app shows under this card — observations with their sample and source, not predictions.

HEAT CHECK

  • Yainer Diaz: 1.083 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.083

Diaz's run covers 45 AB and sits 0.327 above his .756 season OPS. With 13 home runs, he is usually an average bat with modest power, so he is more likely to settle near .756 than stay here. His total-bases line in HOU @ OAK is 1.5, which needs an extra-base hit or two singles.

  • Lawrence Butler: 1.037 OPS in Last 15 Days

    1.037

Butler's run covers 46 AB and sits 0.318 above his .719 season OPS. His 17 home runs give him real pop, and this stretch is that power showing up more often. The gap is smaller than most on this list, but .719 is still his level so far. His total-bases line in HOU @ OAK is 1.5, so he needs power or two hits to clear it.

COOLING OFF

  • Christian Walker: .334 OPS in Last 15 Days

    .334

Walker's cold run covers 44 AB and sits 0.37 below his .704 season OPS. That season number is already modest, so even a full bounce back only gets him to an ordinary level. Some recovery is likely, but in HOU @ OAK his baseline sets a lower ceiling than the size of the slump suggests.

STREAK

  • HOU games have gone UNDER 10 straight

    U10

Over those 10 games, Houston and its opponents combined for 7.8 runs a night, and the lines averaged 9. Tonight's total at Oakland is 10.5, higher than any line during the streak, so the market has moved well past what these games have produced. To go over, this game needs about three more runs than Houston's recent average. So ask whether 10.5 reflects this matchup or overcorrects for a long run of unders.

TEAM RECORD

  • Athletics 0-5 in Mason Barnett's last 5 starts

    0-5

Oakland has lost every one of Barnett's last 5 starts. A team record on a pitcher's days also counts the lineup and the bullpen, so it says less about Barnett than the 0-5 suggests. Five games is a small sample, and runs like this usually end. With Houston in town, the thing to check is whether the A's price already assumes the losing continues.

    Peter Lambert
    Pitcher Outs over 15.5

    -120 · LOST · ACTUAL 8

    Houston Astros

Lambert over 15.5 outs at -120. I need him to get one batter into the sixth, and his last three starts produced 16, 18 and 21 outs. He averages 16.8 outs per start across 27 starts. The reason he's working deeper is command. He has walked one batter over his last 18.1 innings, after walking five in 4.2 innings against the White Sox on Aug. 31. Low pitch counts per inning are what carry a starter past the fifth, and he got through 21 outs against Arizona on 98 pitches.

The Houston bullpen situation pushes this further in my favor. Houston played 10 innings in Seattle last night. Josh Hader threw 44 pitches. AJ Blubaugh and Logan VanWey have pitched on back-to-back days, and Josh Hendrickson threw 31 pitches in his debut. The rotation is down to four men with Cristian Javier out. Joe Espada needs Lambert to eat innings tonight, and the Athletics lineup behind Henry Bolte, Lawrence Butler and Zack Gelof has only a few bats that should worry him. In his one start against Oakland this year, on June 5, Lambert went 5.1 innings and allowed one run.

The risk is a short night in a hot, hitter-friendly park. It is 92 degrees at Sutter Health Park, and Oakland has scored 16 runs in its last two games. Lambert's August was rough. He logged 11 outs in the 9-run disaster against the Angels and 14 against Chicago. The Chronicle has also reported that Espada manages his innings carefully, and with the division on the line, the manager could pull him quickly at the first sign of trouble. Even so, a tired pen and a pitcher who is throwing strikes are good reasons to lay the short price on the sixth inning.

    LAWRENCE BUTLERWALKS UNDER 0.5
    MLBOakland Athletics· -130

    Lawrence Butler
    Walks under 0.5

    -130 · CASHED · ACTUAL 0

    Oakland Athletics

Butler under 0.5 walks at -130. The case starts with the pitcher. Lambert has walked just one batter in his last three starts, 18.1 innings against the Braves, Rays and Diamondbacks. Those lineups are far more patient than this one. His pitch mix lives around the zone, with a four-seamer, a changeup and a sinker that he uses to get early contact, and tonight's Oakland nine strike out more often than they walk. Butler's own season sits at 60 walks over 523 plate appearances, which comes out to less than half a walk per game. The plate umpire, John Tumpane, has run a slightly lower walk rate than the league this year, so the zone should not be squeezing Lambert.

Butler has also been swinging his way on base lately. He has hits in his last two games, including a triple and a double against Kikuchi on Tuesday. When he is squaring the ball up like that, he is putting it in play instead of working deep counts.

The argument against me is volume and recent patience. Butler is batting second tonight after spending most of his season sixth or fourth, which should get him an extra trip to the plate. He walked four times in a three-game set in Cleveland last week. Lambert's walk trouble this season has come mostly against left-handers, including five walks to lefties in that White Sox start. If Lambert leaves early, Butler would also face a tired Houston bullpen that walked four batters in Hader's inning last night. I'm still taking the under, but at a modest price and with modest conviction, because the pitcher's current command outweighs a short patient stretch at the plate.
